I spent most of the day today looking at things on the plane. I took the Matco assembly with me. It looks like it will bolt onto the Grove spring. If I choose to install it, the pivot bolt looks like it will be very close to, if not, vertical. I plan to analyze the perceived offset of the spring with more precision than "eyeballing" it.

Drained old fuel from the in cabin tank. Put 3 gal of fresh fuel in to mark a known quantity level on the face of the tank. There were no markings for level of fuel onboard. I could not see any sign of fuel while in level attitude. Saw and marked the level in the 3 point attitude. I will repeat this process with additional known quantities of fuel.

I also addressed squawks from 2 previous owners of fuel leaking from one of the carbs. The first thing I noticed was the bail securing the bowl on the forward carb was not properly installed! Checking the aft carb I detected a slight binding feel of the needle that shuts off the fuel when the bowl is full. I also noted on that carb that the floats DO NOT rise to the same level. Perhaps a difference of 1//32". My brain causes me to reason that perhaps one low float coupled with the slight binding may be preventing the fuel from shutting off. My intent is to order rebuild parts for the aft carb.

    Any insight/input?

    Thanks

    High country Wide gear
High country built me a set of his gear and I couldn't be happier with it. Its 7 and a half feet wide and around four inches up over the stock. Twenty two inches wider at the brake backing plate .The quality is top notch and the handling is great .I even landed on a plowed field cross grain and the gear soaked it up .most importantly I was able to seal up the old bungee hole in the bottom of the plane. I covered mine and made up some streamlined bungee covers. At 1400.00 the price was great too.(plus shipping)  I ran it all the way down our runway on the mains right on the centerline. so I think the alignment is perfect. Here are a couple pictures

Unfinished skyraider 2 with floats $5000 for sale
Just saw an add on Barnstormers for this unfinished Skyraider. Cheyane Wy, That's a pretty cheap price, especially if the floats are worth bringing home... I know as much about the plane as I read in the add. Jim Chuk

I am planning on driving up and tent camping the last 1/2 of the week. I am a gyro sport pilot and interested in getting into a kitfox /avid in the near future. Trying to get lessons in a cub to get my FW tail dragger add on unfortunately the instructors plane is down for maint. I have never been to Osh and need some info on not only the drive in tent camping areas, but also where will all the kitfox/avids be parked so I could meet up and talk to you guys? I am looking forward to it!

The Avid type that Doug has should work just as well as the Kitfox type - it is same wing / flaperon.
After all, the Kitfoxes are just modified Avid clones.

I didn't post this to disparage steve Henry. We all known what an awesome pilot he is. This is just to show it can happen to anyone.

This must have been while he was practicing for Valdez. Looks like some fair damage this time.

Also note how misleading and libelous the reporting is. Uneducated, unfactual, commentary from everyone who appeared on camera.

Ed you are correct Sir. Kitfox used T-style counterweights and these weights are the same as I have for the A+. Must have had an extra set from my Mk-IV.

I acquired the plane last October & have not yet flown it and probably will not for another month. The spring does not seem to be deformed but rather to have been improperly installed. The purchase included an unused Matco wheel with a 9x3.5 pneumatic tire. Witness marks indicate it was mounted on something but the tire shows no sign of use. The mounting hole has been stripped out. The last owner to fly it advised the Matco was purchased due to the original wheel banging harshly on the runway cracks. He also advised he never mounted it.

I know not what the person from whom I purchased it did. He did not fly it.

Thats a Grove tail spring. It was offered for a few years, but not any longer.

Does the plane roll out okay? Do you notice any ground handling quirks?

If yes, then you'll need to use a press to try and straighten the spring.

If no, then "It ain't broke, don't fix it."

    Tailwheel mount
I had the KF2 in normal flight attitude today giving things a careful visual check. One of the things I noticed is the tailwheel (aft nose wheel) mount points slightly to starboard at the forward end. I'll try to paint a picture since I am encountering script errors when attempting to upload a photo. The "spring" is a square piece of metal, I believe aluminum. It has a bolt at the forward attach point. The square piece continues aft between two bolts passing through a upper and lower plate, bends downward and then level to the rear where the wheel bracket is mounted. The offset from the front mount to the bolts is perhaps an eighth of an inch. The offset at the wheel bracket is, in my opinion, significant. If you understand the picture I have painted, what think you?

Ed has a full bag and a full hanger!
I guess I am going to have to find a photo of one of my taildraggers for an avatar!
Those flaperon weights must be Avid - The only Kitfox ones I have seen look like a T.
Wife has given me orders, to start getting rid of extra stuff, because it will cost too much to dig a hole big enough,
    to bury me with it!
Has anyone been buried in a Kitfox fuselage or gunsafe?

I plan to put it back but that was the first thing I pulled out when I overheated on a flight a couple of months ago. One moment the temp was at its normal 150-160 and the next time I look down it was showing close to 220. The following 10 minutes after that were very anxious with throttle reduction as the first move which brought the temp down and also put me in a 700 fpm descent. I picked out a rough sand road crossing the Intracoastal pasture below me as my landing spot while I tried increasing throttle as much as I could until the water temp was a little over 190. That was just enough throttle to barely maintain altitude which after the descent was 1500'. I debated landing out and risking damage or flying the 7 miles to make it back to the field. After a couple of minutes of maintaining level with a stabilized temp I decide to go for the runway and made it but it was a tense few minutes of flying over an area with few good places to attempt an emergency landing.

I have tested that thermostat in a pan on the stove and it appears to operate properly but had scraping marks on one side. I was not sure if it was the thermostat or the air bubble issue that we noticed while testing after that was the cause of the overheat so the thermostat has been out since then. I will install a new one soon.

  19. dav8or added a post in a topic Rotax 582 getting air in the cooling system

Rotax 532/582 uses O-rings as the seal between the water jacket and the cylinder with another type of o-ring to seal the head to the water jacket. My o-rings were still useable but I replaced them anyway with a set from JBM industries. Their O-rings are just slightly larger is material thickness which I think will help the seal. If the cylinder o-rings were leaking I would expect to see oily residue in the coolant which I have never seen and I have drained it numerous times in troubleshooting. I also do not have any signs of steam in the exhaust.

These are good thoughts but have already been checked.

    Thanks,
    Dan

WooWee! I got my Cylinders back and man they did an awesome job! They anodized the head of the cylinder, painted the base black, honed the inside of the cylinders, reseated the valves, cleaned the valves and Pistons, put new rings on and positioned everything so all I do is install the piston pin and base nuts and it's good to go! They even threw in all the gaskets!
If you are looking for cylinder work for Lyc's or Cont's ACE Cylinders in Greely, Colorado is the place to go. Ask for Joe.
