How in the world can you work the rudder pedals in your MKIV with BOOTS on?)

I'm known for flying barefoot or in cold weather with thick warm socks and fleece slippers just to work the pedals. In the coldest I would wear the equivalent of wrestling shoes and thick socks. my Magnum is a different story. I can wear pack boots in it!

I was running the ETX 12A

Earth X had and engineer call me direct at home last night. He seems to be a great guy that knows what he is talking about. My voltage output is only 14V so thats not an issue. None of my fuses were popped. It may have just been a bad battery and not a huge concern for others... hopefully this is the case. I'm going to send them the battery for him to analyze and will post up the findings.

Great pictures Mike, thanks for posting them.  Way to get out and use those planes!  I am glad to hear that MT is still pretty reasonable on allowing planes to land on the roads.  I was surprised how restrictive they were on landing in the CM Russell wildlife refuge area where we have been deer huntin down there the past couple of years but maybe that is Fed land?

I sure like your plane.  You probably mentioned your extended strake to the VS, it looks nice.

Sure glade you got the battery out without damage.  I remember reading in KP or SA a few years ago about a guy who lost his newly completed biplane during taxi testing when the jumper battery he was using tipped over and shorted out.  It burnt the beautiful plane to a crisp.

Wow, that is pretty scary.  Which battery is it?  It should not matter what size the battery is since you are not using it for starting.  I assume you don't have a volt meter on your plane or you would have said what charge voltage you were showing.  Just speculating that it might be over charging so you should check that no matter what battery you go to.

Where have you seen the other examples of EarthX failures?  Please keep us up on what they say and what you determine to be the cause.

I probably have about 15 to 20 hours on mine now with no issues but this does make me nervous.

Just something to consider, if you fly in cold weather, take into account your multiple layers of heavy clothing and boot packs.  Give yourself as much room as you can, around and between the rudder peddals and side to side on the stick stick.  In my MKIV, the tightest space was left stick movement.  There was very little with winter clothes on; you can move your right knee over but the left one hits the door and that's it.  It spooked me a couple of times in turbulence.  Another thing I learned that almost cost me my plane was never fly with welt sole boots.  I hooked the sole under the center tube of the frame once on landing; not a fun situation.

Great achievment Mark!  I need lessons from you on making it light.  That, or I got two for the price of one.    Mine does pretty good for the mission I use it for though.  Still a ways out from 1000 hours on this one yet.  Hope you all have a great get together at Osh!  Wish I could be there too.

    Robert,
for some reason, probably my fault, my question to you did not post.
I asked, do you have a charging system on your engine with your pull start?

    Bandit,
sorry I cant make Osh - wish I could be there and join in the fun the AFF guys should have together.  My wings are now 90%, and very tired of looking at them - going to hang the 2nd one on the wall in a few days and start making some wood parts as I figure out how to make my ailerons / flaps / controls all work and fit the fuselage.
Not a good comparison, but Sam Colt made his first prototype revolver out of wood - so it must be a practical way to go for someone who don't do CAD.
Wishing all of you a good time at Osh - don't bash me too bad, since I cant be there!   I will be looking for you on the CD/DVD.

I think that Randy Suberavid was going to buy a big EarthX bat for his plane - sure hope he don't have a meltdown in the bush.

I don't know anything about your pull start system - once it is started, is there a charging system?

Luke- thanks this is my first build with little to no experience with most of the different processes and not the greatest tool selection so if I can do it I believe anyone can best secret I can give is to just be patient and don't lower your standards just to get done a little quicker. thats also probably the hardest part. I'm sure yours will be great.

Ed- I think all electronics are like that right. they work off the magic smoke and if it gets out there is nothing left to make it work.

I'm still not too sure myself. Currently they are trying to void the warranty saying that it isn't big enough to turn the starter... I have pull start grrr. I sent pics of the engine showing no electric starter and they haven't replied yet. in the mean time now I have to decide on a different battery... any suggestions I'm running a 532 with pull start mainly just need it for my MGL engine monitor. I will keep you all posted as to what we find with the problem and what results come from it.

I guess L-batteries are like resistors - they are full of smoke - if the smoke gets out, then they are HOT-FOD!

    HighCountry,
I'm glad the meltdown ended up as an inconvenience instead of an incident.  EarthX claims to use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) cells to make their battery pack which are known to be the safest Lithium technology.  These cells shouldn't exhibit this behavior, so it would be helpful for others on the forum to hear how EarthX can explain the event.  The only thing I see from their website is a maximum of 15 V should be applied from the charging circuit.  Maybe if you have a Rotax regulator, it isn't a good match for the battery pack.  In short, I'm curious what went wrong.

Glad the battery situation didn't have more serious consequences.

The airplane looks great. I think I said it before somewhere, but I hope I can build an airplane that looks that nice eventually. Nice job!

Ed, thats the battery It landed there when I quickly removed it from the plane while it was still smoking, It stayed hot for several hours even after being soaked in water. it was still warm the next morning. I think it was having some sort of chemical reaction still.

Looks great - Now how about getting that FOD, or your beer can, off of the tarmac!   Photos don't lie, but you can always say that it's a removable  parking marker!
