Speaking about welding stainless steel, and from someone who knows very little about welding, and ain't afraid to admit it ;-)  Just for the fun of it once I brazed a couple of pieces of SS together.  I don't know what type of SS it was, It came from a SS kick plate off a door.  I was surprised how well it held.  Never used it on anything, but maybe could in the future??  Any thoughts Leni?  JImChuk

  3. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Avid wing tips needed

looks like your trailing edge aluminum has a kink in it.  I tried to find a picture yesterday that showed an uncovered wing so you could see what it looks like if you don't already know.  It will be a bit of a bear to fix it without opening up the wing, but if you had an inspection cover near the tip, maybe you could slide in a brace back there to tighten up the trailing edge, and glue it in place.  Maybe even slide a piece of aluminum into the trailing edge piece to hold it straight up and down at the kink as well.  Tough to work through an inspection cover though.  Otherwise bite the bullet, peel the finish tape off using MEK and work your way down through the fabric layers.  Once you have the trailing edge exposed, you could perhaps glue another one over it, then reglue the fabric and tapes in place, then repaint.  This picture is after the wing is covered, but you can see the pieces in place.  The fiberglass tip ends at the rear spar, and an aluminum tube finishes out the end of the wing, and the trailing edge attaches to it.  JImChuk

The seat truss is a good thing to reinforce as well.  Many of these have bent in a "not that hard" of a landing.  Lot of guys have infilled under the doors to strengthen for landing gear loads as well.  JImChuk

Nice buck Doug!  Our season ended today.  They are safe from me though,  wife doesn't like the meat, and I wont kill them just for the fun of it.  Allthough when they are all over the field when I'm trying to land, I would be tempted to take a few shots.  You must have not had any wind with that snow.  Nice and flat on the top.  Ours was drifts all over the place.  Field was pretty good though, especially after I drug it with the snowmobile and home made drag.  JImChuk

Ya, I'd stay off the lakes myself.  It actually got down to +4 F last night.  (love that global warming) The way it's going, they will be froze soon.  I seen one report from Cass county of 25" of snow.  I think they got the most.  JImChuk

Actually it rained most of Thursday night, and finally got cold enough to turn to snow early in the morning.  It was wet and sloppy underneath  the snow.  Ended up using my front end loader and then cleaned up with the pickup cause the pickup didn't want to do it.  I'll have a mess in the spring.   Did you get anything in Wi.?  JImChuk

    hard core winter lover..??
Well, yesterday I turned 65, and I got a nice present from mother nature.  We had 18" of snow up here in northern Mn.  I plowed today, and ended up packing the runway with the snowmobile.  Will put the skis on the plane tomorrow.  That will be the earliest ever.  Looked through my logbook, and I see 11-27 as the earliest one before this.  Some others were 12-5, 12-9, 12-21, 12-27, 12-29.   Some of those times were where there was just a bit to much snow for wheels and barely enough for skis, but this time there is plenty for skis.  At least I will get some ski flying in before I head south.  This wasn't the biggest or earliest storm we ever had up here, I remember in 1991 we had the Halloween storm, 10-31, and it dropped about 30" of snow on us.  Well I'll enjoy? it while I can.  JImChuk

To get a pretty good idea if the prop is adjusted right for flight, you would do a static run up.  Tie the plane off and see what maximum RPM is at full throttle.  6250 is about right with a 3 blade IVO.  If you didn't have enough pitch in the prop, and fly with it, you could burn up the engine.  2 stroke engines need to be loaded to the proper amount or else the EGT temps will go too high and melt a piston.   Then it get's quiet, and you can look at one or two blades of the prop that aren't all blurry.  (cause they're stopped)  What is your static RPM now?  JImChuk

  13. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Insurance requirments

No doubt you're right, I think if you are operating off a remote grass strip, the worry of issues is reduced, and especially in a single seat aircraft.  I know back when we were flying ultralights, none of us had insurance.  I was just curious though, and so I asked.  Now if you're hand propping your plane at a busy airport, and it gets away from you and runs into that nice new Lear jet, it's going to be a different story even if no one got hurt.  :-)  JImChuk

    Insurance requirments
Hi all,  I'm trying to figure out what Alabama and Florida  require for insurance on an airplane.  Mn requires liability, and I don't think Wisconsin requires any.  What about your state?  JImChuk

I'm sure you're right Joey, he isn't doing all that work just for the fun of it.  I imagine he also is trying to get maximum performance out of the engine.  Would that be 140 HP?  I imagine 110HP in a 650 lb. KItfox 4 would be as much as I would want to handle, and maybe more.   If the Honda exhaust would work even with a somewhat reduced HP, it might not be that bad a way to go.  Not many people with Steve's skill at building an exhaust system.  Certainly not me!  :-)  JImChuk

Been thinking some more, and not sure if this makes sense or not, but I'll throw it out for you all to think about.  Could a hydrolic lifter partially bust up and have pieces show up that look like this?  I would think you would hear a lifter ticking at the very least, but maybe not??   I don't know, just trying to make sense of this.  JImChuk

I'm surprised how nice the Honda pipes seem to fit on the engine.  If they are the right size pipes, I would think that would be the way to go.  Way less work than building your own.  And probably not to hard to find either.  JImChuk

It does look a bit like the keeper at least from the end.  Looks thin like a washer though also.  Easy to pull the valve covers and look.  Maybe you will luck out afterall  JImChuk

Hi Ed,  It looks to me that the plane is located in Illinois.  Closer to you.  Maybe you should buy it yourself.  Doesn't look like much to fix it up.  You could fly it while you finish your other one.  JImChuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Electric trim??

I can see some function in the spring.  Suppose the cable breaks while in flight, the spring should then hopefully be strong enough to pull the tab against the stop and keep it from flopping in the breeze like mine did.  If the stop is in the right place, your trim may then be set up for landing.  I still say go with the heavier cable and make sure the bolt can pivot.  JImChuk

I say break out the wrenches, maybe it's not that bad.  One can always hope.  And there's really no other way to know.  Have to pull the engine off to make a jig for the other mount like Leni was talking about anyway.  It might not take very long to get this Subaru back into running condition.  Make the jig for the Yamaha before you tear it apart.  Worst case you haul the remains to the scrap yard, best case you're back flying again while you finish up everything you need to do with the Yamaha.  JImChuk

The largest piece looks to me like some sort of washer with outer and perhaps inner rib.  Never had a Subaru apart, so I have no idea if there is anything inside that looks like that.  I would think if a valve keeper let go, they would have heard and felt the piston hitting the valve just before they started to glide down for the landing.   JImChuk

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Electric trim??

I have a similar cable on my MK IV, and have never had a problem with it.  Flew the plane about 450 hrs.  I really didn't use the trim much though.  I would set it for hands off cruise and pretty much leave it there.  Never used it on landing.  Stick forces are pretty light I think.  I didn't have the spring on mine though.  That would put more pressure on your cable in the push mode.  Couple of other thoughts,  try the heavier cable, it shouldn't bend so easy. Aircraft Spruce sells both.  The other thing is that the bolt the cable attaches to has to pivot freely or the cable will want to bend.  I do know one other thing about these trim tabs.  If the cable or push pull arm (as in the case of the electric trim) comes undone, you will get a lot of flopping around of the elevator.  Fortunatly when it happened to me, (with electric trim)  I was just taking off, and was able to limp around the pattern at slow speed and get it back on the ground.  If it had happened at high speed, it could very well have got ugly.  JImChuk

Not sure if you know this trick Ed, but on lots of ebay adds if you put the little arrow (using the mouse) on the picture, it will show an enlarged box of the picture that you can move around and magnify different parts of the picture.  If you left click on the box, the whole picture will expand.  Then on either side of the picture you will have arrows that will move to the next picture if you click on that arrow.  There were 12 pictures total in that add by the way.  JImChuk
