Thanks for sharing all of that, Doug.  The Basler pics are fascinating.  Maybe Larry should have had them do his wiring harness.  What an operation!

    Larry, PM sent.

You may not be able to get it perfect with the flaperons even when folded.  Mine are off just a bit.  It's more important to have it rigged right for flying.  It takes a little fiddling, but you should be able to arrive at a good compromise.

Minimum water temp for flight on a 582 per the Rotax Operator's manual is listed as 150 F. 115 is too low and I suspect your reading is way off. What kind of gauge are you using? The Westach quad gauges are notoriously innacurate, though more often with the EGT's. I had a Rotax water temp sensor go bad on me too. You could pull the sensor and calibrate against a thermometer in a hot water bath to see if you're in the ballpark or not.

If your temps really are that low, bad things could happen such as cold seizure, leading to piston scuffing.

The size of the lift struts is a key component along with the carry through.

Ed, my III came with 4 point Hooker belts which hold me in nice and snug.

Larry, if anyone else doesn't come up with a pic, I'll post one this week after I get out to my hangar.

Good job, Nick!  ...and all on 582 power.  Thanks for the pics and commentary.  You make it look easy.

The Hacman style is very effective and simple once it's installed.  I haven't had any issues with mine.

Is the Artic Sparrow system still available?

Good to hear you've saved another of our birds from oblivion.  Good Job!

Keep the Hacman system in mind if managing the EGT's ends up giving you the blues.  It's great just dialing in the EGT you want and not worrying about rejetting for changing conditions.

    Jon,
I had my 582 exhaust ceramic coated.  It ends up with a silvery metallic finish.  Though I don't have before/ after data, it does seem to move more heat out of the cowling.  It makes sense since nothing radiates heat better than a flat black surface (in this case inside the cowling).

I believe the firewall material is a form of Fiberfrax blanket, though I haven't found a source for the quilted type.  I have the same on my Model III.  It's a non-asbestos ceramic insulation.

Density of gasoline is about 0.7 gm/cc. Buna-N rubber is 1.2 to 1.3. The balls will sink.

I run the enrichers on my 582. Came with the kit as well as a primer. I decided I didn't want the tygon fuel tubing in the cockpit and the enrichers seem to work fine for me.

Keep motoring Larry!  You're making great progress.  The fabric and panel are looking great.  Def going to fly this year if you keep it up.

I thought minimum for T/O was 150 on a 582. He must not have installed a thermostat.

Mine is currently tucked up against the belly. It gets up to 180 on a climb and usually settles to around 170.

I tried heat, Goo Gone and mineral spirits.  None made it easy.  In the end, my stubborn determination got it off, but I probably would have been better served buying a new piece.

Well, that's a bit of Fox sensationalism, Mr.

Here's a link to balanced coverage of what's going on with the FCC and Congress at the moment: http://www.politico.com//story/2015/02/reality-check-on-net-neutrality-rhetoric-115460.html

I for one, thinnk the monopolistic ISP's like Comcast and AT&T have too much power and don't represent consumerrs in the least. I'm a believer that they need to be treated like a utility just like my electricity or gas supplier.

    KF III near Minneapolis
I ran across a Craigslist ad for a 582 powered Kitfox Model III in Hudson, WI. I have no personal knowledge of this plane or the seller. Looks like it has a little recently repaired wingtip damage on one side.

How about this one?  Pretty similar, but easier mounting with the supplied nut and gasket.  You have to be careful to get the correct sex on the pins for each half and make sure you get the solder cup version.  Available from Digi-Key or Mouser.

Thanks for the link and filling in part of my education.  I was surprised their online configurator had so many flavors of KF's and Avids.  I like that you can get an idea on configuration and pricing after filling a couple of dropdown choices.  Are they adding a Kitfox Rotax Zipper in your honor?
