582 exhaust hanger ideasHi,
We've been having a terrible time trying to keep our exhuast pipe hanger mount from cracking. I started out with the factory provided MK1V mount which cracked all over. I tried to modify best I could but I still get beaks or needs tightening way too frequently.
Successful ideas/pictures?
Inverted 582 on Avid

582 Fat Avid?I am trying to decide what to pursue. I have a MK1V with a good 582 that has a messed up fuselage. The money to get back in the air will be the same. Do I want to go with another standard fuselage, or should I get a fat fuselage. Currently, I would have to use the 582 with heavy hauler wings and tail feathers. Our mission use is pleasure flying out of approved grass strips. My son 16, is currently 5 10 ish, 150ish, I'm the same but about 170. My current airplane has a grove gear, battery all the way in the rear and 11# lead lead in the tail. I invission that the fat Avid with bush gear would weigh as much or even less than the current setup. I am thinking going the Fat way for future considerations as we grow, or a bigger engine in the future.
Pros/cons ideas......
thanks,

I have just learned via boat web sites that depending on the epoxy, a tank will leak after 7 urs on average of "real gas".

larr added a post in a topic Spin characteristics of a Mark IV
I have extensively tried to spin my MK1V stol wing. I found that the airplane will not stay in a stall, therfore, the spin almost instantly turns into a spiral, rapidly picking up speed. In most cases, even while prepared for it, the airplane would rapidly approach VNE before the nose could be brought level. As a result of my testing, I have concluded that it is safer NOT to practice spinning the airplane. It has to really be forced into it, and then instantly spirals. I attribute this to the airfoil and washout, as with any rotation, the upper wing is flying again. Actually, I don't believe that the wings fully stall, but just does not develope enough lift to full support the airplanes weight, thus the mushing.

Ed,
Are you thinking of Caswell? http://www.caswellplating.com/restoration-aids/epoxy-gas-tank-sealer.html

Thank Bryce,
While I don't disagree with you, I was hoping everyone would say no problem, or snake oil fixed it! Just thinking of the long term. I thought that 100LL was bad for a Rotax 2 stroke. We are fortunate to have mogas here, but for how long.......?

Wing Fuel Tanks leakage?Has anyone experience fuel tank leakage from a 90's kit? What is your serial #? What were the initial symptoms, how long running with ethanol?
I have my plane down for a while, and while I do not currently have a problem, I wonder if doing something now while its down anyway may be in order. We have only just begun to use ethanol auto fuel. The airplane was flying in 93. serial 1328D. Anyone know what resins were used then? 14 gal tanks.
Thanks,
ps. I can't get along with ipad/yahoo to post on the other site, so if anyone want to post my stuff there and post the answers back - that would be great!
Anyone know why I can't get along with yahoo?

Yahoo Avid groupHi have repeatedly tried to post on the yahoo group, but yahoo won't let me. Don't know why...
Anyway, I wonder if most here are a member of the yahoo group too? I am hoping I wont be missing anything by not being able to participate there.
That said, if anyone knows Chris Blokan's email, would you mind sending it. Yahoo won't let me do that either.
Thanks,

Thanks Bryce,
We may try the same. My son is flying now and je has bigger shoes than I. I may try that before moving the pedals closer.

Iron Design stinger springChris, I noticed that you are using a stinger spring from Iron Design. I have one being made for my Skybolt, and thought the Avid would be good for one too. ( 2 broken springs this year)
Any reports on it?
Thanks,

How long have you been floorless? Any issues such as increase wear or heavy foot?

larr added a post in a topic Fabric Doors
Yes, I agree. I had thought of just a foam seal in the winter to take care of excessive air. In the summer, the doors are always open anyway. I'm looking at weight and time savings potential. The doors that I currently have, have a lot of bondo that I was hoping to get rid of.

larr added a post in a topic Avid seat options
Some of the tubing in the tail leaf spring support area cracked, broke and forced the tail spring/wheel assembly to the side, where I had no control and went for a ride off the runway. All was well until the airplane went at an angle through a small drainage ditch. That finished off the lower longeron and a angled support tube. I have learned that the crack/ break is not a first, and some have switched to .049 walled tubing in this area.
Since the fabric is coming off for repairs, I am looking for improvements at the same time. The f/g seat has always been uncomfortable to me. Prior, I had considered removing it, and putting in a straight bench seat and use Oregon Aero seat cushions for comfort. Wondering what other have found. My son & I are both around 5'11 and fit should not be a problem. The other thing that I would like to do is to move the rudder pedals aft in order to raise the brake pedal portion to effect the correct brake geometry. Currently, the "shelf" of the firewall prevents adaquate pedal height.
Open to suggestions for improvements....

Avid seat optionsI had the tail area fail and need to rebuild that area. As part of the repair, I want to do something about the seats in my Mk1V. Currently it has the supplied fiberglass curved bench seat. I would like to improve on the comfort and are open to all suggestions.
Thanks,
