I found out something interesting. Grove put out two different gear legs for the Magnum. One for Tri-gear (16.5") and one for TD (21.5 "). The main gear on this plane is for a TD which is 5" taller than the Tri-gear main gear legs. That plus the fact that its running 8.50's instead of 8's might explain why it sits nose low and seems heavier than needed when adding another person in the plane. I might have to do another W&B. My Dad has been flying it but he is fairly new to flying and this plane.
Options are to put the 8 inch tires back on, raise the nose 5 ", fly it like it is without a passenger or put the thing back on its tail.

I was told by the guy who flew it down to my Dad that is was a great flying airplane.
I was told it weighs around 1100 but I have not pulled the W&B sheet in it yet to check weight or CG. It has the 160 horse engine in it. The guy said its a real performer.

Update: I went back to the Airport today and taxied the Magnum again. With out my father in the plane it was a night and day difference to handle on the ground. Seem the extra 200 pounds of weight in the passenger seat makes a lot of difference. I still think it needs a tailwheel
I did a mag check and had a big drop in RPM.  The engine stumbled to the point I thought it was going to quit. It has one mechanical mag and one electronic mag. I was not using the standard RPM for a check (1300) so I will do one more check. I may need to check my machanical mag out. I have a guy locally that is known to do great Mag work and he is a good friend of mine. I will get him out this week for a look over.

I can answer that TJay. The designers name was Dean Wilson. Not sure exactly how the story goes but in the search for a bumper for the amphibian design he used a Wilson Basketball for that bumper. With each new kit came a Wilson Basketball still in its original box.

Flywise, it was trailered with wing supports. They had already been removed in this picture.

Thank you Brian. I’d like to hear how yours handles on the ground. This one is horrible.

    The Magnum is here!
My Dad showed up with the Magnum yesterday. We spent all day unloading it and putting it all back together. Initial taxi testing shows a problem with the braking. It has a castering nose wheel and it’s by far the worst ground handeling airplane I’ve been in to date.
I spent an hour taxing. It’s a nice plane but needs some major attention.

Nothing is open into the engine. Once the Flywheel and Rubber Hardi Disk are installed the first half of the gearbox goes on and covers it. I have pulled that apart and it is clear.
    Thank you for the ideas.

Agree, This is what I and other have said too in relation to the hardi disk. The other checks were more to ease my suspicion more than anything. I feel very confident that it will be fine but a test run is the only thing that will determine that. I'll let you know.

No, I did not remove the mounting plate over the carbs. I opened the carb slides all the way and turned the engine over several times to check the rotary valve and edges. Everything looks good. I still feel it was gearbox related as I was very careful to make sure everything was covered and installed properly during the other updates. I will test run the engine and see how she sounds. I'll let you know how it works out.

Update: I pulled the spark plugs, gearbox and opened the carb slides and did a full inspection and several rotation of the engine. I ran a magnet through everything I could and used a mirror to look into everything possible. Everything looks as it should. I cleaned the gearbox out and reinstalled the halves. Someone had installed 3/16 lock washers on the hex head bolts that hold the gearbox halves together so i ran to the bolt store and bought 11 new 6M lock washers. Everything will go back together today with new oil and safety wire. I will post again after a test run hopefully this weekend.

Anything is possible but highly unlikely. I went through the carb and cleaned it out before reinstalling it.

Do they base the amount on logged TW time?

Allen,  I agree. I’ll start with draining the gear box oil and check the plug and pulling all the spark plugs. If nothing is seen there I’ll split the gearbox again.
Cloud, all the fuel was drained from the wings and both fuel selectors shit off from the time of left the hangar.

    582 unexplainable stoppage
I wanted to run something by the group as it has me stumped. After changing the gearbox from the B to the C it sat for a week or so while I completed a few more projects. I was out in the garage a week or so later and i turned the prop by hand and it came up solid. Like metal to metal solid. I backed the prop off a little bit and it was free again. I have rotated the gearbox now several times and it has never again done it again.
Here is the work I have done prior to this happening. Gearbox change / new oil, removed one carburetor, milled in a vacuum port and installed the Hac system. Installed an air port in the air cleaner for the Hac., removed the intake manifold for paint and new gaskets, I did pull the front spark plug out during the gearbox swap.
In my experience it felt gear related.
    I would appreciate your feedback.

I use Amzoil Interceptor. I pay for a distributor account and get a discount. I can always drop ship you some too if you are interested. My cost of course.  I am going to have to make an order here soon myself. I buy a case at a time (4 gallons per case). After looking at my cylinders over the winter and the fact that it makes far less mess on the plane because its clear I wont go back to the QS. I have nothing against QS and still run it in my Jet skis just like the Amzoil better for the plane.

I need to get a wire to the wintips
The last project before flying season. I want to install the puck flashing lights I bought during Oshkosh last year.  I need to pull a wire to the end of the wings. Has anyone did this after the plane was done. How did you do it?
