Raising the skylightI didn't want to rob nates thread so I'm starting this one here.
Randy could you put up some pics of raising your skylight specifically how you faired it back down into the wings. I'm thinking of just building new butt ribs that are higher on the top and flat on the bottom with a completely open hole to view the fuel sight tubes through. if you were to do it again would you keep the changed dimensions you have or add/remove some of the height? also how you made the turtle deck attach would be great as well?
I've been having thoughts of making a carbon fiber transition piece that goes across above the front carry through tube that would have the two compound bends molded into it, this would allow for easily attaching a clear windshield to the front and a darker skylight to the rear and eliminate the bends in the windshield so hopefully they would last longer. has anyone done this yet?...thoughts?...pics?

If weight is not a factor either way I would think that the aluminum would be more durable. however if you already have a fabric wing you will treat it as such in use/storage and this shouldn't be a concern and you will probably already have enough covering materials left over to cover these as well so you may save some money to put back in the gas tank. guess i didn't help huh

Very nice!! I really like your paint job. I see you have a raised skylight. how much is it raised and what is used to fair it back down into the wings? i've been thinking of building new butt ribs to raise mine. any pics would be awesome Good luck getting signed off with the floats.

are you looking to buy a specific plane or to build these wings? my kit came with the speed wing but i built it on HH spars to HH specs just used the speed wing rib profile except for the first 3' which was higher to accommodate the HH wing tanks.

Ok I think we finally agreed on a design, I finally won the yellow I wanted from the beginning and we are going to go with the smaller N# per all of your advise, I also want to have "Avid Flyer" on the cowl here is a pic of what we have in mind. Im' thinking of painting white then yellow and using vinyl for the black accents, We just finished setting up the paint booth today 36'x12' with ventilation fans on one end and air inlet on the other, planning to start spraying ekofill friday morning

another option if you're concerned would be to just remove the ethanol from the gas its not that difficult to do just a takes a little time

KISS KISS I like it, I'm using a portable car port frame covered in clear plastic so I can just hang it from the frame, Did you have any problems with the wing wanting to sway or move around?

Wing stands for perminant wingtips ?I'm trying to figure out how to stand my wings on edge for painting but not to sure how to do it. I've seen the typical wing stands that attach at the spars but I have the original fixed avid tips so no way to attach them to the tip end. so far I'm thinking about using the standard stand on the root end and using something to hold on by the lift strut brackets. possibly using the actual lift strut or hang the lift strut bracket from a rope? just curious what others have done with these types of wings. pics would be great

Joey good point about using the small numbers, my wife really likes the 12" on the side of the fuselage though (she even wants it on the wing but i already said NO to that" we don't however have the farm fields etc to land in around here to make anyone mad. I live in Gods country. either there is no place to land or if there is your pretty much good to go and nobody really cares anyway.
Av8r- thanks for the NNumbers.com link they have just what I want and I know it will be to FAA specs and lots of options as far as colors styles shadowing etc.
We are currently looking at doing a paint scheme similar to the factory KF 7 but with red and white being our primary colors. I was looking into graphics as a way to just paint the plane white and apply vinyl so I would not have to worry about each side looking like the other, the only "pattern" work iv'e ever done on a large scale is camo which is obviously not matching from one side to the next. need to decide soon as im hoping to start spraying on the 5th!!!

Contacted stewarts and Jason was very helpful he is going to set me up with just a pint of glue, as for painting you are supposed to start each coat 10 min after starting the one before it. then light sand for the second color after the first has set up of course. what is the best type of tape for masking I've used the blue painters tape on other projects but it always seems to bleed a bit, was thinking about the green frog tape, any suggestions?

Vinyl graphics and N numbersanyone have a good source for vinyl graphics and N numbers for our birds? still trying to decide what I want to do but hope to start spraying paint real soon so I need to decide.
