I'm up for the weenie roast at Larry's Camp Chapter 75 if we can agree on the best time.  I'll be there from Monday for most of the week and can help setup/ cook / whatever.  Monday or Tuesday evening?

  2. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic 582 radiator cap PSI

The OP was referring to a 582 installation.  The referenced links I believe apply to a 912.  The Rotax installation manual for the 582 calls out the 13 psi(g) pressure cap (section 11.3.4).  Also, in the operating manual, the max operating water temperature is stated to be 175°F and minimum for takeoff is 150°F.

Ms. Muffet's sure an attractive gal.  I like the short format and the iPhone did a great job.  Kind of a pain to download the file to watch though.  Do you have a button to upload to YouTube?

Thanks for all the great photos and writeup, Randy.  You're quite the photographer and that territory is stunningly beautiful.  You're a lucky guy to have that in your backyard.

  5. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Prop slipping on Rotax 582 w/ C gearbox?

Taper tip, or square?  The square tips are known to have a pretty high moment, especially if they have the metal leading edge.  I believe that's why the taper tips exist.

What prop are you using?  The thumbnail looks like a three blade of some type.  I'm wondering if it has a high moment of inertia, making your situation difficult.

    Hi Luke,
You'll want to look at the brake pedal / master cylinder geometry.  I believe the setup you have provides poor mechanical advantage and the brakes will be ineffective.  Have a look at the Matco Manufacturing website.  They should have some engineering data on how to set up your master cylinders.  http://www.matcomfg.com/

Yo, we can handle it in Chicago.  We haven't even had a snowfall above 12" so far this year.  I think we're still talking about the Mason-Dixon line here.

What do you all think of the HACman mod? I feel like it would need something like that as I move around a lot and plan to be back out in the western states, i.e. high altitude flying, again in the next couple years. I miss the mountains too much!

    Kenneth,
I'm flying with the HacMan system and am very happy with it.  I was having a bear of a time keeping my EGT's in check.  After I installed the system and got the right main jets installed, I can just dial in the optimum EGT and know my mixture is perfect.  The other advantage is I haven't had to do seasonal adjustment of needle clip position or main jets.

Good luck if you end up making an offer.

I used the same thermostat and had to buy the Rotax gasket for something like $30 (grrrr).

I did drill the little hole and align it at the top during installation to help purge out air when filling the system with coolant.

Where is the kit located?  Got any pics of the components and work to date?

Here's one from Galt Airport's (10C) annual flour bombing contest.  All onlookers (biped and bovine alike) seem to enjoy it.  My kids and I didn't win, but had a great time.

  15. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic RK400 Clutch Install

After I installed my clutch I had to reduce the idle jets to .45 to get it to idle worth a darn.  I probably would have been better off with one size smaller yet.

  17. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic To the Apple fanboys: how you liking your iOS 7 upgrade?

I've updated two iPhones and two iPads to IOS7.  It's the smoothest upgrade yet for me.  One iPhone was done through iTunes (needed to upgrade that first).  The others were done "over the air" (OTA).  All went smoothly but took some time.

The only battery life issue I had was some apps were set up to update in the background which I didn't need them to be doing.  After I disabled this in the settings, all is good.

One minor bug I've noticed is while muted, the keyboard still makes some key click noises.

All in all, I really like the upgrade.  Most important, Foreflight runs well with it.

Well I was going to go with my Model III but vibration issues (still unresolved) caused me to scrub a week before the event.  Looks like I would have been weathered out anyway due to the crap weather that nailed Colorado.  One of the East coast guys made is as far as Cheyenne, WY before he had to call it quits and fly commercial back home.

I'm afraid you're probably going to need the HacMan to control your mixture and EGT's.  Before I put mine on I had a choice of too little throttle or too much.  It's very uncomfortable seeing the EGT's hitting the stratosphere.  You'll get used to pitching up to load the prop before reducing throttle too.  Kind of tough flying the pattern while keeping EGT's in check.

  20. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic 582 High Vibration

Next chapter in running down my vibration problem: I've now installed nice new throttle cables and done a pneumatic sync.  It's not perfect, but it balances nicely between carbs at 5800 RPM which is my reference for prop balancing.

I tried it with the Dynavibe and got the same bad results I had previously.  With my two blade 70" IVO ground adjust, at 3200 RPM the phase angle on the Dynavibe wanders around and never settles.  At 5800 RPM I get a steadier phase reading but the IPS reading is a little over 2.0!  I switched out the 70" IVO blades for a new to me set of 72" blades.  The tracking and pitch on these blades are very close as is their weight.  Still the same results.  I did apply some test weights to counter the readings I was getting but didn't see improvement.

So...I guess it's gearbox rebuild time.  I review the Mike Stratman articles on the CPS site regarding the C gearbox but didn't learn much of use.  I've looked at the C gearbox exploded diagram and I don't find any belleville washers or other thrust washers to replace.  All I see are roller bearings and ball bearings plus some shims.  My inclination is to have it done by LEAF since I don't have the fixtures or special tools it seems to require.

Before I pull it apart and take it in for a rebuild, does anyone have any ideas on how to check for bad C gearbox bearings?  If I pull forward or back on the blade tips I can't detect any play.

  22. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic I need a new EMS... GRT2000EIS... MGL Velocity E1 or... ???

I can read my display in all conditions.  I don't really look at the graphics either.  The only knock I have is that the display alternates between my two EGT's.  It's hard to keep track of which one might be giving a high or low reading between the mag and pto.  I've got them placarded, but it doesn't register in my mind without focusing on them.  I agree that the red alarm LED does get my attention.

My vote is for the E-1.  It's been ultra reliable for me.

BTW, EGT's are almost certainly K-type thermocouples.

If you need a little hand holding on the electrical stuff, hit me up.  My install went smoothly.

I had bad luck with my quad gauge and switched over to a MGL E-1.  I've been very happy with it.  It's a solid performer.

Careful to fully flush out the new pump.  I've heard of one case that put a Kitfox down due to manufacturing debris in a new pump.  Might consider adding a temporary filter downstream of the pump and a serious ground runup before flying.
