Fuse mounted Comm Antennas...A grounding plane really works
I have a comm antenna about halfway between my turtle deck and vertical stab. When I got the plane it had some gold tin foil stuff stuck to the covering inside the fuse for the most of the way around the antenna. Over time it's sort of peeled off and was hanging down in my fuse. Recently one piece fell off and was laying in the fuse. I've noticed that lately I was getting a lot more noise thru my radio and I had to keep the squeltch up a lot higher than I used to. Today I busted out the 3M spray adhesive and restuck all the Gold tin foil "stuff" that was on there and I went for a flight and I couldn't believe how much clearer the radio was. I also got rid of almost all the noise I was getting when I actuated my Ivo IFA prop. Sooo some cheezy gold foil stuck to the bottom of your fabric around your comm antenna might be the ticket if your having Comm issues.

I don't think that 150cc, 8 or 10 horsepower will get my plane off of the ground!!!

Engines; what a subject!!! specially in the aviation comunity .- I wish we could enjoy the car industry engine level at same prices!!!

there is one here, rather easy, don´t know much about consumption and reliability, but it seems very very simple.

    Thanks Luke,
I got different messages from the site you posted - Guess I will find out soon - and Grainger stocks structural blind rivets in several sizes and materials - that is where I get mine - different brand than Cherry, but the structural rivets have the ridges on the stem like the Cherry Q.

I think I will just get my aluminum supplier to shear some 8 foot strips of 6061 for me - Quick, easy, and light.
    Thanks,

Hey Ed, I've never used them, but it seems a standard pneumatic rivet puller will work according to the second post in this thread:

If you have a few Douglas Fur 2x4s, a table saw and maybe a router you can make your own.  That's how Brett makes his.

If you don't have these tools, find a local cabinet shop to cut them.  (Just be sure to tell them it's a crown molding!)

    CHERRY Q RIVETS?
Question:   Can Cherry "Q" Stainless Rivets be pulled with a regular rivet gun?  I know the Cherry "N" rivets can be pulled with one, and that CherryMAX and Cherry Commercial Aerospace rivets have to use the special puller head.

    Paul,
All I know is what the salesman at Lowes told me - my machinist bible is about 50 years old now -
Actually, I think I still have one that is nearly 90 years old too - Maybe I need to read them again?
The international trade has changed things a lot - I had to start carrying two toolkits back in the 80's just to keep the bolts on the old Chevy tightened because some of the bolts had been changed to metric.
When I retired and went to Alaska to work and go to school, I had to get a new thread book on Tooljointing - We had never used that at Chrysler or McDonnell Aircraft.

I haven't tried it yet, but my plan is to hysol a strip of 3/32 plywood to the trailing edge of the strut and wrap it in orotex.   Orotex is pretty easy to work with and tough as nails. It should also be a lot easier to fare out the root than the plastic  farings.

    Larry,
It may be that some of us don't have the wood fairings and are looking for cheap alternatives.

3 hrs later and a partial dismantle later I think I got most of the Playa dust off it. Man that stuff was in every nook and cranny! Cleaned the air filter and wiped down every square inch of her today.

Why does everyone hate the wood farings so much?  It's cheap, strong, easy to do and light.
Drill 2" holes in it down it's length.  (Chips will weigh 4#) Varnish the wood on all sides after its sized. Hysol it in place. (touch up varnish if needed)  Cover with fabric and finish it to a complete weather tight seal. When properly finished, attached and sealed with fabric, there should not be any moisture to create corrosion underneath the wood.
