  1. So I see 100 hp and 120 hp small turboprops.

Throw cost out the window, as that is a non issue.

My 4 has the big tanks. 28 gallons I think. So I could stay up for a while.

  2. Wow!!! Any update? You live out in the middle of no where like me looks like! My house is too close to the highway... So I am thinking of building another house 250 yards or so back and tearing down this one. Oh, one thing that is cool is my property is at least 3,500' long... And leveled and flat.

  3. My tail wheel teething was done in a Citabria... No flaps and a worn out motor...Hot summers in Louisiana. My instructor said do a power on stall... It never broke. I was just holding it there using all of the control surfaces... He screamed, "You have it stalled, WTF are  you doing?"

I was used to 150s and 152s... They would break... And you'd  roll over....

What are the 3 rules? Airspeed, fuel, and fuel?

  4. I got the popcorn but they don't let us have beer here at work.  Kind of pisses me off that I can't have both for the next week or so.  Pretty sure the point has been made pretty clear.  Shake your dicks boys this pissing contest is over.. don't go chasing waterfalls.  <bonus points to whoever can tell me where I got that from :lmao:  hint, cmon captn you gotta know your making references to the songs...

    :BC:

A pop hit song from the 90s? Seems like it was three black girls? What do I win? :P

  5. :lmao: I have one of those old ceramic ones with a single light bulb! It belonged to my BigMama! That is as high tech as I am going to get!

  6. You'd have to mod the oil system. I think on some motors part of the down housing is the "oil pan". Plus it needs a gear drive. They turn 5-6k at wide open.

I used to wrench on outboards in the early 80s and now on my own stuff. Thought about putting a V4 OMC on a plane, but gear drive, cooling system, etc. It would be  a war horse though at 115 hp. I don't want to even think about my 280hp Merc!!!

  7. Speaking of a 503 Rotax, I don't recommend coating the skirts or anything below the crown. When at operating temps there is just not enough clearance for the coating. Coating the crown is OK since clearance isn't an issue. Don't know about a 582 but I expect the same clearance issue with them as well. Rotax runs pretty tight clearances.

I have a friend that does it. I will ask him how thick it is. It can't be much.

  8. The cost is only a very small part of the consideration for me. If it was only cost then it wouldn't even be a consideration and I would just buy the OEM pistons. However, I have been a sledder for many years and have had the best luck with coated skirts and crowns.  I feel that the coatings are a big plus for longer engine life and better resistance to seizure. What I am looking for is a hypereutectic cast aluminum piston with moly coated skirts and a hard anodized crown. For sleds I like the SPI pistons and have had good fortune with them. I haven't had time to look but I'm hoping SPI has a compatible piston.

As for the size, There are plenty of shops near me that can hone the cylinders to achieve proper clearance.

I was thinking about coatings before I got to your post, if anyone flying was running coated pistons. I too run hotrod two strokes, but outboards. The last set I had done, he had a teflon coating for the skirts and a ceramic thermal barrier for the crown. He didn't do the ring lands though... I wanted them done too as an experiment for carbon build up.

  9. No, that is actually the paper on the lexan. FAA didn't even mention it when they inspected it. Its off now. It protected the lexan while trailering.

Okay. I was wanting to make a cover for mine. Not for just for the heat when it is outside in the summer, but to keep dust off in the hanger.

  10. Everybody has a mission for their plane, and needs that plane to do it. If I had a hangar or my own strip, then I'd have a different view of what I want. Experimental aircraft are getting above some GA aircraft, price wise anyhow, So its not all about money anymore. Lets face it, we all need at least 2 aircraft.

    Three. STOL, cross country, aerobatics!!!

Next I will look for a Mooney!!! :lmao:

  11. I know my way around planes. Worked/slaved at an FBO in the late 80's. I have enough hrs to get my license to wrench, but I have a friend that is a duster pilot and an AI on the side. So what would be the point?

I have 2 hrs in a Scout. I liked it. I need a few more I guess. I have several hrs in a Citabria. It was a worn out 115hp dog and I still had fun.

I have the money to spend. Both planes are within 30 grand of each other, the Scout being the most, but also has the most hours (1150), more complex, more expensive to fly...

The Citabria has 150hrs TT and 160hp. That is what hooked me.

And I know, these two are no replacement nor are they even close to performance KitFox/Avid planes provide. I never was comparing them to these two. I guess I like American Champion.

My Avid is not for sale!!! :flamegun:
