Jim and Joey, I dug around and found my old CPS catalog and looked up the pictures of their damaged pistons. Both of your examples looked like a cold seizure. This type of failure is due to inadequate warm up.

Sorry guys I had to go over to the other side for a minute. Mr John M called me a fake. I had to clear that up. Glad I didn't have a snoot full,my reply might not have been so tame. Of course what do I know I do not have over 4000hrs in a Avid.

  11. Bandit added a post in a topic More about Flaperon rigging

I think people are making a big deal out of the the flaperons. I have my flap stop nut turned as far in as it will go, not sure what degree that would be. I'm not sure if full flaps on takeoff makes much differnce on takeoff roll. I think it might help take more weight off the gear in rough or deep snow with skis on, or rough ground with wheels. Full flaps on landing means a steeper glide angle, it will drop out of the sky like a rock. Full flaps on landing makes it much harder to judge the landing flare. I always come in fast or ad power about 15 ft above the ground When using full flaps. Super fast sink rate at slow speed. Crosswind landings. I have learned not to use flaps in a crosswind landings. More than once I have ran out of flaperon. Like Leni said do not forget about your rudder. I think I had bruises on the inside of my knee because I slammed the stick so far to the right. I just gave a ride to a friend the other night. We were at full gross full flaps. Came in a little fast and added a little power on flare. Greased it on no problem. Hell I suprised myself. Don't worry about text book flight instrutor landings, these airplanes take a little different technique. Most of all Don't be afraid of them they are a blast to fly.

  16. Bandit added a post in a topic Insurance

All I have is fire, wind, hail ect on the hull. Only the minimum liability to be legal. I did figure wrong on the hourly rate to fly my Avid. I figured regular gas, which should have been 93 octane. So it would make it around $45 an hour to fly by putting 65 hrs a year on it.

    Insurance  $640
    Hanger rent $840
    Misc   $200
    No loan interest.
                     Total $1680 per year.
Fuel 5 gallons an hour at $2.39 per gallon, $12 an hour.
    Oil maybe $3 an hour.
Fuel and oil around $15 an hour.
I fly my Avid around 65 hours a year. 65 into $1680 is $26 an hour. $26 plus $15 is $41 an hour to fly my stripped down 503 powered Avid.

  19. Bandit added a post in a topic Trim system and header tank

The spring is connected to the trim control not the flaperons. I can only get up trim with this system. To get down trim I use the flaperons. It doesn't take much. Yes, the trim lever and spring pull the elevator to the up position, just like a elevator trim tab, but much simpler.

    Trim system and header tank
Here is my trim system. Total cost 50 cents. No sense for a complicated trim system. This is how my header tank is plumbed. A header tank is no different than a big piece of gas line. No reason to vent it. The gas caps do have to be vented though.

  24. Bandit added a post in a topic Avid speedwing.... Impressions from those that have flown one?

If you see a Standard Avid for sale most of the time it is a speedwing or a Subaru powered Avid. I have flown a extended 582 powered Avid and have flown in a Subaru powered Fat Avid, those airplanes flew great. Never have flown a regular speedwing.
