That's one option. Your right about that. I don't have the engine mounted yet. Been working on the gear and fire wall. Once I get the engine mounted I can then see what needs to be done to Sub cowl to make it work. In the meantime something may pop up. Thanks !! -
Allen are you saying your fox cowling is for sale? If so is it the round cowling? My Avid came with a Subaru cowling that will not work. To narrow in the front. -
Wanted Airdale VW Cowling. Got to be one laying around somewhere.

Ordered a mount from Great Plains. Now in need of a cowling. I just think there is one not in use out there somewhere.

Thanks to all that are helping me get going with this project. I had an Avid that I rebuilt about 21 years ago when Airdale was around and I was 54 instead of 75. I had other Airplanes in between. I just need to get up to speed on where to get parts and how to navigate around this site. Jim Chuk has been very helpful. Thanks Fred for the Bungee post.

This isn't the first Avid I've installed a VW. I had good success with the last one and it would haul two people around with no problem. That was in 2003 when I sold it and it's still going. I've decided to do it all over.
My first Avid that had a upside down 582 and had 2 engine outs. That's when I decided to go with a VW. There quite a few VW's flying here in Ohio.
So if you know of anyone that may have a VW cowling for an Avid let me know and I'll see if he wants to sell it. Thank You for your interest in this post. Neil

Model C with HH wings. The VW was 80 HP I know it's not going to preform like a 912 but it did preform well. Prince prop was the best combination for that engine. The engine was built by Great Plains Aircraft. I don't remember the empty weight. The VW weighs 180 lbs. Yes the 912 is the best bet if one can afford it.

I had an Avid C model with a VW and it worked great. It has to be built right and have the right Prop. Prince prop is the best combination for the VW. It's still flying. So the VW can work. Neil

When I look up axles for my Model C I'm not sure what axle to order. One has two collars welded on the axle. The other is a straight axle with threads.
Can someone enlighten me. Thank you for your help.

have an Avid A model with a VW on it. I picked it up back in February thinking I could get my ticket in it. He's a Lil to small for me. Has a 911 gross.
Thanks for the reply. I saw this Avid on Barnstormers for 18400. I had a C model Avid with a Great planes 2180 VW I converted from a 582. Had a higher gross Wt. Had HH wings. I sold it about 10 years ago. I had three airplanes since then. What is the empty Wt of your Avid? Is the engine mounted directly to the firewall or was a mount used? What size WV is it, 1835, 2180 or 2400? Lot of questions. Neil from Ohio

Strut Farings
in Avidfoxflyers General Hangar
Posted · Edited by Neil
I recently had my struts rebuilt using 1" tubing because of rust on the old tubes. I now need to paint and install the faring. There in lies my problem, what should I use to do this without buying Kit Fox's plastic faring ? I'm thinking the wood faring was available from Avid years back. So what do we use now ? Thanks, Neil
