The CG envelope for the Avid Flyer is 11.185"  to 16.5" measured from the leading edge of the wing.  Avids do tend to   be a bit nose heavy.  If your plane is an exact copy of the Avid, that should be your numbers to shoot for.  JImChuk

Hanging the plane from eyebolts as you mention sure would work fine to suspend the plane.  Straps around the motor mount would also work.  That's how the AnPs did it with lots of planes where I used to take my Avid for it's conditional inspections.  I had some nylon rope straps that went around the front lift strut where it meets the wing and then went up over the wing.  I put some padding under the rope to protect the paint finish.  Worked fine.  The tail was sitting on a shop stool, and then a block of wood.  I do have a rope hung from the ceiling that goes over the tail of the plane with a hook on the bottom end of the rope , sometimes if I want the plane sitting level, I lift the tail by hand, and hook the rope to one of the hand holds on the side of the fuselage.    For doing the weight and balance, I would still go with scales, best is if you can borrow some stock car racing guys scales, they are super accurate.  JImChuk

  3. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Skis installed

The plane is hung from the ceiling with a couple of cable come a longs.  No magic, just physics. :-)  For just changing back and forth from wheels to skis, I have a 2x4 that is long enough to fit up against the bottom of the axels on both sides.  2 small blocks of wood on each end make saddles that cradle the axel so it doesn't want to slip off.  Then a small hydraulic floor jack goes under the 2x4 about 8" in from the wheel.   That positions the jack far enough away from the wheel or ski so there is room for it.  Works good,  although it probably wouldn't with the Avid factory skis as they mount on to the inner end of the axels as well.  This time I had to make up limiter cables on this new set of skis, so I needed to be able to put the right amount of nose up and nose down in the cables while the plane was in it's flying attitude.  JImChuk

    Skis installed
Hi all,  I finally got around to finishing the limiter cables and getting the Avid MK IV ready to get back in the air.  Now if we can have a late spring, I'll get some ski flying in.  We did get at least 6" of snow today, on top of the 16" or so that was there after the recent melts.  Bandit, I'll try to get those pics you wanted tomorrow....  JImChuk

Bummer!  And 2 years younger than me.  I talked to him a year ago about an HKS mount and several other times as well.  Seemed like a nice guy.  JImChuk

Great bunch of info. Thanks for posting it up.  Last fall I knew of where an RX1 and an Apex motor were, each was priced at $1500.  Don't know if they are still available.  Will be interesting to see how these engines work out over the next few years.  JImChuk

  7. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Poly Fiber Cleaners and Solvents Substitutes

I've been using lacquer thinner for the thinner with the polyfiber products, (still use MEK to thin poly tac though)  and have had good results in the last couple of covering jobs.  I was told by the paint shop that the 105 gun cleaner was really just lacquer thinner.  One thing I did find out though, is don't use the blue painter's masking tape with the lacquer thinner.  3M makes a green colored tape that is not bothered by the lacquer thinner.  With the blue tape, the glue started to come off the tape when I pulled the tape, and it was a real pain to get it off the paint.  The green tape worked fine, but should also be removed as soon as possible.  JImChuk

Buckchop,  I found the Kitfox 3 muffler I have, and it looks like the one in your picture.  I didn't compare it to my Kitfox 1, would have had to pull the cowl, but I think it's the same.  Here are some pics.  JImChuk

Most are home made I believe.  Polycarbonite can be bent in a brake without breaking it.  NOT plexiglass though.  JImChuk

  14. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Kitfox 1 exhaust needed

I was just looking at your first picture, and see how your muffler has been cut, turned and welded back together.  I found a picture of my Kitfox 1 showing the muffler, and it's made the same way.  I believe Kitfox modified the rotax mufflers to fit in the cowl.  I have a Kitfox 3 muffler somewhere, I'll have to take a look at it.  I don't think the one shown in the link will work in the Kitfox.  Avids are different because for one thing, the engine is inverted instead of spark plugs up.  JImChuk

  16. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Grove gear needed

Another thing to consider is where will the wheels end up with this gear.  If they are to far back, you might go over on your nose the first time you get on the brakes.  I don't think you can use a Kitfox grove gear on an Avid for this reason.  If you are still building, you probably can order from grove and get the gear in time to put it on the plane before you are really ready to fly.  JImChuk

It's pretty close to the 582 that was in it before.  I'm at 1500' MSL, and would usually see 1000 fpm. or close to it on the VSI when solo.   Of course, a lot depends on the prop.  Cruise speeds are better with the Jabiru.  Everything else being equal, I think the 912 Rotax is a better engine, but when the Jabiru works, it's not to bad.  I would choose it before the 582.  JImChuk

Just to clairify, the 2.58 ratio is used on the B gearbox.  The 2.62 ratio is used on the C box.  IVO told me to use a 68" three blade on the 2.58.  Was the 912 Kool prop in a pusher configuration?  Otherwise it's backwards to the 582 if both are used in tractor configuration.  I believe Joey ran a 70" 2 blade Warp with the 2.62 ratio and had good performance with it.  I have a 2 blade taper tip 70" on my Kitfox 1 with the 2.58 ratio, and it performs real good.  Not as smooth as the 3 blade IVO was though, but outperforms it.  With my first Avid, I had a powerfin 3 blade, and after trying it, I went back to the IVO.  JImChuk

Wow, Bandit,  small world sometimes.  I wish I had got to know Ron better.  The little time I spent  with him made me think he was a decent guy all around.,  When I met him, he had an Avid Magnum almost completed.  Don't know what happened to it though.   JImChuk

Ask what the serial # of the engine is.  Before around 450 is not real good.  Early engines had cooling issues.  Early solid lifter engines were good.  From somewhere around 450 to about 1900.  Then they went to hydrolic lifters and had some issues with these engines.  Earliest engines had fewer fins on the head as well as aluminum rods.  Both were fixed on later engines.  I've put about 450 hrs on serial # 903.  Good engine so far.  It was made in 2001, so maybe yours is new enough to not be a real early one.  With these serial #, I'm talking about the 2200 CC engine.   JImChuk
PS  here is a link to the FAA registration on the plane if you haven't looked at it already.
