I would also suggest running the plane tied off at say 5500 rpm for a couple of minutes, shut it down with the key without changing the throttle, and then have a look at the spark plugs.  They are more accurate at telling the egts than a gauge.  Reason for not backing off to idle is you want to see what the plugs look like in midrange, not at idle.  It does seem though that maybe 1 more degree of pitch will get you where you want to be.  JImChuk

I also have a sigtronics intercom, I have it mounted in the instrument panel.  My 7" tablet with the Avare GPS sits right on top of the intercom.  Cords do kind of get in the way, but I live with it.  Things weren't completely done when this pic was taken.  Still aren't yet for that matter.   JImChuk

I've put a thin washer under the needle snap ring when I wanted it richer, but not as much as one more notch would do.  Worked fine for me.  JImChuk

Dusty,  if your gear legs get wider when you back up the plane, that sounds like you have a toed in condition.  Most seem to think neutral or slightly toed out is preferable to toed in.  Easier ground handling.... JImChuk

I would use the 3/8" shock cord that I linked to on the Aircraft Spruce site.  Here is a link to Steve Winder's explanation on how to install the bungees.  It works good, although, I also put marks halfway between the 13" marks.  That way both people (top and bottom) have a mark to pull to.  I've flown my Avid MK IV lots of times at the gross weight of 1150 with the 7 wraps of 3/8" shock cord.  Obviously, the black cord you used isn't near as strong as the shock cord.  JImChuk

PS  incase my link doesn't work, here is a bunch of posts on bungees with the same link in it.

Are you really using shock cord?  Not the bungee stuff you can find in some hardware stores.  This is the stuff you should be using.  http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/shockcord.php   JImChuk

    Time for skis?
This was my view out the front window this morning here in balmy northern Mn.  I better finish up installing the plow on the pickup..... Last year I flew on skis on Nov. 20.  Earliest ever.  Wonder about this year.....  Total accumulation today expected to be 7".   JImChuk

Take a look at the leading edge catalog, page 19.  Look at part # H7286 for the fitting, and H7285 for the grommet.  Can probably find the hose at the local hardware store.  On the left side of the page, click on the lowest item, fuel pumps, tanks, and supplies.  That will take you to page 19.  JImChuk

  12. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic 2 Magnum center ribs needed

You could add a third false rib instead of just two like in the other spaces to keep the fabric from dipping in so much between the ribs once it's tightened.  JImChuk
PS  I thought I had posted this a half hour ago.  I guess I didn't hit the submit reply button.....

  13. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Another Wing Spar Question

Others have mentioned sanding out the scratches with finer sandpaper.  I tend to agree with that approach.  My Avid manual says to use 360 grit.  Also, just one other thought, does a crack start to appear if there is no flexing?  I would guess not.  I think these spars with the internal web are stiffer than the standard round tube with a stiffener slid in.  JImChuk

  14. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic 2 Magnum center ribs needed

What is the spacing on the rest of the ribs?  All the lighter weight Avids had ribs on 18" centers.  The Heavy hauler was at 12".  Kitfox uses 18" on all their planes as far as I know, and they go up to 1550 gross weight.  Putting in the false ribs would be lots easier than adding a complete rib and having to take the wing tip off.  Food for thought..... 16. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Step 2, Build Magnum!!

Day before yesterday, I ran the Avid up into the front yard to wash is up.  It's a bit of a slope, and it sure was nice to be able to apply the parking brake so it didn't start to roll away on me like it used to when I got out.  I also use it if I want to leave it idle to warm up a bit.  I guess some ounces are worth more than others.  :-)  JImChuk

I'm sure it only added 1/2 a lb or less, but it does add up.  What's the old saying? even a ton of feathers weights 2000 lbs.  JImChuk

With a 582, your CG would probably end up near the front of the envelope.  With the heavier? engine even more so.  I would make a provision for mounting the battery as far back in the tail as you can.  JImChuk

Maybe you did it and I didn't notice, but on the Avid I rebuilt, I installed a parking brake into the brake lines.  I will do it on the next plane as well.  Works nice.  JImChuk

If you like the radio otherwise, get a 12 volt charger.  I'm sure Icom sells them.  Maybe one of these from ebay will work as well.  I have a Sporty's SP 200 in my Kitfox 1 that I run off of ship's power, and a Vertex Standard doing the same in my Avid MK IV.  I like a Vertex Standard Pro V VXA-220.  They are a good price and work good as well.  JImChuk

  22. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Tail wheel weight?

On the average Avid, the empty weight on the tailwheel when you are doing your CG calculations is probably between 45 and 60 lbs.  If my memory is correct, my MK IV came in at 53 lbs.  Distance for tailwheel back behind the leading edge of wing (datum) is 145.75" if I remember right.  Full empty weight was 602 lbs.  Fuel moment is 15", passengers is 16".  Main wheels were 3/4" in front of the datum.  Gross weight for the plane is 1150.  I think that would be enough info to figure what the tailwheel weight would be at various weights.  Brain doesn't want to focus that hard right now to give an example.  :-)  No drinks involved, just tired.  ;-)  JImChuk
Thought a bit about it, and woke up a bit so I played with some numbers.  Still don't have the tailwheel weight at a higher given weight, but here are some more #.  If my memory is correct, my main gear weight is 549 lb.  Moment is -- 412  (3/4" in front of datum) tailwheel weight is 53 lb.  moment is 7725  (145 3/4" behind datum)  total moment is 7725 -  412 = 7313.   Empty weight is 602, giving an empty weight CG of 12.14"   If you add 150 lbs of fuel, moment is 15 x 150 = 2250.  398 lbs of people, moment is 398 x 16" = 6368  Total weight is then 1150 lb, total moment is 15931 which gives a CG of 13.85"  Now, who is the math wizard that can tell the tail wheel weight at the 1150 lb total weight.  I know it's easy to calculate if you know the right formula and such.  Right now it escapes me.

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic repairs and mods to the Avid

I have the plane just ouside the door of the house, cause I just washed it.  Easy to run out and measure like that.  The elevator tube is 1/2" OD.  Trouble is getting it out of the plane.  It's one long tube all the way back to the elevator.  The Kitfox used a shorter steel tube, and then a long aluminum tube.  I think Avid just had a thick slug welded into the end of the tube, and the threaded rod was welded into that slug.  Maybe one could cut the last 1/4" off the tube, make a plug that would slide into the 1/2" tube with a threaded rod coming out of the plug.  Weld the top of the plug to the 1/2" rod plus a few rosette welds and I don't think it could go anywhere.  All the while being careful not to start the plane on fire.  JImChuk

  25. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Wider gear options for the IV

I built a laminated wood spring gear one time for an ultralight.  I made a mock fuselage and tested the gear on that.  It was set up so the wheels landed on steel plates that sat on round rods, so they could move outwards.  The gear cracked when I dropped it.  I hated to see it break, but I was glad I tried it that way first.  Plane was still good, and I gave up on the idea of a wood gear.  Dropping will give a good idea of straight up forces, a trailer type test will for front to back forces.  Keep at it!  I like it.  JImChuk
