It's official, my wife and I will be going to OSH this year. She was approved for leave and we just purchased tickets for Wednesday through Saturday and got our camping at Scholler as well. Unfortunately we obviously have to drive up this year so we decided to go to Upper Michigan for a few days to visit a national park before we drive back south to Airventure.

Hopefully we'll be onsite early on Wednesday. Let the planning begin for the forums and what all we want to see.

One question for those that have gone, how viable is it to eat most of the time at the event, or would it be better to catch shuttles into town? We will have a very small camp trailer (think towed behind a motorcycle) and an even smaller back pack type camp stove so we can do some limited cooking. Just trying to plan ahead a little.

    Okay.

Time is getting short.  We need to get our shit together if we want to have an AFF meet and greet.

Wednesday is usually the Kitfox/Rans party up on the north end.  They have a little dinner mixer.  I assume it is on again for this year.  I'll find out for sure.

I haven't heard if its on or not, but Thursday is when Brett has his luncheon at the seaplane base.  Does someone want to find this out from him?

What does every one want to do?  As I said, I would volunteer to host a simple weenie roast at my campsite.  Maybe a couple of adult beverages...

Thanx for the Kitfox info - Seems like every time I think I am finished with my wings, then I find that there is another important mod to do - Guess it is better to do it the best I can the first time, rather than fix things later on.

Had a feeling. It did look very complete and what work had been done looked pretty nice too, good for you. Sad though, that another builder went West without realizing his dream. Make him proud!

Very interesting photos of the Avid with a Franklin.  The starter ring gear appears to be adapted from a Lycoming, and probably a lightweight starter mounted on the top of the crankcase.  Notice how long the lever arm is from the crankshaft to the carburetor.  That's another reason why I would like to find a "C" model sump and put the carb back of it and up higher like in a 150 or 165 Horse Franklin.  The mount is also somewhat of a challenge what with the actual framework of the fuselage being back from the rudder pedal mounts.  Hmmm...

That is the kitfox that sold at the estate auction. I ended up buying it from the guy that got it at the auction. He made a little but at least I knew what he gave for it. Very nice and complete kit, I upgraded a few things (like the gear). Just fired the rotax this weekend. Runs great!!

You may plant some seeds of interest with the Franklin - most young flyers have never seen one like that - prices may go up again!  Wonder how much the new Polish ones are going for?
Can't go wrong with Red! Looks Good.  Send us some flying reports.   What prop?
    Thx for posting photos.

    Thanks Robert,
That is just what the book shows for the Avid Magnum - except that I thought it may have been made in one piece, and the ear bent 90 degrees - hard to tell from photos in builders manual.  I think I will replace my old ones and use the same rivet holes - don't like drilling more holes in spar than necessary.

  10. dholly added a post in a topic Source for Curtis Quick Drain mini gasket / O-rings

I doubt the original gasket rings would go bad overnight with E-10 Autogas, mine took a few months.

Never the less, if there is a chance that you will use auto gas, I would just E-proof the entire fuel system sooner rather than later. Cheap insurance. In addition to fuel hose and quick drains, don't forget your gascolator if applicable. Aircraft Spruce (I think that's where I got them) sells an ethanol proof replacement bowl gasket and SS screen for the E-AB homebuilder style gascolator.

BTW, I used one of the HF nitrile kit O-rings and so far so good.

  12. High Country added a post in a topic Avid Jury Strut Spar Bracket?

Ed, My avid uses two small steel angles riveted/ hysoled to the spar as well. I have seen some that looked much nicer on other Avids though. and also on some Just aircraft. looked like someone took a piece of tubing with the same size inner diameter as the outer diameter of your spar cut out a small shim say 1/4" or so and cut that up into smaller pieces so when its cut you have a nice piece of material that is perfectly shaped to go around your spar but its only 1 1/2" or so long then you just weld a tab sticking down however far you need to bolt the jury strut onto this is then attached to the spar just like the others. hope that mad since.

Doug, I'm glad you brought this up. so just to make sure I have 3 curtis quick drains in my system- 1 in each wing tank and 1 in the header tank. I'm planning to put fuel in for the first time next week. Do I need to replace the o-rings now to make sure they will hold up to alcohol or am I ok to just use them seeing as I don't plan to ever run alcohol except for the occasional time when I cant find the good stuff??? sorry to butt in but I had never considered this and now you have me thinking.

Like just about when the cut is nearly thru, and the tubes bind up the blade, and your teeth chatter!  Been there and done that!   But, there are occasions when both methods are useful.
P.S.   Neither method is as bad as my job this weekend - Patched some bad places in concrete joints in garage floor, and had to grind it smooth so wife could re-paint it.
Note:   I showed how sloppy I was at painting, so she fired me from that job a long time ago!   Ha-Ha!

Welcome. I hauled my model c/d from california to illinois, but in a covered trailer. Good luck on the build and ask questions here. The answers will let you know all the ways to not do something. )

Friday or Saturday could work good for me; just have to postpone some projects.  Give me a call when you see how your time is looking.

One important thing I have to do soon is getting my wing spars trimmed to fold better so I can trailer the plane for caribou hunting this year and it is coming up fast.  I should make a recon run there before the hunt to be sure I can still get into the strip and confirm it hasn't washed out.  So much flying to do and so little time...

It wasn't the lures though, it was no fish.  Didn't see a single one surface or any from the air.  They were not there; but that will be two weeks ago this coming Sat.

Sounds like they are doing good in the Willow; my buddy said he caught 3 there on Monday but you can't keep them.

Who looks out the turtle deck except to check the elevator and rudder during the controls check?  I put a small mirror on my jury strut to take care of that.

I've seen guys who could do surgery with a Sawzall.

If you know how to operate one you can do some fine work with it.

If you don't, it will beat the ever loving crap out of you…

Would you like that in duct tape, gorilla tape or for a small surcharge I can use video tape?

You must be using a different style Ed. The blades that go in my Sawzall would be pretty tough to break cutting on this thin walled tube. Sometimes the best tool depends on the situation though. There were a few places I would have had a hard time fitting a cutoff wheel. One thing I like about the sawzall is that I can reach back into tight spots with just the end of the blade and make a nice clean cut. I guess whatever does the job is the best

We modified some oil sumps to bigger capacity for racing - not hard to do - just need to extend the pickup tube to match.

I have had better luck with the cutoff wheels on cutting tubing - broke lots of saw blades before I learned.

I flew a 7ACA out of Lockport, IL in the early 1970's.  I gave my wife-to-be's cousins their first airplane ride in it, and several of my classmates their first airplane ride in it.  'Never did have any problems with it, but you had to have the idle speed set up above 850 rpm or it would shake the smithereens out of the carburetor.  As you see it, the oil capacity is only 2.5 qts.  I'm looking for a "C" model oil sump for it with a more reasonable 4 qt capacity.

When I towed the airplane, I reversed the ball on the hitch to pick the tail up by about 6 inches over leaving it alone.  It made quite a difference.  I'm sure the airload on the wings was less, and I was able to see traffic better out the side view mirror.  I tried to keep my speed at 60 or under, but ran as fast as 65 to get out of the way of some heavy traffic in Illinois.

That was several wraps of duct tape with a couple of layers of Gorilla tape over.  Ya do what ya gotta do...
