  1. wypaul added a post in a topic Sea Foam in wing tanks OK?

Ok I know better but here goes, interesting that the inspector managed to get the facts wrong. The correct ratio is more like 1:320 for MMO to fuel which is 4 oz to ten gallons of fuel. That amount of MMO will not noticeably color the fuel so how much was added?  Also interesting that he was able to give an exact formula for MMO without saying how that was derived but did not actually test the fuel for the amount of anything in the fuel let a lone MMO.  Did MMO actually cause the issue, maybe, but sounds like human error to me.  Did someone add 1 gallon of MMO to eleven gallons of fuel and would that cause detonation?  The facts are lacking in this report to be able to draw any conclusion if the proper use of MMO is of value, IMHO.  Maybe that was red raspberry syrup in the fuel tank, there is no way of telling from that report, because the fuel was not tested.  To bad the investigation was not handled better.

    Latest project
Test flying another Back Country Super Cub that I helped to complete.  They are great airplanes but really the Avid is more fun to fly.  This one is headed to Idaho after I get the hours flown off.  Maybe I will get to deliver it via all of the Bc strips, yah right! Did I mention it has an Auto Pilot? Oh well to each there own. G3x and G5 backup for the panel.

You remove the cam on the outside of the assembly by removing the two small screws. That is what releases the wheel.

The earlier 912's used 100mm and the later ones use a 4" bolt pattern which is 101.6mm.  I do have a 72" Ivo with the 100 mm bolt pattern that will work with an 80 HP 912 for sale send me a message if anyone is interested.

I do not believe that is a Maul tailwheel Randy.  I would just drill the hole to 7/16 and build a spacer to fit the spring to the tailwheel.  I did just that for a friend by cutting the top out of a piece of 1 1/2" 1/8" walled tubing making a U channel for the spring to set into.

    Oil tank
Latest mod to my MK IV was moving the oil tank up under the right side of the cowling.  It almost fit but I did have to make a couple of holes. The oil cap and the ring that holds the lid on needed some extra room   Right now I can simply remove the cap to check the oil but will probably put a couple of bumps and an oil door but we will see.  I will try to get a couple of pix today.  It is clamped with a mount to the engine mount.  The downside is that it is very tight clearing the valve covers by only a 1/4-3/8" .  It does come off in less than a minute so it will not be to bad.  The old location is scheduled to become a compartment to handle tools tie downs and the other things freeing up some room in the baggage area .  Also threw in a new 912ULS while I was at it and moved the oil cooler back behind the radiator on a purpose built mount and plenum.  The oil temperature comes up in about half the time and I pickup about, you guessed, it 5 mph.  Hoping to get some Orotex to try on the gear legs to pick back up some more speed. I know it is Oratex but Orotex fits it better with the price of that stuff.

I have been doing some thinking about slats also but a friend of mine that has them on his S7 thinks that without more HP they would not do that much.  He has his 912 pumped up to 140 HP.  Bruce is the owner of Back Country Super Cubs so he has a lot of experience with slats but none with the Avid.  He could be wrong but for the amount of work and expense involved I have been somewhat dissuaded, but the thought lingers.  It sure is fun flying the BCSC with them and the 35" tires!.  You can drop them in like a bomb.  The one I flew most had the Dodge gear, can't think what he call it but it does have lots of travel for sure but the 35" Bushwheels absorb a lot of the impact.

  24. wypaul added a post in a topic Which wheels/brakes to use?

I've mentioned before that the 3/4" axles from Matco are great.  They are hollow so lighter and the darn things just don't bend.  Must be some kind of heat treatment in play with them.  Really, the fuselage will break and the axles will be straight.
