I just got a message from Ed this evening.  He didn't see that I had called for a few days. He said some of the tumors have shrunk, but he still feels lousy.  Seems that he is heading in the right direction, and he said to tell you all that "he's not gone yet"  Was very nice to get that message from him.  JImChuk

I really don't know how much use was on those pumps on the plane.  I went and looked on ebay, and there all kinds of them there with free shipping besides.  Probably the cheapest ones are Chinese knock offs, so buyer beware.  The real facets are about 50 new I think.  JImChuk

You also might get into the area of control reversal.  That is the reason for the stop bolt.  So I would say it's a bad idea.  :-)  JImChuk

I meant to show you what I used for leveling my strip when you picked up the plane.  It's about 26' long.  Pulled it with the tractor and raised or lowered the blade with the hydrolics on the hitch.  Used a long truck frame.  JImChuk

Sorry, I forgot to get pictures and such of the fuel pumps and gascolator.  I'll try to remember tomorrow.  I don't have a gascolator in my Avid, never did in the over 500 hrs I've flown it.  JImChuk

Steve, what you are describing is usually called the header tank, although it does act as a gascolator.  The one on the A model is a standard style aircraft gascolator similar to this.  I can get pictures of it and the facet fuel pumps later today.  I'll have to check on the pump pressures.  JImChuk

Thank you for the kind words TJay.  As far as the parts left, there are 2 props,  both LH,  a 64" three bade IVO, and a two blade 66"  Powerfin  electric fuel pumps, gascolator, controls, (mixer, joystick, rudder pedals)  tail feathers, and stuff like that.  Instruments as well.  Dual CHT,  EGT,  senders for them.  I think both were new last August, ASI, (only goes to 80)   Props are both in real good shape.  Probably should put the stuff on ebay.  That usually works good for smaller stuff.  If anything is of interest to anyone, let me know.  JImChuk

Ya, they're gone.  I shipped both motors off today as well, so now she has got back a bit over the price of the 65 Hirth bought last August.  Got some smaller parts, and 2 props, so maybe get $1000 more if we are lucky.  Oh well, if I wasn't helping her, she wouldn't have gotten half of it.   JImChuk

There should be a piece of leather between the two plates on the flap lever and where it attaches.  Tighten up the bolt that holds it all together, until it stays in place while in flight, but is still able to be moved.  Some guys have notches, but I never found it was needed.  JImChuk

Don't know what to tell you on the brakes, I think you are right about smaller cylinders giving more pressure.  More travel on the pedal also, but it's really a matter of leverage.  I'm picking up a Kitfox 3 project on Friday that has a new mount for the 582.  I'm sure it's the same as would go on a Kitfox 4.  I won't be using the 582 so the mount will probably go up for sale.  JImChuk
PS  If you look at the engine in the picture I posted, you see the mounting locations for your new style of mount on the sides of the engine directly below the ends of the exhaust manifold.  I sure wouldn't go drilling any holes in the engine without having the mount right there with me.  I can't imagine that the holes are in the wrong spot, unless someone built the mount wrong.  Was the mount made by Kitfox?  I'm sure they know what they were doing.

I called him today, but had to leave a message as no one answered.  I should have tried a bit earlier this evening as well, but now it's probably getting to late.  JImChuk

I don't think that piece of piece of fin tube radiation will do very much.  It's used in hot water house heating systems.  But then I've been wrong before.  The Kitfox belly radiator will cool the 100 HP 912 engines by itself.  JImChuk

  19. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic 912 aftermarket ignition

There were some problems in the ignition, and the owner recommended changing everything out to who ever got it.  I did some pricing on Rotax ignition parts and,  well you know what I mean there.  This whole unit cost about what one of the cheaper Rotax modules does.  If it was ok, and reliable, it would give a completely different, separate redundant ignition.  They also say in the add that it makes spark at any RPM, so it probably would start even if the battery is low?  Also ignition is retarded for starting and can be adjusted with the control box.  I really don't know if it's good or not, I was hoping someone else had some first hand information on it.  JImChuk

I could maybe see going with one Rotax and one of these.  That gives spare parts for the Rotax if anything goes bad from the other Rotax ignition, and would protect against having the battery go dead and the aftermarket ignition with it if one went with 2 sets of the aftermarket stuff.  Maybe, maybe.  The US guy got back to me today, and this is what he said.  Hi Jim,

The CPI for the Rotax 912 would be $810US without plug wire kit, $892 with plus shipping. The New Zealand  guy offered a 20% discount and free shipping.  Just a bit higher than the US guy.
Then the next question  is are these dependable?  Anyone have any experience with them?  Or am I going to have to be the ginny pig? JImChuk

I wouldn't be a bit surprised they would swap.  I actually was thinking about them myself, but you spoke up first so go ahead.  On my Kitfox 1, the brake leverage is way better than my Avid MK IV was.  Had very good brakes on the Kitfox 1, and not so good on the Avid.  Get the overall lengths and compare.  I'm sure the tubing is the same diameter.  JImChuk

Thanks for the reply Larry.  I was trying to price out all the parts one would need if he changed out everything, and wow!  It got to be a lot of money pretty quick.  Then I went and found the unit I posted about that apparently replaces everything that Rotax put on for ignition.  Well for one side anyway.  It does take a battery to run it however.  Turns out that the SprintAero people are selling this system      www.sdsefi.com/cpi.htm      which is actually made here in the states.  I emailed Sprintaero, and the guy got right back to me.  Offered me free shipping, a discounted price and then told me where they got them from.  If you think about messages on the "other" site, maybe you can come up with the reason for my interest in this topic. :-)  JImChuk

Which part are you looking at for the $800 price?  I was just looking in my LEAF catalog, and see the SMD modules are 1227 each.  If I understand it correctly, there are 4 coils at $372 each.  4 pole trigger coil assembly was $853, ect ect, ect.  Wish there was more info about that Sprintaero setup.  I'm not really sure if it completely takes the place of one 912 ignition or not.  Or what powers it for that matter.  Maybe I need to look more on their site.  JImChuk

    912 aftermarket ignition
Does anyone have any experience with this topic?  I did find this aftermarket by looking on line.  In US dollars it's $1192.  I see it does one ignition, not dual ignition at that price.  Any thoughts?  JImChuk
