  1. On the G5, were there no additional components needed for installation?

The Garmin G5X is self contained but you can add to it for additional features.  By itself for $1250 it gives AS, GS, ALT, VSI, AHI, TC, Skid Slip, GPS direction. For this you only need to hook up power and ground wires, and the pitot, and static port hoses.

Thanks, when I first dismissed it I was under the impression it needed added components.

Any chance you looked at the uAvonix 30 also? Seems it's the same price with a built in battery, round and has a built in angle of attack.

  2. 109jb, I use foreflight when I'm flying IFR and I dont have any issues with it in that regard and attached to the stratux it has worked well for me. I am looking into the ADAHRS interfaces, I would keep primary AS, Alti and turn coordinator as backups.

If you are looking for a moving map for navigation then I would say it depends.  When I was flying IFR regularly, the IPad with ForeFlight was really the only choice. That was several years ago though and now I don't fly IFR at all and I use a cheap Android tablet with Avare and Flight Plan Go.  I lean toward Avare because I have found that FltPlanGo can be sluggish at times but could be due to my use of an ultra-cheap  tablet.  Avare works great, but has some quirks. Once figured out all is good though and for any kind of VFR flight I find it perfectly adequate. Even for some IFR I would be OK with it.  Both can be paired with a Stratux or similar for in-flight traffic and weather. Both are free which is a major factor in my choosing them right now, but even though free they can do the job.

If you were really talking about an EFIS to replace flight instruments, I would say that it would not be my first choice to use a tablet. On a VFR Kitfox/Avid it would not be bad though because  a little practice should get a competent pilot to where they could fly the airplane without any instruments.  Having said that, on my project airplane I will be putting in a Garmin G5X which is $1250 but includes everything flight instrument related, can be connected to an autopilot down the road and can also be interfaced with the nav stuff too.

One of the main reasons I say I would not do a tablet EFIS is because in order to have airspeed and altitude that is not GPS based you have to have something that takes the pitot and static info and then in turn talks to the tablet.  This is usually done using a ADAHRS system and I have yet to see an ADAHRS like this for less that what the self contained G5X costs.

As mentioned the other option would something like the MGL stuff.

Hey Randy, forgot to tell you that moose sausage was fantastic!

I'll look into the MGL offerings, I was interested in adding the iPad interface with an Airdata computer and leaving the primary instruments as backups. Itll be a little ways out before I can make it happen so I'm trying to do all the research now while I can.

    Hi John,

I am probably the least qualified to discuss this but I would not depend on an IPad for anything that I really needed.  My first one would just randomly kick out of ForeFlight whenever it decided to do so, and then could take minutes to reconnect to the Garmin Glo.  The one I have now seems to be better, but I like having instruments that are connected, dedicated and I have never had any reliability problems with.  The new digital instruments are very light and perform multiple functions.  I like simplicity for a basic VFR plane like mine and I have the MGL E-1, FL-1 and a couple others for volt/amps and some other engine monitoring.  They are very simple to scan and provide all the engine and flight info plus a bunch of other stuff like fuel flow, fuel level, time/distance remaining, TAS, density altitude, hobbs, maint. timer, OAT, parameter setting and warning lights, etc, etc,

  3. Looking into shedding some weight and upgrading avionics a little.

Is anyone running one of the Tablet EFIS systems? If so, which one and how do you like it?

  4. The wrong area of the house for me to make any offers. Now if you were in the garage I might make an offer on the coyote.;)

I sold the Avid, not gonna sell the coyote or the amphib.  Household good are all for sale, no more airplanes for sale hahahaha

At least she isn't going far and you can come visit/fly her anytime you want while I'm at work!

  5. Hey John,

Welcome aboard and glad to have you coming to Wolf Lake.  PM me when you get a chance and we can get together to go fly.  Mine is a slightly enlarged fuselage than an Avid MKIV but still flies very similar so you can get an idea what they are like if you haven't had a chance to fly in one.  It will be great to have a new AFF neighbor out here!

    Randy

    Randy,

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it and gathering everything to get started on the hangar house this summer! I'll shoot you a PM here now. Looking forward to seeing your setup and how she performs.

  6. Howdy John,

Where abouts in AK are ya?  I might be in the mood to make a good deal for my Avid.  26" bushwheels and skis.

    :BC:

Mr. Perry, I replied to your PM. Would definitely be interested in your Avid. Always better to go for a known quantity than a wildcard. At the very least would like to meet up at some point. I'm in Anchorage for now, but moving to a place on Wolf Lake in Wasilla hopefully this coming summer.

Thanks for the warm welcome JimChuk, glad to finally be on here. The wing was one of the first things I asked about. But hopefully Mr. Perry and I can work something out.

Randy, (suberavid) has a hangar on Wolfe Lake and knows these machines inside and out.

For the fun factor its pretty damn hard to beat these birds and you might be pretty surprised what you can haul in them.  I have had some pretty uhhh,... questionable loads in mine :lmao:  They are not a cub, but they will beat a Tcrate.  I flew side by side with a buddy in his 100 HP tcrate and outperformed him in every way.   Now that I am back on a computer I will reply to your PM.  My phone was having issues letting me type.

Yes I will keep the amphib no matter what!

I'll look Randy up, hoping to start construction on my place once breakup is over so I can get out of Anchorage asap.

Replying to your PM now. Sounds like you've put them to the test. Impressive compared to the tcart and what people are asking for them with the 85hp motors.

  7. Wait a second..  wouldn't that leave our founding father (of AFF) without an Avid/Fox?!

Hey now, don't put me out of an opportunity!

And sounds like he's got it covered.

  9. Hi All,

Just a quick introduction as I am not an Avid or Fox owner (yet). I live up in Alaska, did my primary flight training just this past summer and finished my instrument rating back in October and now looking for a plane to do more of what I want and build some skills in for an affordable price. No tail wheel time as of yet but will be coming shortly then on to floats so I can fully open up my backyard more to go explore in. Looking forward to learning more from y'all here and hopefully joining you in ownership.

    John

  10. Hi All,

First off, thanks for letting me join this little community. I've been admiring the KF and Avid's for some time. Finally went and got my PPL back in June and then finished up my Instrument at the end of October. I figure now is the time I find the plane I want to further my flying and let me get the freedom I've been looking for. I live up in Alaska and have done all my flying up there, I usually hunt and fish solo as I have a lot of time off and can't always find someone to go with me so the lighter useful load doesn't bother me. The experimental side of things is appealing so I can do most of my own maintenance and upgrades as needed (eventually floats and float changes).

Which brings me here, I've been gathering as much knowledge as I can but I'm currently on a hitch at work and interested in a Mk IV that's for sale in Texas. All my family is down there and I'll be heading there for some work training in January but would like to talk to someone familiar with the plane or someone local I can hire to go look at it for me and give an outside assessment on it. If anyone can help I'd be much appreciated.

Thanks and hopefully I'll be a proud Avid owner here in the near future.
