Short Field Techniques (landing -- Flaps)?

When setting up for a short field landing, and suggestions on techniques?  Do deploying flaps help much?  Slips a better alternative?

Tried a 50% flap landing tonight and I got down a bit faster however did float a bit more (though I may have been a bit fast given flap use).

Think a 1,000 strip with trees at both ends as a scenario.

If you dont have a cross wind, full flaps and watch your speed.  Play with flaps at altitude so you know the stall speed.  you should feel it in the stick long before the stall.  Watch your sink rate at altitude, you will have to use a bit of power to flare if your really dragging it in.  Keep your speed 3-5 MPH above stall and you wont be floating.  If you are flying final at 60, slow it down to 50 on short final, short short final I am around 45 but not certain, I fly by feel keeping my eyes outside the plane on final.  Elevator congrols speed, throttle controls sink rate.
