  1. Had my first snow landing yesterday. Having a difficult time gauging height above the ground at landing (which I heard is not uncommon).  Luckily I had trees nearby on the side of the runway so used that as a guide.  On an open lake, what do you do?  Any words of wisdom in this regard?

Landing on snow during sunny conditions is no problem. Bright sunny days the sun will cast shadows on the drifts so that will give you some depth perception Of where the snow will be. Cloudy days are a whole different situation. If you have full snow coverage and gray overcast use extreme caution. In these conditions you cannot tell the difference between the horizon or the snow.  Try to land as close to a reference point as you can, reeds, sboreline, fenceline ect. Concentrate on the object that is visible and try to land off to the side of it. With a long final carry power  to ground effect while watching your reference point. Keep the power on until you slowly settle onto the snow. If you have no recefences I have thrown my coat out the door. If you are taking off of a area you will be returning to I like to taxi up and down the landing area a couple of times doing s turns before I takeoff. This sometimes helps find points to concentrate on.

n sunny days it is no problem judging where the snow is

  2. Ed,

Next time I get to my hanger I will measure them for you.

Bandit,  What is the span and chord dimension on those SkyRaider flaps and ailerons?  I think mine will be 6.5' flap and 6' ailerons and 15" chord on both?

  3. What pieces and arts made the Bandit alight weight MKIV besides the 503?  I think the 582 was a more popular option from what Ive seen on the used market.

About the only difference is the sling seat, no fiberglass leading edge and no fabric interior.

  4. Got it!  It all makes sense now, I think. :)

I just found them in Aircraft Spruce. Nutserts.

Bandit,  The Nutserts which expand outward will crack wood, and are not the same as Rivnuts which compress lengthwise.  EDMO

Nutserts are what I used to secure the aluminum cover on my wing. You do have to be careful when crimping them though.

  5. Bandit,

I don't understand what you mean by "The fasteners I used pressed into a hole I drilled into the ribs"  Maybe a couple of pics would help?  Since you used 10/32 machine screw fasteners around the outside edge, I guess you installed nuts somewhere as well?

I think they are called blind nuts or rivnuts. Drill the hole and press them in. They are threaded on the inside. If I did it again I would put a little epoxy on them before I pressed them in.

  6. Bandit,  what thickness alu did you use? How did you bend it to match the shape of the wing, or is it thin enough that just fastening it will shape it?  What fasteners are you using?

I don' t remember what thickness the alu was. It is light enough to follow the curve of the wing. The fasteners I used pressed into a hole I drilled into the ribs, then drilled the alu and screwed it down. I think the screws are 10/32. I also ran a row parallel to the front spar. For the hinge I just used fabric glued to the front spar.

  7. You are right, that is a perfect snow.  I get to see pictures of it while I look out my window at a Sunny, 75 degree day!  No shovelling, no sliding, and above all, no freezing!  Glad someone likes it so they live there and leave room in FL for me!

    Jim,

If the weather cooperates I'll try to bring the Cherokee your way next week.

I'm glad you like Florida makes more room for our ski flying. Everybody that has been to Florida tells me you have to stay in the house with the air conditioner on. I would rather shiver than sweat.

  8. We got about 10" of new snow last night. Had to dig my way to the hanger but I got there. Installed my skis on the Avid and went out and had fun. With my wing jack I can get my main skis and tail ski on in about a hour and 15 minutes.

  9. I don't know if this will work for you, but Avid put a fiberglass cover over the wing tanks  (I only have the manual for the Magnum) - If you could get them from the supplier we have on here, they should match the wing profile, and maybe you could hinge them and add the fasteners.  I think this might be better than aluminum.

One other thing - the fabric is pulling on the root rib - If you wrap around and end the fabric at the rib outboard of the tank, you may need to brace that rib.

Now, if someone can help me out here, and list the guy who makes the fiberglass for Avids....I forgot to take my memory pills today!

    EDMO

Ed I never braced my rib. No problems so far.

  10. I installed the plastic wing tanks inside my crap fiberglass tanks. Instead of covering it with fabric again I covered it with aluminium. At the leading edge I just used fabric for the hinge then screwed the rest to the ribs. Now I can access the tanks with no trouble. As a matter of fact tomorrow I have to open it up and replace the fuel line. I would never cover it with fabric again. I will take pictures tomorrow if I make it over there.

  11. My tanks rotted and I never used a drop of ethanol.

    Bandit,

How do you KNOW you didn't get moonshine gas?   I have heard that the only way to tell for sure is to test it - seems like some places buy a load of whatever they can get at times.

    EDMO

Ed, I guess I do not know if the local gas station lied to me. I never tested it. I just always bought fuel out of the pump that said premium gas with no ethanol.

  12. I fly with the door open all the time. Be careful when you open it in flight. The outside handle will slam up against the front spar if you do not have a good grip on the door. The airplane will want to roll to the right real bad. One of the disadvantages of a open door.
