  1. Hey guys

I want to put similar side triangle windows on my Model C that is found on the Mark IVs .  I would appreciate a photo or two of what the installed window looks like close up. I understand my install may be different given mounting features.

    Thanks in advance !

    Philip

Phillip,  I wish I knew if late model Kitfox aluminum triangle windows would fit your C - They fit the early model 1-4 Kitfoxes too.  I have a new, unused, pair that I would sell for half of new price, whatever that is.  EDMO

    EDMO,

I'll take them if nobody else wants them.

Good - Can you check with Kitfox for a price for a pair with aluminum frames?  I am having terrible headaches and ringing in ears from radiation - Just don't feel like doing any more than I have to right now.  EDMO

  2. Yes sir but headed to Kauai Hawaii tomorrow for 6 days.

And I am sitting here in wet 40 degree weather and waiting for Spring to come about April 15 or later!  I am jealous, but hope you have a fun trip.  Thanks,  EDMO

  4. I believe that trying to do a W/B on a Kitfox 5 would not be accurate with it hanging by the wing pins:  1.  The pins are about 2"+ aft of the leading edge of the wings.  2.  The arm of the axles might be about 4" aft from leading edge, and this might be a huge miscalculation of moment?  3.  tail would have to be suspended with weight on the tail axle and the cable directly in line with the axle center.  Much easier and better to do W/B with scales.  BTW - How do you do a W/B with floats without amphib wheels?  EDMO

  5. Mark,  Thanks for the update on the honesty of the company - Hope you had enough money left to put some door photos on here.  Congrats on the completion.  EDMO

  6. I went BasicMED as soon as it was available last May.  I've had the same GP for 25 years and told him he had new powers now, which was the first he'd heard of it.  My 3rd class was expired for a couple of years since I didn't need it after trading my PA16 for a SkyRaider LSA, but I needed it back before I could start flying my Cozy last June. Timing was perfect for BasicMED coming on line for me.  The GP was cooperative, the process was easy, and my insurance covered the exam (whereas it would never cover the first class exam with an AME in the past).  Coincidentally I discovered in the hearing test portion that tinnitus had snuck up on me without me noticing but I'm very aware of it now.

How do they test for tinnitus?  I have had it most of my life, and lost some high and low tones in Radio work in Artillery unit in Army.  When I was a child, I had these "radio waves" going thru my head and was afraid to say anything because people might think I was going crazy, or something!  I had bad earaches until I was about 15.  I have had the sounds, on & off, most of my life - especially agitating when trying to go to sleep - I have them right now.  I worry about side effects from any possible drug treatments, since all drugs have side effects.  EDMO

The hearing test is a series of tones sent to one ear or the other of different frequencies and volumes, and you are asked to raise your left or right hand when you hear a tone in that ear.  My doctor didn't say I had tinnitus, he just said I had lost some hearing in a certain range of frequencies, something to monitor in the future.  But by doing the test I realized that with the headphones on and all sound blocked out, I had a light ringing in my ears that I hadn't noticed before, and it was difficult to hear tones in the range of the frequency of that ringing.

Thanks for the info - I don't need headphones to hear the high-pitched sound in my ears - I had hearing tests in a booth when I retired and know that there are high and low frequencies I don't hear.  One is the door alarm on our fridge - I cant hear it at all, but wife and daughter tell me that it works - fortunately, they also put a light on the door that I can see.  I know most of the aids for hearing impaired since I raised two impaired children, one partially deaf and the other totally deaf until she got a cochlear implant.  EDMO

  7. JB,  I am sure that Doug Holly can give you detailed info on getting a kit plane registered, but you do not have to be the "sole builder" to do that.  You need a bill of sale for the kit, some kind of documented information of how much, if any, has been done by other builders, (builder's logs and photos are best), and info if any part of it has been built by a commercial agency other than the original kit-maker, and your building logs and photos.  If the total "Amateur building" is at minimum 51% or greater, no matter how many "builders" were involved, then you should not have any problem registering it as the final builder/owner.

  9. JB,  There is a new owner of Avid Aircraft trying to get the business restarted.  This may take some time, but he is on this site and is gearing up to make kits and parts.  Just something for you to consider if cheaper building/buying/flying than current Kitfox is your desire.  Kitfox outsold Avid in the early days, but you will probably find more current active Avid flyers on here than Kitfox.  EDMO

  10. How long are the Matco axles you bought?  I see that they have 3 lengths of the 3/4 axles.  Were they same length as old Avid axles?  Are these for the Douglas wheels?

    Thanks,  EDMO

  11. More snow to you Jim!  Just keep it away from STL.  Waiting for Spring to get 75 degrees here.  Welcome home.  EDMO

  12. Mark,   How about renting or borrowing a big concrete saw with an abrasive blade to do the cutting with?  They cut thru some big rebars and bridge bolts with them.  EDMO

  13. I agree with Jim on this.  You need to have the wheels location nearly the same as original Avid gear or be faced with nose-over.

"Another thing to consider is where will the wheels end up with this gear.  If they are to far back, you might go over on your nose the first time you get on the brakes."  EDMO

  14. Are these gun drilled?

Wyonate,  I am butting in again, but I see that the axle to fuselage height is 14"+, and Avid / Kitfox gear is normally 22" to 24" for taildraggers, and 16" for nosedraggers - You might want to add about 8" or more under the fuselage to get more prop clearance and AOA for takeoff.   I used the 22" for my nosedragger.  That would make a nice footwell like the Airdale, or storage room too.  EDMO

  15. A photo of your mounting solution would be amazing btw. Thanks again!

I edited my post and added photo above - saying again, "Mine is a nosedragger".   The radius blocks are in Grove catalog, but I might have some depending on the width of the gear.  EDMO

  16. FWIW - I called Grove about using radius blocks and having them about 28 or 26" width compared to the 32" width of the Kitfox mounts and Robbie Grove told me that it wouldn't make enough difference to worry about.  I added another heavy crosstube about 10 or 12" ahead of where the strut attach tube was located (just under the vertical tubes on the longerons) and welded in some 3/4" x 2" wide rectangular tubes to attach the radius blocks.  Here is a photo.   Of course, mine is a nosedragger!   I would not put the gear flat against the fuselage as is shown in the above photos.  Hope this helps.  EDMO

  17. If you can return the Matco axles I have a set of new Kitfox axles for sale.  You know the price, but I don't without looking it up.  I can measure them to the nearest .001" if you need that.  EDMO

  18. Not even April Fool's day yet but this is definitely a joke.  Range of 100 km ???

    Larry Page's newest blunder:  https://cora.aero/

Wonder what he is smoking?  Sounds like blowing a lot of smoke!  Going to pollute your air too, Dusty!  And, what is the selling price of this Dream Machine?   EDMO

  19. Thanks Ed,I will keep working on it ,in the mean time its flying fine with the new wings and I know of one other aircraft flying with the same setup, just wont be packing out any moose :)

I would bet that Suberavid made the longer struts out of 1" x .049" or .058" wall.  EDMO

  20. Let me be the first to say congratulations Mr.!

Sincere thanks for time served and best wishes in your future endeavors.

Pretty exciting to retire so early with great benefits and still have more than half your life ahead of you.

    Oh yes, I am jealous!

    X2 !!!  EDMO

  21. Im sure its to late to removing existing plywood wing inserts and replace with a longer one now that the wings are cover and painted. .I am wishing I had done this when I did my wing extensions but never thought about it. Did think about extending the struts but wasn't sure about having all the rivet holes from the old location in the spar so in the end just left it alone ,

I think that Suberavid has new spars, so no holes to worry about.  If I had strut fittings already on the wings and wanted to make the struts longer I would leave the old spar fittings riveted in place and maybe just remove the outer part that connects to the struts.  Then you have to make sure you have an insert in place above the new fittings too.  EDMO

  22. I hope you get to feeling better.

The original pedal master cylinder bottoms were more of a slot and thinner.  The new master cylinders that were bought had a more round bottom and required the tabs to be further apart.

The plane hasn't been registered in almost five years and hasn't been flown in more than that.  The current owner is supposed to get ahold of the FAA to find out the best way to conduct the sale.  If it all works out, I will post pictures, but definitely going to be a bit of a project.

I have 4 of the MC4 that have the half-round bottoms.  I know that none of my pedals have the tabs for them.  EDMO

What are you wanting for the MC4 ?

Leni,  These have the hole in the rod end and not threaded for a fork.  Make me a PM offer if interested.  EDMO
