Foot wellI’ll do my best to update my build but for some reason I can only add about half my photos without getting some sort of error.First try at covering.

Interesting information about the kitfox letter, I used it this last summer for the model II I’m building and had my registration in less than a month, totally painless. I did order up the eaa packet that details the registration process and followed it exactly, maybe that helped but I did use the kitfox letter as I had no bill of sale.

Im wondering if I need to stop thinking out loud, I’m starting to poke some holes in my theory...

I think you could figure it out really close if you had an inflight adjustable prop that you could fully load the engine with, I’ll try to explain. As far as I know most dyno charts are presented at max power, so you will need to fly your aircraft at a predetermined speed with throttle fully advanced. For example I want to know how much hp it takes to fly my 582 powered kitfox at 70mph, level off fully advance the throttle and adjust pitch to attain 70 mph, now take a look at the tach, it indicates 5200 rpm. The 582 chart says at 5200 rpm the 582 can produce about 50 hp. So with my theoretical example it takes approximately 50 hp to pull my kitfox through the air at 70 mph.
Most of my background is with Diesel engines but my experience has been that as an engine accumulates hours performance is hardly affected, I suspect gas motors to be similar as long as the carbs and Ignition are maintained.

I guess this part confused me. I’m guessing the reason they don’t provide that data is it’s easily computed from the dyno charts they provide.

This is correct, the vertical tail post on my II was 5/8 .035 as well as the rudders leading edge tube, the model IV uses 3/4 dia at both locations, not sure on wall thicknesses. I replaced the vertical tail post on my II with 3/4 .049, I left a short stub from the 5/8 tail post for the 3/4 .049 to slip over, the .049 gave a better fit and a bit of tail weight won’t hurt my build.

gearing does not change horsepower.

It’s time to chose the engine for your Lancair legacy, do you go for the 750 hp Pratt Whitney pt6 at a measly 130ft lbs torque, or spring for the lycoming 180hp o360 at a whopping 350 ft lbs torque?

I pitched the prop to limit engine rpm to 11,200, the dyno charts I have for the phazer show peak power at this rpm. Prop rpm would be about 2250.

The total weight on that screenshot may be a bit optimistic but probably not far off.

I was getting around 365lbs thrust with my 66 inch three blade gsc. I now have a 68 inch three blade luga to test. I had the phazer motor off the test stand to fit it to my kitfox and fab the motor mount. I’m hoping to get it back on the test stand soon and try out this new prop and also develop and test the intake for the kitfox.

A bit more progress. I have a terrible time trusting anyone to touch my projects but I just couldn’t bring myself to blast and paint this thing so I took it to the powder coater, I’m very happy with the finished product. While the airframe was being blasted and coated I got the covering off a wing, The craftsmanship looks very good so that’s a relief. After all the little modifications to the fuselage it feels really good to finally have it ready to start assembly. I have a couple projects I have to do around the house then I’ll be hard at work on the kitfox again.

when I had my phazer motor with gsc prop on the stand a vibration would come in at a certain rpm, as rpm increased it would disappear, I might give one of these a try.

Did you try the luga without the balance master?

That is the route I would take in this particular instance. The way I see it if the seller has no paperwork he can’t prove it’s an avid in the first place so you are left buying parts to build an aircraft.

what’s the problem? My kitfox II came with zero paper work and I had my registration less than two weeks after applying?

I thought about doing a 3 point attachment but decided to only use 2 one at the seat truss and one at the rear float fitting.

Ha, I wish, hopefully there is someone out there that’s got some secret stuff going on though. I hope to start building the motor mount this weekend.
