The electric/water sites aren't gone yet - they don't open them for reservations until 30 days before Airventure.  I haven't tried before - with the old camper, and just my son and I, the generator and the water tank were plenty.  If the wife goes, then the generator would probably be ok, but the water tank would be a little small.  But hey, at least I don't bring golf carts.  Although, last year i got 2 large skateboard type things with a 2 cycle gas motor.  Actually works well for Oshkosh, they are big enough I could strap a milk crate on the back to carry stuff, but small enough I can park them with the bicycles.  My daughter got me license plates for them - ER 1 and ER 2......  She has such confidence in me!  )

Somewhere in Camp Scholler.  I'll try to get an electric/water site since the wife may come. Otherwise anywhere in the 24hr generator sites work - then I'll have an excuse to get the 2nd Honda 3000 and use the parallel kit I already have ) . The old camper I only needed one .  Every other year I've gotten there on Wednesday, and had to park south of the ultralight approach lane in the 'overflow' camping area near the dump station.   I actually kind of like it over there - quiet, and you can spread out a little more, but they don't let you camp over there until everything is full.

This new one really isn't camping, which is good, since I'm not a camping fan.  I always said it'd be fine if the room service wasn't so slow!  )

Obviously I should have researched more before I got my seaplane rating last year.  That school looks a lot more interesting.

I'd register for that forum if only I could figure out the answer to the registration question.  Seaplanes, seaplane, seaplane pilots are all wrong.  Sigh....

I think you should check with EAA first.  While it is legal for you to get instruction in an experimental, I don't believe you can get primary instruction in an experimental, I think you are only allowed to get transition/type specific training.

Ok, that seems to work. Here are two others, plus a model C brochure that says it is 7' 9.5" folded..

    Kenneth,
Be sure to measure the horizontal stabilizer width as well - I didn't, and taking it off and putting it back on was no fun.  I could only get a 8' wide trailer, with a 7'6" opening to bring my Model C home in.  The folded width was 94" as I recall, which was 4" wider than the door opening.  The horizontal stabilizer was the same width as the wings folded.  The left wing has nothing in it but a wingtip light and the pitot tube, so it was easy to take off - I only had to take off one wing to get it to fit.  The tail was much more trouble!  I used carpet strips screwed to the inside wall to hold it during the trip from Northern CA to central Illinois.  My trailer was 20', and it fit in with a few inches in the front, and a few inches in the back. I put a piece of 2" foam insulation on the inside front wall during the trip, both to cushion in the event it shifted and contacted the front wall, and as witness to how hard any impact was. Fortunately nothing shifted and no dents were noted in the foam when I got home.
Maybe I can attach a picture of it in the trailer.....

  10. marksires added a post in a topic Avid B or C kit for sale

That is about the same age as my Avid.  The guys that built it bought the kit in 1988 or 1989 - finished it in 1991.  Mine has a grey head 582.  They told me they paid $12,000 for the kit.  I might be interested in the floats if they aren't damaged too bad, particularly if he does have the mounting hardware.  I can fix fiberglass (also building a fiberglass airplane), so that part doesn't worry me too much.  If you can find out the kit serial number, you should be able to find the model mostly.  The serial number to model mapping gets fuzzy during the transition periods.  Mine is a 'C', but they bought the dual radiator w/upgraded cowl option that later became standard on the MkIV.  It also now has the round rudder.  They ground looped it, and had to rebuild the tail, so bought the round rudder tail a that time.

    Ed,
Here is the link to the PDF on the Matco site:  http://media1.veracart.com/matco/item_pdfs/3648/document1.pdf

The stock Model C brake pedals were actually worse than their 'don't do it this way' picture.  The master cylinder push rod attached at the top of the brake pedal.  The means you start off with less than a 1:1 ratio, and the ratio actually gets worse the farther you push the pedal.

I remade the pedals so the cylinder attaches to the bottom like in the picture, and extended the top as much as I could without it interfering with the firewall.  This got me pretty close to the 2.5:1 ratio they want.

When it warms up enough to go the hangar, I'll take pictures of my new pedals and post them.

    Ed,
On the brakes - my Model C had the single puck Matco's, and the original MC-5 cylinders with the reservoirs built in.  Braking was horrible, wouldn't hold even at 3,000 RPM for the runup.  I talked to Matco at Oshkosh one year, and they asked what plane I had. When I said Avid, he laughed and said the 'how not to do it picture' on their web site was basically the Avid brake pedals.  I changed the cylinders to the 'short' cylinders with a remote reservoir, and built a new set of brake pedals that got the geometry up to the 2.5 to 1 ratio Matco wants.  Now it holds fine at 5,500 RPM, even with the original single puck brakes on the wheels.

Still squirrely on asphalt.  I need to make a new left wing strut after a swerve doing fast taxi's (which I now know is dumb) met up with one of the runway lights.  Fortunately it just got the strut, put a dent in the tube and popped off the spruce reinforcement/fairing.  The reinforcement/fairing was coming loose, so I need to replace that before flying it anyway.  Now I have to make a new strut.

    Welcome Kenneth,

I'm in Jacksonville, about 70 miles NE of St. Louis.  I have an Avid Model C STOL, currently needing some work - reskin and weld up a new left wing strut that has some damage.  But that will be a spring project - the Hangar isn't heated, and the -1 high forecast for Monday isn't something I care for much.

I'm also looking for a set of Amphib floats for it, since I just got my seaplane rating.  If you're up this way, give me a buzz if you want to have a look.

Just got my ASES rating earlier this month.  It was the most fun I've ever had flying!

Now I'm looking for amphibious floats to put on my Avid model C.... Any thoughts or recommendations welcome!
