Jim, unfortunately im not going to be much help on registering your avid, the fuselage was cover on mine and is now still register as the avid c, I think my option is to re register it as a basic ultralight ,im in the process of having the subaru engine allowed and I believe without any paper work from the  manufacture I dont have any options of increasing my gross weight even though i believe it is the same HH wing the was on the Mark 1V

    Ed,
My question about those articles, which I've read several times over the years is this: The Ch701 has VERY thick cambered wing, and I really wonder how much that has to play into the factor. I'd love to experiment with it on an Avid, try the Slats first, then remove and install VG's, then possibly have both!
Hopefully I'll have one very soon to do that with.

    Randy,
Has he ever just installed a 3' section out towards the tip to see what it would do, much like the Stinsons that are built in. I like the idea of it being able to float and then push back against the wing in cruise flight. I might have to try this one! Let us know how it goes, I'm very interested in the end results.

I see that Ron.  And you still don't have the trailing edges on yet.  You may need a pad between them if you trailer.
I laughed at my Mag manual - the 2 photos showing trailing edges show the earlier tips slanted toward the front, but the drawings show the Finch tips.

    Randy,
I don't think that flutter with flaps is a big issue if the controls are holding them tightly when retracted - Flaps don't even have to be balanced - On the other hand, ailerons and even more, flaperons, float and move in the wind, and have more of an issue with flutter - I know that on my Ercoupe the TCDS listed how much movement (play) could be in the aileron control mechanism so to prevent flutter - It didn't have flaps.
80 degrees !!!!! and the FAA said that to license the L-19 Cessna Birddog you had to reduce the flap angle to not more than 40 or 45 degrees from the original 60......so I was told.  Experimental is Wonderful.....

Been there. Built a Legal Eagle XL and showed him our idea on the push pull tubes that we put in our wings, and guess what his new Double eagle came out with! HMM, great idea.

…and make sure the bearings in the turtle deck are fitted properly.  Improper fitment there is more likely to induce flutter.

I think Kazoom also has a flap dump button on the stick so the pilot can get to within a foot or two of the ground then hit the dump button and the flaps come off without him having to reach for the flap handle.  Some type of electric release on them.  Isn't Kazoom the plane that Ed Doyle was flying at Valdez?  I know it has made an appearance there a few times... I also think it was the one that was featured in several news articles where Ed had fuel issues and stuffed it into a hell hole on a beach surrounded by HUGE piles of drift wood.. and only folded a gear leg that had broken a few days prior and had a hasty field repair done to it so they could fly it in the competition.

Edit, yep, did a little digging, here is where he broke the gear the first time, and you can see the flap dump... that lead to the plop down, that folded the gear leg.... sumbitch ifn he didn't get it in short though!  they had a 9-12 MPH head wind blowing that day.

And the news article showing the Valdez win... then the crash... The gear folded twice in a week, but look at the mine field he set if down in on that beach!!!

    Jim -

I realize you may not have found or gotten through all the thread topics in the Fat Avid forum yet. Link to Fat Avid forum here >> http://www.avidfoxflyers.com/index.php?/forum/27-fat-avids-avid-plus-and-airdale/

You might take a read through this thread, it explains why the Airdale Flyer mods for 1400 lb. MTOW are not directly applicable to the Avid+. Link here >> http://www.avidfoxflyers.com/index.php?/topic/264-m-t-o-w-modifications/

    -------

@ MODS - how about moving all the 'after intro' posts here to a new 'banjoplayer's FatAvid' thread in the Fat Avid forum. TIA

    Sioux201,
below,to the right, where I am writing this, I see a black rectangle with "Post" in it - to the right of that is says "more reply options"
If you will write your post, then click on "more reply options", it will take your post to an advanced portion, where you can attach photos, documents, or whatever.   Or, if it is a private matter, you can click on, for example, the name, like C5E and it will take you to the message section, where you can click on "send them a message", and that also lets you attach photos, ect.
         Hope this helps.

    Jon,
The UK did not like the strength of the rib ends that support the flaperons, therefore they made Kitfox add some .025 aluminum angles to each side of them to pass certain tests.   There should be a post about this somewhere in this site which shows the installation process.   Others have cracked or broken rib ends, and there are posts about how to repair them.  Maybe Leni "Akflyer" or Joey "C5E", Doug "DHolly" or someone can direct you to the proper posts for the info you need.  I do well to turn on the puter and type.

The counterweights supplied are fine.  They are not for completely balancing the flaperons, they are for flutter control.  Many guys originally flew without them (like the guys that did not put the wood fairings on the struts), but after an engineering evaluation by a boeing guy, it was determined that there could be flutter in certain instances.. hence the counterweights being required.  Dont loose any sleep about trying to get them perfectly balanced, just instal per manual and move on to the next step.

    Balancing Flaperons
Hi folks, I'm building an Avid Model C kit that I picked up a few years ago and I've mounted a flaperon counterweight to the flaperon  just like it says in the manual, but instead of taking off some of the lead weight, I need even longer or heavier weights to balance the flaperons.  This is using the sawhorse method where the point of contact between the flaperon and level sawhorse surface  is way out by the leading edge of the flaperon.  When I set that up my flaperons don't balance with the weight hanging too low, they sit flat on the sawhorse and I'd have to add more weight to the counterweight to get the 1/4" gap on the trailing edge that is recommended.        If I hang the flaperon on the wing the flaperon hinges are too stiff to allow for balancing.   Wouldn't I need to balance the flaperon by balancing it on 2 knife edges that are on sawhorses but are directly in line with and under the flaperon spar?  If I do it that way I'm truly balancing the weight of the flaperon on it's pivot, and my guess is I'd have to remove about 1/2" of the lead weight.  Please help me out.   Thanks,   Mike

Wow. It isn't looking good for Brett. I need a cowl. Sure hope the Airdale cowl Ron Smith can make will work with the Fat Avid. He is checking with Jerry Mattison to see what light he can shed. There are two fronts for the mold and at the very lease I need to know which is intended for the 912 engine.

Never leave home without a tape measure, paper and pen - I measured every plane that I thought might help me design mine.
I have rough dimensions for the Kitfox 4, if that would help you.  I made all of my tailfeathers larger than the earlier Foxes, and added the balance tips to each of them - not hard to weld on extensions to the old ones either.
