    Wing Strut Wood
I see theres a conversation on the Yahoo site about the wood wing strut fairing being a required structural component and, Avid sent out an AD on it in the early days.

I'm pretty sure I've seen both Avid and Kitfox without these installed.  Thoughts??

Let me know what the shipping and other costs are, and I will be happy to take them off of your hands, Hydraulic is the way I want to go, but I am so close to getting airborne that I will put it together with whatever parts I can get.
I was a professional welder but worked with heavier gage steel, as a hobby I have been welding lighter stuff, gas and Tig, If I had good pictures and a rough idea of measurents I could build them from what I have on hand.
I heard through the grapevine, that there was a brick building up in the rural part of Alaska that they shipped in the bricks using flat rate boxes, they were cheaper than anything else.

If your interested, I am going to be taking my old Matco masters off and putting on the newer ones that use the remote reservoir sometime this summer.  I already have the new masters, I just have to modify the tabs on my rudder bar to be able to install them.  The old Masters will be your for the taking if you want them.

I'm using my original rudder bars so hopefully Joey can come to the rescue there but I did however locate the original pedals for the cable breaks I've been pretty busy lately but will try and get some pics for you in the next couple days and you can decide for yourself if you want to just fab some up, it would be real easy, or you can have these ones. all that said I've had the old style brakes on a skyraider and hated them and I always flew from dirt or grass strips. I think it would be in your best interest to go for the hydraulic brakes yes its not cheap but I think its worth it. just my .02 whatever you decide It would be real easy to fab up your own parts or just use these ones and you could easily use the same torque tubes later if you decide to go hydraulic, it is wise to add some small gussets to where the uprights come off of the main torque tube and also the tabs where the rudder cables attach. I'm assuming you can weld based off your name but if not just some hysol and rivets should work fine for the gussets. good luck

That sounds really fun! And a great way to learn how you will react if ever in a situation of reduced oxygen.

I work for a company that manufactues neurodiagnostic medical equipment and we were developing a pulse oximenter. Being relatively athletic at the time, I got to participate in oxygen desaturation experiments to compare our oximeter to a standard as part of our FDA approval testing.

if I remember correctly (it was several years ago) I put on a mask and was fed less and less oxygen, but still had the sensation of getting full breaths of air so I never felt the need to struggle for air. It was a very interesting sensation as my blood desaturated but since I was in pretty good shape it didn't seem to have much of an effect at least for as long as I did it or for as far as the needed the oximeter calibrated.

Then i did an experiment of my own to track our oximeter further into desaturation. We had "safety" there in the form of the company president who is an MD. When I was already desaturated as far as they were testing the oximeter, I took a deep breath of the weak mixture and held my breath for as long as I could. At first everything was OK but as time went on I wanted to breathe worse and worse and the oxygen saturation kept tanking. The first two minutes were OK, but after that things really started happening. My vision narrowed and I really had to fight not to squirm and struggle. I made it to three minutes before it felt like I was about to pass out and die, and everyone in the room was telling me to breathe and were getting very concerned, although I wasn't worried. That was a sure sign I had lost good judgement which as I understand it is one of the signs of oxygen deprevation. They were very concerned and I wasn't! Breathing regular air never felt so good! I hope I didn't kill too many brain cells, but I know some divers can hold their breath for up to seven minutes so I probably didn't do too much damage.

Anyway it was a fun experimet and I was happy to get to participate. And I got to learn too a bit about how I react in a strange environment. I almost got the opportunity to go into a chamber like you did, but they cut that program at Fairchild AFB which is where they used to periodically offer the opportunity to civilians.

Do you need the rudder bars or the pedals that connect to the bars? I found my bars yesterday in the hangar but danged if I know what I did with the pedals themselves.

    Mark,

FYI... I bot a damaged Aerotrek (U.S. SLSA version of Eurofox) and ended up replacing the wings with new factory built wings to comply with the major repair requirements in the manufacturers repair manual. The old wings are easily rebuildable IMHO (I would have done just that if it werent for the darn SLSA rules). IIRC, the wings share the same 27-1/2" center to center f/r spar pin bushing measure with the Avid and KF cousins. Certainly quicker than building a new set of wings, and offer some great features not available with the KF 4-7 wing (ie. aluminum ribs and 'floating' wing tanks, steel drag tubes. Since Aerotrek uses similar flaperon push/pull tubes to the flaperon horns as Avid and KF, I dont see a problem using your Teleflex cables but, if you use your existing flaperons (I'm using the old flaperons), some modification to the wing attach system will be necessary. Again, IMHO, not terribly complicated and a very inexpensive mod aside from the time, but it will result in a much stronger all-metal design than the wood hinges on your Avid wing.

Let me know if you care to discuss.

Now I understand what you're saying. I didn't think about removing and replacing the inner tube to redrill. I think the easier solution is a small bushing though. Not sure how easy it would be to pull the tube out of the spar. Good thought though. I'll have to look at it closer and see if I really need to do anything, but this thread gives me some ideas.

My wife hates the cold and snow - We have had a very long winter here and lots more snow than usual - I kept telling my wife that there was not enough snow in Alaska for the dogs to run the Iditarod - they had to run on gravel because it was so warm.
Now, you post all those photos of snow and ice and mountains!
Beautiful memories for me - but my move back just got cancelled!

    Leni,
I just bought a used set of Horton STOL Droop tips for a 182 - Hoping they will work for my extended leading edge on Foxy - If I don't use them, then the NEXT TIME you need a set.......They wont be as cheap as your bargain - but a whole lot less than $1500 to $2000 for a new set!   Avids are a LOT cheaper!
