Ed, the insulation is sandwiched between the sheeting/roofing and the metal frame.  If you look at the pictures, you should be able to see it.  One advantage to using this instead of spray foaming it, it separates the metal skin from the internal frame with a (very) compressed layer of fiberglass where the skin is attached to the girts/purlins.  Should minimize heat transfer into the building.
Putting it up on the walls, we had to use very sticky double sided tape at the top and bottom to hold it in place while we got the siding on.  We do the same thing on the roof, but that is to keep it pulled tight.

I'd vote for steel as well (4130), but this is experimental aviation, so it's definitely your call.

I'm glad I learned to fly in a Cessna for just that reason.  That spring metal gear was really good at teaching me to land smoothly.  Now that I fly a Cherokee, that oleo gear makes landing a cinch.

If you have something ready when I start putting my Avid back together later this year, I'll be very interested.  Something wider would be great!  I don't anticipate any tundra tires needed here in Florida though.

Jim, makes perfect sense, and the insulation came that way.  The 'starter' roll is 4 feet wide.  The next 7 rolls are 6 feet wide, then the 'finish' roll is also 4 feet wide.  The walls were the same.  Didn't really make that much difference on the walls, but I can see it making a huge difference on the roof.  The insulation is one piece, eave to eave.  To get it up, I'm planning to roll it up like a biblical scroll, then carry it to the center were it goes.  I have 4 30' long, 2" wide ratchet straps, and I'll put 2 on each side from the peak to the eave so the insulation has something to roll on, and then let both sides roll down at the same time.   I can use my scissor lift underneath to get the straps out before we put the roofing on.
I'll be glad when this is done.  I lie awake at night trying to figure out how to accomplish some of the things that need to be done.  But then I'll start putting my Avid back together, and I'll lie awake thinking about how to do some of that

Smart move, I also refuse to buy anywhere that has any CCR's above the county/state/city requirements.  There is always some *sshole in a neighborhood association that makes it his/her job to decide if everyone else is in compliance or not.  If anyone wants to decide what I do or don't do with the property I paid for, they can buy it.  There is always a price I'll sell it for!

Yes, the first piece will be the worst.  I actually think the first 2 pieces on each side will be the worst - 3 feet isn't a lot of room to walk on when the first pieces are set.  At least with a 1/12 pitch roof, walking won't be that big of a challenge.  I'm planning to rent the 45' man lift again as well as the forklift I have rented.  I don't do ladders!   For the first pieces, I plan to lift them up with the forklift, on the platform, with one guy on the platform and one guy in the lift.  They should be able to get the first piece on each side set and secured that way, and probably the second piece also.  After that, I can lift the pieces up with the forklift, and they/we should be able to carry them to the next row as we go along.  If it wasn't for the insulation, the roof could probably done in 1 or 2 days, but stopping every 2 pieces to put another roll of insulation up takes a lot of time.
I wish you were closer too!  An experienced guy supervising could probably make it go a lot faster/safer.  I'm happy with how it has gone so far, but it is definitely been slower since I've been learning as I go.  Fortunately I hired the right concrete guy.  I haven't had to shim, or use a come along to straighten anything, it was dead straight and plumb when we put the steel up on the bolts.

One piece hydraulic, but a little different than the typical hydroswing that swings straight out.  www.hpdoors.com  It puts no load on the building going up or down, so the only load transferred to the building is wind load.  Made getting that big an opening much simpler/cheaper.

From the location in the hangar, I guess the cherokee flies the most.

More progress, all the walls are up, now for the roof.  That is going to be a b*tch, trying to figure out how to get 25' long pieces of metal up on top of the 18' tall walls without getting anyone hurt.  The insulation that goes under the steel but above the purlins means we can't reach panels from below for the most part - the insulation is 6' wide, so it would be tough to reach from the sides.  We'll figure it out, it can be done.
It is looking like a hangar now, just has a great big skylight at the moment!

Lightspeed Tango Wireless.  Love them, no wires to tangle up is great in our tight cockpits.

Aircraft Spruce went through this as well.  There were lots of complaints on the Cozy forum, and I made Jim Irwin aware of it.  He apologized on the forum, and it was fixed almost immediately.

Amazon only has tehm, Aircraft Spruce has some different sizes.  They are basically the same price on Amazon as they are at Aircraft Spruce.  The large is actually a few bucks cheaper at ACS - whodathunkthat?
I saw them at Oshkosh last year, but they were a little pricey for me.  I might change my mind based on your recommendation.

Yep, R10 between the skin and frame.  Mainly to keep the air conditioning in, but this last week it would have needed to keep the heat in!  We had ice last week, first time in like 30 years.  But it is going to be 70 tomorrow.
The insulation is why it is taking so long.  I need a dry weekend to get one wall up.  If I can’t complete the wall I can’t start it, since the fiberglass would still be exposed and ruined if it rained.

Love the rock wool insulation - used it on my last project.  Kills noise 1000% better than fiberglass, and much easier to work with.

I'm pretty sure at this point the deity of your choice doesn't want me to finish this hangar.  We had record rains all summer which kept me from making much progress, although we did manage to get all the framework up.  Siding and roofing has to wait for a dry spell that I have time to work on it since I have the fiberglass insulation package that goes between the siding/roofing and the frame.  I was out of town most of the fall due to a big project, so of course it was sunny and dry for the most part.  Now I'm back, and we are once again wet, with record cold for Florida thrown in for extra fun.  We got on wall of siding put up, and the top trim on so it is mostly weather tight on that side last week, and so this week we have an ICE STORM, in FLORIDA.  WTF????

Sound right - but FUN at any speed!
I remember when I did my Seaplane rating in a Cub (100hp jugs).  Climb - 60mph, approach 60mph, cruise 60mph, ....   Keeping track of airspeed was tough! :-)

  24. marksires added a post in a topic Mk4 Gross weight

Maneuvering speed (turbulent air speed) goes up with gross weight for a simple reason.  It is the speed at which the airfoil will stall before it is accelerated beyond its limits.   Heavier planes stall at higher speeds than light ones if the wing/airfoil is the same.  I was always trying to wrap my head around inertia as a reason, but I found a good explanation of it a while back.
