Also I would reinforce your rudder pedals. Those chrome one were prone to breaking right where the vertical piece comes up from the horizontal tube. I believe Kitfox issued an AD to fix those and the MK4 Avid had a strap across that piece.
Added:  Doug Holly had his rudder cable tube break from the upright tube - when you reinforce the uprights I suggest you do the same strapping around the vertical tube to the cable tube.   The chromed parts were not the only ones breaking.  EDMO

Good site TJay - If I could, or would, move up to snow country, you would be first on my list.
BTW:  On the SOBs who screw up country airstrips - There was a woman who had a house right next to the North final approach at one airport where I kept my planes - she took photos of every plane she thought flew too low on final and bitched constantly to FAA - Guess FAA and city finally got enough of it and used eminent domain to tear down her house and build a street through the property - Good move on their part!  ;<)  EDMO

There it goes again - Try to edit and the whole thing disappears - - I tried to add that years ago guys were pulling down on Cessna spinners to check the travel on the nose gear and were putting the spinners out of balance - Cessna made an AD with a big NO-NO!  EDMO

You don't need the one from Warp!  Measure around your bolt heads and order cheaper one from Spruce - I think it may be about 7" diameter?  EDMO

That is not a "Trailing Link" like is used on Cessnas, Pipers, ect.  Those "Castoring nosewheels" came out with Grumman planes - RV-A models now and Kitfox - my understanding is that some attach to engine mount and others to welded fittings on firewall.  Look on ebay / Barnstormers?  Better attachment for Avids was like spring-loaded one I just sold to ChrisB - No longer made.  EDMO

C of L has everything to do with C of G - but for instance, the Leading Edge extension of, say 4", does not change C of L that much when you divide the length of chord into equation - maybe 1/2 that much, or maybe it does move it forward that much?  I had this all figured at one time for nosedragger front engine, but Chemo has clouded brain right now - I also added about 6" more to flaps (from 9" flaperons to 15" flaps/ailerons) (Ailerons alone have to be about 10% of wing to work well) to do my figures - Maybe take two readings - one from original leading edge and one from new half of extension and compare them?  Sorry I cant help much now.  Where are the real Aero Engineers?  EDMO

  10. EDMO added a post in a topic Avid wide/ tall gear install from mark IV on c model

Weight is on the groundloop wheel - You may be right about toe-in?  (Too much deep-thinking for my Chemo brain right now!)  Either way, looks like straight - no toe, would be best?  I have no real experience with full groundloops - that's why I went Nosedragger when legs got unstable!      EDMO

I thought "Toe-Out" was a bad idea on Taildraggers?  Seem like most say it worsens groundloops - either no toe or slight toe-in mostly recommended?  EDMO

Joey,  Maybe it is ease of removal of spinner that concerns you for adjusting WD blades - skull cap is lots easier.  EDMO

  13. EDMO added a post in a topic Trim systems for model C

Kitfox 5 used a heavy electric servo to move the leading edge of the Horizontal Stabilizer for trim much like the Piper had a hand crank and chain - Your Avids and earlier Kitfoxes could be modified to use it.  I have an unused one I would take my original $300 for with plan drawings for it in manual.  I see these listed in Spruce now for about $700-$800.  EDMO

I would think the biggest concern on the spinner is how much it affects your coolant temperatures - drag differences may be minimal no matter which one you use, but probably less than without spinner.  EDMO

Not a lot of info on spinners - My Ercoupe had a skullcap spinner - Suberavid had one on his plane.  Guessing that they remove some of the turbulence from the prop inner portion?   EDMO

If you want to go with a Bowden cable controlled trim tab for the flaperons, it is easily done..  I copied mine off of another designer - but the the cable changes the trim tab automatically by the same amount of flaperons you apply.  It is attached to the flaperon control lever on one side.  This don't trim for cruise flight tho - bungee will do that.  But is it cheaper - maybe not with the cost of Bowden cables?  I have another trim tab that is electric for trimming in cruise, takeoff, landing, etc.  EDMO

Yes,  You are correct, the CG of taildragger has to be behind the mains - Nose dragger is in front of mains.  Weight of nosewheel should be between 8% and 15% of total GW, with 12% being about optimal.  Weight on tailwheel should be about 1/2 of that.  EDMO

I will have a Kitfox 1 copy fuselage and a rebuildable certificated Kitfox 3 for sale this spring, and only one set of gears - maybe if someone buys one or both of them they can use your gears?  EDMO

  22. EDMO added a post in a topic Engine Failure yesterday

I had thought about buying the $pensive (float type, I think) from Kitfox to go with my $pensive plastic header tank, but after hearing about others, I am undecided to go with it, or some other, or change to the larger type aluminum Avid header tanks (2 of them) and find another sensor.  Guess now I will let the final builder make those decisions.
I still like the Kitfox vent lines better than the Avid style - Kitfox vents back to the upper part of the wing tank from the header, and not into the open air stream, and can be used as a sight gage for the early tanks that don't have the sight gage lower fittings.  They don't need shutoff valves.   EDMO

  23. EDMO added a post in a topic Finally starting new hangar!

Thanks Mark.  That is luxury!  I've parked my birds in open shelters, wooden hangers, and uninsulated metal hangers - everything was too dirty, too hot, or too cold, sometimes too sweaty, wet and windy!  Now the City will only let me build a wood frame "Garage" that is a foundation percentage of the size of my house, (16' wide x 32' long) which means folding wings are mandatory, but I made the walls 13 feet tall with 12' x 12' bi-fold hinged doors with 6" insulation in them and have 6" stud walls with 6" FG insulation, and 10" FG insulation above ceiling in attic floor, all finished with drywall and painted, with electric heat - AC not connected yet, but it is the nicest one I have ever owned.  I can also park truck with overhead camper or a small motorhome in it.  I now have two fuselages hanging from the ceiling and another on the floor, two sets of wings on the wall and three sets of tailfeathers hanging from the balcony, a lathe and milling machine and other tools under the balcony, and still have room to work.  Congrats on yours,  EDMO

  24. EDMO added a post in a topic Nose Wheel Rigging

Added:  Dual steering rods might also take some of the strain off of the little rudder cables?  One of the problems I see with the Avid steerable nosegear is that it don't disconnect and stay straight when the weight is off of the nose, unlike the RANS or Cessnas - That means in a crosswind you might land with the nosewheel crooked by applying rudder which could cause a groundloop unless you keep the nose up until you can neutralize the pedals and let it down.   The Kitfox and RV castoring nosewheels don't have that problem either.    I agree with ChrisB, that nosewheels are mostly for parking level and better visibility on the ground.  I always liked the sound of my Cessna tailskid dragging the concrete!  ;<)  I would think that the MkIV elevator added to the earlier models would be a big help on this- Maybe VGs and sealing tapes too.  EDMO
