  1. Do the flaperons themselves require balancing like most primary flight control's on faster aircraft do?  Are the counterbalances adjustable in either position or weight? Or is it a non issue on the Foxes?

  2. Ouch, that's pricey.  I agree, probably not worth the extra 10hp. And I would be a little concerned about keeping the 11:1 cool and the chance of detonation if you got some bad or in mislabeled fuel.

Thanks for posting this conversion, very cool!

  3. More info:

Darn thing weighs 625lbs empty!  Kitfox's website claims an average empty of 460lbs.  I understand the grove gear, wheel pants, and wing tanks add weight but 165lbs worth?  Is Kitfox lying about this average 460lbs empty, or is this thing just an overweight pig?  Or is it a little of both?

I thought a day VFR, 912 powered model 3 was more like 550lbs empty.  This thing has a 582!  Am I way off on my assumptions?

  4. It is a great buy, but I'm about $5k short right now and on the other side of the country.  I'm also more interested in a project, looking forward to a build.

That is a project Joshua.  An entire new fuel system including tanks.  Some sort of panel that will work with all the restricted airspace around here,  and would you like the more modern spring gear?  A few thousand here and a few thousand there....pretty soon you're talking about real money.

Yes, yes, and yes.  You're right.  If that Fox were near and could talk him down to $15k I would probably borrow some money from myself (I know that sounds weird, but everything is allocated/ear marked) and go buy it.  I think I could rebuild it into my dream Fox for another $10k or less and a year or two of work.  Not bad.

I think its good practice for us to discuss such scenarios.  It will help to identify a good deal, and hopefully prevent a bad purchase, or at least minimize it.

    Thanks for all the input!

  5. I wouldn't sell it any less than 17000, it costs a lot of money to build these things.

I know it does, but you'd probably be sitting on it for long time.  And that's fine if its worth it to you.  Like a buddy of mine who is in financial trouble is trying to sell a cherried out street chopper.  He has nearly $20k in it, and can't sell it for $8k.  It cost him a lot, but its customized to his liking and the market simply won't bare it.  So instead of lowering the price and paying off his outrageous debts, he pulled it off the markemarket and said "well I'm not going to give it away"!  And his financial crisis continues...

It might sound sinister, but I'm thankful for people that pay retail for new crap then turns around and sells it at half their cost, only way I can afford my dirt bike, truck, and eventual airplane. Tightwad, and darn proud of it (squeak squeak squeak)!

  6. Need an airstair or rope ladder to get in, aren't  ya?

Why did you choose a fixed pitch two blade over the popular three blade ground adjustable props?  Weight?  Efficiency?

  7. What happened with the plan for a "home made wide body mod" you mentioned on the fist page of this thread?  Did I miss that, or did you decide its not worth the effort?

  8. I'm 6' 210lb, my dad is 6'2" 220lb so cabin space is pretty important.

I've seen KF4 projects (not very often though) in similar condition for similar price.  Maybe I'll just continue waiting patiently for the KF4 that I envision.

Any thoughts on this kit?  I really would like a KF3 or KF4, but this appears to be the equivalent of a KF4 with KF3 wings.

Where can I find a 912 mount for this aircraft?

Where can I find a windshield?

The gentleman selling says the new tanks are ethanol resistant, and from the pictures they show wheels/tires included.  No fabric.  Anything else I should be concerned about?  I don't think its worth $9100, but it says OBO and he clearly mentioned "make me on offer" on the phone.

    Any input greatly appreciated.

  10. I backed out.  Nice guy, and based on information provided its a good deal for someone wanting an S5 and not a light sport compliant aircraft.

Its the wrong airframe/engine combo for what I want, and the fact it cannot be an LSA makes the deal unacceptable to me at this time.  The search continues...

  11. Under 700#?  Wow, I thought they started at 750 if you were lucky.  I will have to add the model V to my short list.

I'd say most are 800# +.  But look how they are built:  IFR panels, autopilot, air, tilt, cruise, power windows and Dolby surround...

Keep it real and 700 should be doable.   My yellow plane is 650, and I am hoping for 675 for the Mangy.

You're right.  I don't want more than the most basic panel to fly day VFR, I'd be willing to fly naked if I thought it would improve performance!

  12. I called the seller, and now I'm running the numbers on a new set of wings, gear, covering, engine inspection, prop, and misc. other stuff.  This might be for me if he's flexible on the price.  Both wings are shot as well as the struts.

Does anyone know off the top of their heads if the KF-VII wing kit includes the lift struts?

  13. 80hp in a model V here in the Mountain West is a little pathetic, right?  I suppose you could get the zipper big bore to boost the high altitude performance.

I'm just excited there is a Kitfox project within 10 hours of my location!  But that not reason enough to wrecklessly spend money.  Maybe if he comes down to $5k or so, then I can pick up the engine and avionics for another airframe.
