  1. Sure, now I find out about it.  After I bought 10 or 12 gallons at the regular price in the last month....:( JImChuk

As often as you are covering planes, I thought you'd be a dealer by now! :lmao:  Anyway, probably should mark March in your calendar, they usually have this sale every year in March.  Don't know if September will now be a regular or not.

  3. There was a company that had a device that strictly relied on transponders - Zaxon or Zarron, can't remember exactly.  I believe they are out of business though.

  4. You guys just using mild steel to fab these parts?

No, mine are 4130  like most of the plane's steel. I made them out of a flat sheet  except for the connecting tube. I  bent them to the shape then added some plates for better foot traction.  It isn't clear in my pictures, but I designed them so the strength of the pedals, particularly the connection to the brake cylinders, is not dependent on my welding ability, which is nothing to brag about.

  5. Yea this builder made the left side pedals shorter in order to use beachcraft pedals. I’ll put out a request for some stock ones

You don't want stock ones, they have very ineffective braking due to poor geometry.

    Here are the stock ones:

  6. Do you have a second story in the apartment in the back, or a real tall airplane?  Oh, and one other difference, your wall is up.....  Looking good!  I love the smell of sheet rock in the morning.... :-)  JImChuk

No apartment, but I am going to make that part 2 stories, with the second story all storage. If I ever need it I could finish it out for an apartment I guess.

I love the smell of sheetrock in the morning as long as someone else is doing it!  I hired a guy to hang and finish it.  I really really really dislike doing drywall, especially the finishing.  This guy barely needed to sand it when he was done.  When I do it, it looks like a two year old threw some mud on the wall and then used it for fingerpainting.

I wonder how many Avid project planes will fit up there??? Hmmmmm

  7. Progress continues.  Like building an airplane, 80% done, 80% to go.....

The !@#%^^ firewall was approved today!  Now I can frame out the bathroom, get the plumbers in, and then only electric remains.  I can see a light at the end of the tunnel, I hope it isn't a train!

One thing the firewall does is emphasize how tall this hangar is.  Looks like the great wall of China (or maybe Trumps border wall).

  8. 3rd flight today.  Just like Leni says, gas thru the tanks is what gets you there!  Found my tailwheel chain/spring arrangement had slack, and wondered if this was contributing to my ungraceful zigging & zagging post touchdown.  Moved some washers around to get rid of the slack, and presto!  I could smoothly control the direction I'm rolling at higher speeds!  My landings were not perfect, but way better than last time.  JimChuk's grin has arrived!  I am feeling like light at the end of the tunnel is not that of an oncoming train; that this can be done with grace...eventually!  In Leni's terms, that saucy Spanish gal who with body language and taunting look asked if I was man enough to dare try to conquer her has been given her answer! .

I learned to fly years ago in a C-150, and hated that sprung nosewheel steering.  My old Tri-Pacer had direct connection to the nosewheel, which I liked much better.  On the Avid, all that slack in the tailwheel connection to rudder must have some function, and maybe some guys just let the tailwheel swivel.  Being a TW newb, I dunno.  But in fast taxiing I have found that a more direct connection to that tailwheel is beneficial.  Is there controversy here?  Or is there a tradeoff I don't groc as yet?

    Another Heinlein fan?

  9. FAA registry shows N417Z as deregistered, with a 'Sale Reported'.  Original Airworthiness was in 1988, deregistration happened in 2013.  The last registered owner was in California, so how it got to Iowa is probably a story.  I wonder if someone bought it as a project, moved it to Iowa, and then never did anything with it?

  10. I bought a used garmin 795 $1000 and a used gdl 39  $800.  That combo provides adsb transmit and receive. Any one else flying with a Adsb shows up on my garmin 795. Pretty cool to watch. I was flying a few days ago and did not see traffick headed toward me at 90 degrees until my garmin alerted me to their presence. I looked to my left, saw the plane coming. The garmin even shows their altitude. Adsb will help prevent collisions. We just had a midair collision death a few weeks back so I enjoy the added safety of Adsb

Neither the 795 nor the gdl 39 provide ADS-B out.  NO portable device is approved for ads-b out, and I highly doubt they ever will.  For ADS-B out on our planes, the UAvionix device that replaces a nav light is a great option - it just got it's approval from the FAA at Oshkosh.

  11. Huh, 'A grizzly broke into the cabin' and 'I had a good time' aren't phrases I'd put together.....

LOL.  That would not be a good time if I was there.  It happened a couple days before I arrived.  I was the first one there and walked up to the cabin.  The hair stood up on the back of my neck because all I had at the time was bear spray.  We spotted the grizzly later on the side of the mountain looking straight at us.  A little erie to say the least.

I'd have gotten in my airplane and left the grizzly to his cabin....

I just remember the old joke about telling the difference between black bear scat and grizzly scat - grizzly smells like pepper (spray) and has little bells in it. :lmao:

  12. I did something similar, but modified the pedals so the arm is at the bottom of the pedal instead of the top.  I used the MC4-G cylinders which are the shortest Matco has, and they fit in the shorter space.  I had tried the 'intensifier' kit on the old MC-5 cylinders, but really didn't notice any improvement.  I attached pictures of both the old and new, hope they make it!

  13. I'll be arriving Sunday and leaving Saturday.  I'm driving my 5th wheel up (well, gooseneck now), and I'll be in Camp Scholler.  Splurged for an electric/water site this year.  The generators weren't a big deal, but the water tanks are too small, and hauling it was a royal pain.  Glamping, not Camping! :P

Love the 115 gallons of fresh water and built in genny in my new rig.  Can boondock for 11 days at OSH no worries...

That works, as long as the gray tank is 115 gallons also!  Mine only has 50 gallons, and that gets me about 4 days.  The gray tank is 60 gallons, so then its haul the gray out, haul some fresh in.  Mine actually has two gray tanks, but one only has the kitchen sink draining into it, so it seldom gets full.  I figure I'll have to have the truck come pump mine out at least once during the week.
