Avid had one of their owners make a forced landing when the fuel pump quit working.  After that they recommended using the ram air tubes on the fuel tanks.  Supposedly, it gave enough pressure to run a 582 after going though a nonworking fuel pump.  I would use the tubes myself.  I just was looking on the net to see if I could find how flow rates increase with pressure.  Didn't really find anything I could understand.  Something related though, calabrating an ASI with a water column.  According to what I found, 100 MPH equaled about 5" of water column.  Not sure what that relates to in pressure, but Avid thought the tubes were a help.....Hope I didn't wander to far off topic. :-)  JImChuk

To make a well in sand, you get a bunch of water in a tank, and pump it down the pipe and sand point you are trying to push into the ground.  When you are pushing water into the ground, it kind of liquefies the soil, and the pipe can be pushed down fairly easy.  You are kind of turning the soil into quicksand.  JImChuk

I have about 20' of pipe with a sand point buried in the back yard from when I tried to drill a well.  I was driving it down though.  We have lots of clay and rock up here so it didn't go very well.  It was an experience though.  If one has sand, you can pump water down the pipe and push the pipe and sand point  down fairly easy.  Never tried it myself but I don't doubt it works.  If you burn out the drill, I have a couple of 3/4" drills that I don't need. Also have some old electric drill/impact wrenches. They are as big as the 3/4" drills, handles are about 2' long.  They must have a lot of power, the sockets fit big truck lug nuts.  Never used them though.  Just some more junk I acquired.  Hope it works for you.  And hope you don't spend to much time on it.  I want to hear that the Kitfox is flying.  I flew mine for a while this evening.   JImChuk

Poly fiber says to use an epoxy, and just as the epoxy is getting tacky, shoot the poly tone.  They also sell enamel that is supposed to match poly tone colors.  JImChuk

I do like separate valves on each tank myself.  If a guy had a low level warning light on his header tank, he would get a warning that he was about to have trouble.  At that point, it would be easy to switch over to the other tank if it still has some fuel in it.   JImChuk
PS  not to hijack this thread, but does anyone have a good idea for a low fuel level warning with the standard Avid Flyer header tank?

I can say one thing about the Kitfox 4 wing.  It is definatly a faster wing than the undercambered ones.  The Kitfox 4 I flew in out of Pennsecola with a 503 clipped right along.  At least as fast if not faster than the Avid with way less HP.  JImChuk

  7. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic MK IV wingtip repair guidance/suggestions?

I thought that the wingtip was actually bent up near the back.  Looked like that to me in the video.  Like what would happen if the 1" tube that comes out of the rear spar was bent.  That was why I thought the wing would need to be opened up.  Did I see that wrong?   JImChuk

On your speed wing ribs, there is a wide piece of plywood where it meets the wing fabric.  I repaired a standard STOL rib tail once by adding a 1/4" scab on each side of the rib.  It held up for hundreds of hours.  The last message in the post I'm linking to has a few pics of what I did.  That could be a way to fix the rib.  Here are a some ideas if you pull the wing apart.  I think you will need to do that to fix the wingtip.  http://www.avidfoxflyers.com/index.php?/topic/3373-broken-rib-tail-repair/ JImChuk

This one seems to be a bit better price.  If you do ebay.   The CPS catalog says it's the same as the SP 2703 but with a chrome cover.  Leslie,  I reread your posts this morning and got what you were trying to say.  Sorry I blew up.  JImChuk
PS  I measured the one I show in the picture, and it is 8 1/2" long, 3 3/4" wide and 3" tall.  (that would be with it laying on it's back chrome cover)  If you measure from the end of the carb, it would stick out about 2 1/4" further

Well If you are right Ed, then I will gladly say I'm sorry for seeing things the wrong way and my comment reflecting that.  Now that I read your comment, I maybe see what you mean.  That is one of the problems with computers that probably doesn't show up in face to face conversations.  When you are talking, it's easy to say "what do you mean by that" and get an immediate answer and it becomes clear. Not always that way on the PC.  I always try to put a :-) in if I'm kidding, just so the other people know I was kidding.  JImChuk

I was just trying to show you that all that matters is that the expansion tank be higher than the radiator and that it didn't matter on what side of the radiator it was.  Sorry that I wasn't able to help.  I will keep my thoughts to myself in the future.  JImChuk

I think the only reason for the expansion being show how it is in the pictures is the way they draw the radiator.  Better to have the expansion tank above the high point of the radiator to get the air out.  Same thing applies with the vent from the water pump to the expansion tank.  It helps to get the air out of the engine so you don't have steam pockets develop.  On the MK IV, the expansion tank ends up between the two radiators.  But that makes it the high point so air can come out.  JImChuk

Not according to my memory.  I switched from a 532 to a 582 on my first Avid and think I had to change out the westach tach.  But then again, my dad got alshimers.  Might run in the family.  JImChuk

I think most people's ears are good enough that they could tell that they had a bad ignition without looking at the tach.  Flown several 2 strokes with a Tiny tach that just read one side.  Another thing, most 532s had points ignition, while the 582 had electronic ignition.  532 makes one spark per rev, 582 makes 2 sparks per rev.  There for, a different tach is required for each engine.  JImChuk

Got the actual Russell part # for these fittings, and ordered them on ebay.  About 1/3 less price, and free shipping.  Thanks again for the info.  JImChuk

    The Jabiru runs
Well I fired up the old Jabiru today after about 5 1/2 years.  I had Jabiru USA go through it a few years ago and it's been waiting for me to get the Avid MK IV back in shape to hang it on the front.  I wanted to make sure my wiring was ok before I got things to covered up with glare shield and windshield and such.  Good thing, I had to make a few changes already.  Still have to program the MGL E1 engine monitor.  Getting readings, but they don't seem right.  I feel good hearing the engine though.  It's not as quiet as the video shows though ;-)  Don't know what happened to the sound.  Ran nice and smooth.  I had pulled it through with the choke on about 8 blades, and when I hit the starter, it was running in about 1 revolution.  Anyway, I'm happy.  JImChuk

Thanks TJay.  That will help a bunch.  I've seen where some worried about drilling out the holes in the adaptor sandwich to the larger sized fitting.  Not much material left.   Did that worry you, or did it look ok?  (Got the Jabiru running today)  JImChuk

TJay, can you tell me what you used  and where you got them for fittings and sizes of fittings and hoses?  You probably saw my post on the Jabiru engine group about the oil cooler adaptor.  I just put a temporary loop of hose on for now.   I was about ready to start my engine yesterday, but had something wired wrong going to the ignition switch.  Thanks,  JImChuk

Leni, I never saw the plane that was brazed together.  I talked to the guy and he said it was brazed.  As in brass color if I remember right.  :-)  Ed,  just looking at the ribs without the tails again, they kind of don't look like Avid or Kitfox ribs to me.    Wonder how the trailing edge is made on them.  On the Avid, the bottom cap strip reaches all the way to the top cap strip, on the Kitfox, the bottom cap strip stops about 2" short of there but it's aimed at the same point.  If this doesn't make sense the way I'm saying it, I can get some pics of my Kitfox ribs, here is a pic or one of the rib tails I made for the Avid wings.  JImChuk

TJay, the piece going down into the can is only about 5/16" in diameter. At best I could only drill it out to 1/4".   The tube coming out of the engine is 3/8" ID.  Big difference, almost twice the volume can go through a 3/8" opening as compared to a 1/4" one.   To each his own, but I'm not sure I like the idea of the oil going back into the engine.  Some real nasty stuff ends up in that bottle.  My engine didn't really go through a lot of oil anyway.  My breather line does go up as high as it can between the engine vent and the catchbottle, that saves some of the oil from getting to the can as well.  That all being said, I'm not really familiar with how the Motion Aero separator works.  I'll look into it.  For now, I have the old bottle mounted and it will stay where it is.   JImChuk
