If it isn't there, it can't quit.  If you run mechanical, and electric pump plus the fuel pressure regulator, you have that many more things that can fail.  Champs, Chiefs, Cubs and who knows what other planes flew just fine on good old gravity.  Obviously different planes require different equiptment, but if you can do without it you are probably better off.  Everybody has to do what they are comfortable with.  And some of us will get into trouble for doing just that.  ;-)  JImChuk
PS  tx_swordguy,  what kind of airplane were you flying that had the problems you describe?  If an Avid or Kitfox, you really should have the ram air tubes on the wing tank covers, and they NEED TO POINT FORWARD.

Problem with the mechanical pump on the Jabiru, is sometimes it can overpower the float needle valve and flood the engine.  I had an engine out that way once.  I'm looking at my old pictures TJay, and I think my fuel line came out where yours did.  I just turned it down and hooked it to the carb when I got rid of my fuel pump.  My fuel valve was right next to the throttle, and went pretty much straight forward and through the firewall.  JImChuk

I like it.  I like it a lot!  Did you see it start to lift the tail off the ground?  Sure sounds nice.  Bet it made you feel good when the car and truck went by real slow. :-)  JIm Chuk

Do you have an Avid Magnum manual?  I thought the mixer controls on the Magnum were way different then the earlier Avids.   I'm trying to figure out what I'm looking at in your pictures, and it doesn't look like my Avids or early Kitfoxes.  Maybe if you are using directions from a different design???  That could cause problems I would think.  Then again, maybe I'm all wet.  (I did just get back from the beach)  JImChuk

  8. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic designing your own plane?

If you mean FAA wise, I don't think they would stop you.  Lots of one off planes built or at least started.  I guess I would try to use a fuselage that would bring those parts you like together.  (sounds like a Kitfox fuselage to me)   Either a prebuilt one or a copy of it with the changes you need or want.  My thinking and thoughts are like this.  I'm not that much of a designer, or structural engineer, so if it  worked fine in the past, why not use it again cause it's already been tested..   Just my random thoughts,  Worth what they cost you.  :-)   JImChuk

Yes, and no.  Here is what the FAA says.  These are when an ELT is not required.  Other wise it is.   JImChuk

I believe the original glue used in making the ribs is T-88 epoxy.  It's a real good glue for wood.  I wouldn't hesitate to use the Hysol though, it holds the wood ribs to the aluminum spars, so it should hold  the wood to the wood.  I've used it that way myself.  The reason for the microballoons mixed into the hysol for glueing on the strut brackets is to keep the dissimilar metals from touching each other.  That will stop them from corroding like they would if they were able to touch. Microballoons are small fiberglass spheres that will keep the metals away from each other while still allowing a glue joint.    As far as wash out, I'm not sure how much is best, but the tanks have a certain amount of twist built into them, so I think they will begin to stick out above the spars if you don't have enough wash out in the wings.   Edit:  yes,  cotton flox is a thickener so the hysol doesn't sag or run out of a glue joint.  It takes hours for the hysol to harden, and its slightly runny when mixed without the flox.  JImChuk

  16. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Trailering a Avid

The trailer hitch that you could get for an Avid or Kitfox mounted onto the cross tubes in the rear of the fuselage.  With that hitch, all of the weight of the tail end of the plane was supported by the cross tube that I used to support the tail of the plane in my pictures above.  That is how the plane was designed, so I'm not surprised to have no damage when I hauled these planes like I did.  No doubt, having a softer suspension in the trailer helps to smooth out the bumps as well.   Probably the factory hitch had some flex in it also.  I have never used the hitch myself so I can't say for sure.  JImChuk

I've hauled several Avids long distances with the tail supported like I did on this Kitfox 4.  I hauled it up from Texas to northern Mn.  No damage on any of them.  Probably over 3000 miles on all of the trips.  JImChuk

  18. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Plans for skis

A friend of mine had a set of waterskis that he used on his Avid A model.  One ski broke right in front of the attachment bracket when he hit an ice ridge as he was taxing along.   And not going very fast either.   IVO prop hit the ice, and committed suicide.   Meanwhile, I had landed in another part of the lake, and taxied into some slush.  Busted a piece of the trailing edge off my prop when a bunch of slush hit it.  Kind of an expensive day for both of us.   Had to get a trailer and snowmobile  to get them off the ice.  I think I got home about 11 PM.  Personally I wouldn't use waterskis.  (and don't taxi into slush either)  JImChuk

I like the look of the fuel tank.  Why couldn't Avid and Kitfox gone this way?  I'm guessing the tanks could have been at least 11 gallons if they took up 2 bays.  How are these held in place?  Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread.   Nice looking kit by the way.  To bad I have way to many projects already.  JImChuk

I couldn't get Leni's links to open, but did get Aviator Sed's to work.  His is the second to the last post.  This is the manual I have and referred to in my previous posts.

If you look at page 116 of the manual he links to, you will find the info on shimming the gearbox.  JImChuk

I know that info is in my large Rotax repair manual.  Problem is, that manual is 1500 miles from me.  Maybe someone else has a copy and can scan a page or two and post it.   There was also a section on the C gearbox in CPS's proper care and feeding of the Rotax engine, although I'm not finding that particular section online either. Don't remember if that article discusses the shimming though.  JImChuk

I guess I will ask why you had the gearbox apart?  If you only took it off the engine to do engine work, and now are just reinstalling it, you maybe don't need to measure it.  If it was good before you took it off, it should be still good now, I think.  JImChuk
