Don't think Ed has a 912,  I was the one who posted the last pictures of a 912.  It's not up and running yet, I figure if I need an oil cooler, I will mount it.  I have several.  With my Jabiru engine, I would take it off in the winter, and just run it in the summer.  JImChuk

Ed, the starter is there, it's black, and right below the carb in the third (I think) picture.  It's kind of hid by the ring mount which is also black.  JImChuk

I have cheater lenses in my welding helmet and torch googles.  They help, but I'm still not very good at cutting and welding. ;-)  The bifocals are a real pain to work with, especially with welding.  End up with a sore neck trying to lean your head back and look out the bottom of the bifocal.  JImChuk

I didn't get around to mounting the radiator yet.  At first I was just going to use the standard Kitfox radiator mounted just in front of the landing gear on the belly of the plane.  Another idea I had was using a radiator mounted on the front of the engine.  I'm not  a fan of the big round cowl on the Kitfoxes and so I had picked up an Avid MK IV cowl that was set up for a 912 engine.  It had the opening for the radiator under the prop.  That project is on hold for the time being, and I'll get back to it eventually.  Hopefully next summer.  I think the last picture shows how the Avid cowl comes up short in front of the doors on the Kitfox 4.  Maybe Avid kept the engine further back than what Kitfox did.   JImChuk

I should have gone and looked at my Kitfox 4 with 912 project before I started posting on this subject.  Now granted, it's not on an Avid, and Kitfoxes don't have quite as much of an issue with nose heaviness.  Here is what I had forgot when I looked at my Kitfox 4.   My mount does use a ring mount.  It was actually a Kitfox 5 mount that a guy remodeled to fit a Kitfox 4.  Looks like firewall to face of prop flange is 28 3/4"  Distance from firewall to back of ring mount is 6 1/2".  Tubing is 1/2" diameter, don't know the wall thickness.  Oil tank is mounted on side of engine, which is better for not having oil run down into the engine when it sits for a long time and filling up the bottom of the engine with oil.  It does stick out to where I may have to put a small bulge into the cowl to cover it.  That's ok with me though.  Anyway, if I can help answer any questions, fire away.  JImChuk

    headset speaker impediance question
Hi guys,  I ran across this post from another site, and wonder if anyone else has a comment on it.  I was going to get the transformer to wire one up, I have the male plug and ordered a female plug to build one.  I know I have to run my Vertex Standard up near full volume to use hear it very well, even though I now have a fairly good Lightspeed headset.  Any thoughts?  JImChuk

With the rebuild of my Avid MK IV, I built the new firewall for several reasons.  Changed it to stainless from galvanized steel, got rid of a bunch of patches and holes in the wrong place, being that it originally had a 582 engine before I changed to the Jabiru.  At least now, I'm starting with a clean slate so to speak.  Other things to think about with how far forward the engine is, room for carbs and airfilters?  Where are you planning to put the oil tank?  I'm sure you've thought about those things, but I'm mentioning questions that would come to my mind if I was doing this.  JImChuk

Pick up the torch, put down the glass Leni.  You'll get there!  ;-)  Still think if someone would give you a dimention from firewall to face of prop hub, it would help to start off in the right place.   Although, relooking at the pictures with the starter touching the firewall, that  should locate things as well.  I'm guessing that the further back you can keep the engine, the better for the CG.  JImChuk

  9. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic 670 Rotax Needs rebuild SOLD, SOLD,SOLD

I believe all Rotax engines have pressed cranks.  The right shop can rebuild them, although I don't think Rotax approves that.  Rotax does make tons of money selling parts however, so that has to factor in.  I had the shop I take my engines to rebuild a Cuyuna 2 stroke crank for me with no issues.  They replaced the main bearings for about $100.  I know that Steve Beaty at Airscrew Performance can rebuild Rotax cranks.  Not sure what he charges though.  JImChuk

This heater was very adequate on a 30 degree day.  I cut some 6" stove pipe for the body of the shroud.  3/8" copper tubing at the ends to keep the shroud away from the muffler which makes room for the air to travel around the shroud and up to the outlets.  It's also easy to bend around in a circle  and close off the ends of the shroud.   JImChuk

Forgot to mention how I controlled the heat into the cockpit.  I have little doors with spring loaded hinges on them that are either open or closed. If it got to warm on a flight, (ya right, it is northern Mn) I could open on of the window vents.  JImChuk

I looked on my PC for the picture of how I ran a scoop off the back of the radiator to the muffler shroud, and didn't find one.  I did find an old post about heaters and found my picture there.  JImChuk

I never used just the radiator for heat.  Can't really say how well it would work, but the colder it is and the more you need heat, the harder time it will be for the water to be hot.  I did make a muffler shroud on the 582 muffler that put out lots of heat.  Especially after I put a scoop onto the back of one of the radiators to force air through the muffler shroud.  These pics are before I added the scoop on the radiator.  Also had to mount the muffler different, hung it off the firewall.  JImChuk

I don't think we have a photo shop in town anymore.  I see lots of cheap filters on ebay, which one should I get if I can't find a photo shop?  Thanks, JImChuk

I can't add anything to help on this Leni, other than to say that perhaps someone who has a 912 in their Avid could get you the measurement from the prop hub to the firewall.  Also pictures if they have them would help.  JImChuk

    Go pro clone lens filter
Hi all,  I have one of those cheap go pro clones on order, and am thinking I want one of those filters that will remove the propeller  from the video.  Not sure what they are called.   Any help?  Thanks,  JImChuk

If you get knocked out in the water, you could very easily drown.   If I had no other choice, I suppose I would hope to find some half grown bushy spruce/evergreen trees.  Smaller branches and hopefully a softer landing.  JImChuk

Make a good jib that you can use over and over.  Maybe you can build and sell them if any one else needs a 912 mount for an Avid Flyer.  :-)  We need parts suppliers for these Avids, especially the more complicated parts.   Are you using the ring mount system for the engine side?  JImChuk

I forgot to look at the Kitfox 4 912 mounts I have.  I think they are 1/2" tube, but don't know what the wall thickness is.  I'll try to remember tomorrow.  JImChuk

Leni,  I called the guy up with the MGL engine monitor, and he said it didn't power up when he tried to do it.  Wonder why he didn't at least let me know that.  I guess neither of us will get it.  Hard to beat that British price for the new one though.  That is if it comes......  Back to having tailwinds with the cat and the thrown track.  Just under an hour and I was back in gear.  Took another hour to fix the blown seal in the track tensioner, but it's fixed now.  Snapped a few pics as I went along.  JImChuk

I believe the main jet mostly controls the full throttle operation.  Perhaps you can go to a richer (larger sized) needle jet.  That and the jet needle give you mid range fuel mixture setting.  JImChuk

Not always tailwinds, first pic is my cat yesterday after knocking down a bunch of 2 - 3" poplar trees/brush alongside the new part of the runway.  I had finished up, backed around about 90 degrees, when I went forward to head home, I thought the left side clutch hung up cause the way the cat pulled to one side.  I even pulled the clutch lever and let it snap forward to release.  Then I happened to look at the track, but of course by then it was way to late.  Never have spun one this far off.  Looks like the O ring in the track tensioner let go just then and I didn't notice the track get loose.  It blows that O ring every once in a while, and I usually am always glancing at the tracks to see if they go loose.  I do have a front end loader, that should help to lift and pull the track around.  Sure could use a second person though.  On another note, I put the 2 blade warp back on the Kitfox 1 today, and it performs considerably better than the IVO.  Climb out was better, and speed at cruise better also.  Just not near as smooth as the IVOs though.  Leni, haven't heard from the guy with the MGL engine monitor, he was supposed to send me pictures of it yesterday.  Maybe he still will.  My English one is on the way according to the tracking #.   Had a friend stop by this afternoon in his Wilga.  Boy is that thing loud.  If I took the muffler off the D6 and was pushing for all it was worth at full throttle, I think it would sound a lot like the Wilga.  Neat though anyway.
