The "new" Avid owner Mark Mendick also left my last email with a few important questions about the Catalina unanswered......

Just out of curiosity, are you going to balance the rudder and elevators on your Magnum? My Avid has no provision for that....yours can easily accommodate counterweights

    Hey Leni,
I feel you're right about not wanting to bend it back (I had the same issue) but it being a primary flight control I definitely would change the bent thread at the end of the control tube. I am pretty sure it's cracked already somewhere in the threads if you look at it with a microscope.....
There were a few crashes and fatalities  because of this bent threaded rod and when I had my Avid inspected, transport canada made me instal stops for the flight controls. The UK air investigation branch has a write up about this too

    Hey Leni,
this might be an optic illusion but on the 6th photo your elevator eyebolt end connected to the torque tube on the cockpit floor seems to be bent...

Be safe and keep them flying, cheers, Laurent

    Hey Barry, looks great.
Make sure you install oversize washer where the rod end eye is installed with a bolt or nut on your mixer unit. There has been cases where a failure of the rod end eye would disconnect your flight control rod...

You can see the oversize washers on my flap actuating eye rod ends below

    Avid Catalina Canopy
I am looking to buy a canopy for an avid catalina....even a bare frame would make me happy. I am in the process of having a summer one with sides open (also good for photography and a enclosed winter one when it gets cold.......

Let me know what you have:)

    rough water landing
I landed on a big lake the other day (Butle lake/strathcona park) and it seemed the water was calm until I was about to touch down.....waves were quite big (about 1.5 feet/wind 15Mph). I should have come in much slower, dug my tailwheel in first to prevent multiple bouncing.....

  15. flywise added a post in a topic Huston! We have a problem!

    Hey Vance,
please do remove your "washer" elevator stop. There has been loss of elevator control before when installing an inadequate elevator stop. In your case the washer puts the wrong pressure on the Heim joint threads, that thread is supposed to work only in tension/compression and NOT in a bending force (up/down).
    My 2 cents...cheers

  17. flywise added a post in a topic Annual Condition Inspection (Engine and Airframe Separate?)

To all great experimental aircraft owners in the US, it is my firm belief that having an aircraft and engine log / Propeller log (not required in the us but required every else in the world) is an added value for resale. At least the buyer can assess all maintenance/work done and confirm Hrs on engine/prop/airframe. If you sell outside the US it is very hard, sometimes impossible to sell because of the lack of logs.

My two cents & keep them flying...

  19. flywise added a post in a topic Carb ice on a Stratus Soob with Bing carbs

On my bing carbs I installed electric heat, easy to install and works great. There is no power loss (the carb body is heated not the air) and you can leave it on anytime. It draws about 7Amp if I remember well

  21. flywise added a post in a topic Avid Flyer is flying (videos to prove it) :-)

Ideally your static port has to be in a "zero" pressure area, no negative/positive air during flight (the two static port interconnected is to prevent asi change when you're crabbing or flying out of yaw) . If your static port is in a "low" pressure air your airspeed will read high, "high" press air will read too low...
If your static port is inside the cockpit the airspeed will read high as the cockpit is a low press area compared to the outside. The difficult trick is to find the right position on the fuselage....

  23. flywise added a post in a topic Avid Flyer is flying (videos to prove it) :-)

Hey Jim, could your static port location give you the false indicated airspeed?? Is your static port in the cabin?
I had the same high airspeed reading and found the cause to be my static port...
    My 1 cent, cheers, Laurent
