necessity is the mother of invention   damn, you are putting bad bad ideas into my head.  dont think I would get much sleep behind a 2 stroke.. the RPM changes with every bump in the sky.  I do remember a flight in a PA 12 years ago that I did fall asleep for about 15 miles... scared the ever loving crap out of me.  Good thing it was trimmed and rigged right, cause I was only about 4-500' off the deck.  That flight SHOULD have ended very badly.

    Thanks Ken,

Hope you dont mind, but I am putting the two pics right here so they show up in this thread.  Looks like a damn easy way to go for elevator trim.

    Elevator trim
    Hey terciops,

Can you post a pic of how you did the aerovee install?  I have electric trim on mine, but if this works better, and you get more speed/better climb/less drag, I am all for it.  The price is right for sure.

Why would you bring personal shit into the "list"
Is it just me, or do you think the line was crossed by a certain individual on the list making remarks about another individuals wife, and eluding that because the guy likes to look at women that he is a bad guy and therefore his opinions dont mean shit?  I dont get it..  I am no angel, and by golly I get lots of emails showing titties and such.. dont think it makes me a bad pilot or any less knowledgable about planes!

OK done with my rant now

the instructionsI had said that if you went to -6 the control forces would be more....  The -6 was for guys that did not have any elevator trim and were using the flaperons for trim.  did you try to pull on just a touch of flaps to get the stick forces back to normal?  Go fly again, without adjusting you elevator trim.  Level off at cruise or what ever speed you had it trimmed out at before, then pull on the flaps until it hold the elevation / trim setting that you had set before.  Dont touch you flap handle, land and measure the angle on the flaperons to see where you are at.  Adust the flaperons to that angle with the flaps off.  You may want to have 1 or 2 degrees in there to play with IF you want to be able to trim the airplane slightly with the flaps.  If you have them set right, the stick forces should be NO MORE than they were before.  The only thing you should notice with the new F7a's is that it does not take as much rudder work to coordinate turns.

I would round it... a straight cut is just seting you up for a stress riser and a good place for it to break.  I will come in with mine on a 45 so it disrtibutes the load.  I also fly off big rocks and beat the shit out of the plane... If you are flying off grass or nice gravel it probably wont make that much difference.

The stock spring is a single leaf spring.. It was probably OK when the model A came out at 440#... now that the planes are 580#+  the spring WILL break.  Hell I was flying Gregs model A and it looks ;like it is gonna break just sitting on the trailer.  Most planes have multiple leaf springs so why would the Avid or kitfox be different?  You need weight in the tail, you know the single leaf is gonna break, it dont take a rocket scientist to figure out the easiest way to get weight as far back as possible and cure the breaking spring at the same time.

If on the remote chance you break the 2 leaf spring, you still have a tail skid that will keep the rudder from getting ground off..

    Hey Steve,

Click your link again.. I think it has been updated.  They pulled the oil tank apart and found a piece of plastic lodged in the oil pick up...Now you know why

NONONONONONONO on the weight and balance, the total weight on my tailwheel is 51#.  I want more.  by moving the CG back, you are spose to get better short field, better climb, lighter stick force, more elevator authority in the flare etc.  Dean said they tested it back to 21 or 22" but he advised not to stall it without flaps on if you go back that far.  He said that at 18 or 19 you wont have any issues other than better flight performance.

I installed the bolts and tac welded the heads in when I covered mine.  I can give them a good whack with a hammer and they will pop right out.  I also put an inspection plate back there in case I do need to get to them to remove the tail wheel for when I go on floats.  It would only take an hour or two to put inspections rings back there so you can cut the fabric out then you wont have to worry about it ever again.

I have not come up with a measurement yet, but an going to shorten it as much as I can, and still clear the rudder on a good bounce.  With both springs there is not much give in it so I dont think you need more than an inch of two of clearance.  I am willing to trade off clearance for as much AOA as I can get.  As it is now, the tail wheel always touches before the mains, and I should be able to drag it in at 35 instead of 40 if I can get the AOA.  Take off is the same.  I could get off WAY faster if I had more AOA on the wing.

For the flaperons. -6 is the leading edge of the flap DOWN and trailing edge UP.  I think you will find that you will end up with them about -2 or -3 if you trim it out for level flight, then land without touching the flap handle and measure it.  Atleast mine is at -2.5 for level flight.  By reflexing them the full -6, you will get alot more stick force on your roll inputs.

I am going to cut mine down, and I did have to grind the head of the bolt to get it to fit in between just like you are thinking.

What is your CG at?  I have 51# on my tail weight and I want to add some more to slide the CG back to at least 18"  I talked to dean and he said it will make a whole new bird out of it.

  16. akflyer added a post in a topic Best way to refuel a two stroke with no injection on cross countries?

I take a couple 5ers with me on CC trips.  Mix the fuel in the jug then dump in the wing.. Assures good mixing!  I am injected and dont worry about pump failure.  Chances are about the same for a pump going at as there is for the wing folding, just my .02

My last flight was 19 gusting 28... makes for great short field performance.  Just watch your downwind turn lest you fall out of the sky

I used a straight edge and an angle finder.  I used a level on the mixer to set it, then used spring clamps to hold the flaperons level with a straight edge as they show in the book.  It was quick to adjust the rods ends and whala, you got yerself a set of new mixer arms that give you the correct differencial.

The angle finder was just a cheap plastic one I got at the hardware store.

holy shit did you hit on a sore subject with me   The wife tossed my water bed for some super duper pillow top high $ mofo matress that in 1 year had the hog troughs in it... Pissed me off cause you cant flip them (the same shit that pissed you off.. come to find out, you just spin them end for end about every 2 or 3 mohtns and they wont do that... I spun mine and believe it or not, it has come back and is good shape again and comfy to sleep on.  I still want my waveless water bed back, but she has had a shit load of surgeries and she cant sleep on a water bed anymore....

What do you plan on doing with the plane.  Are you planning any short field stuff or mostly pavement pounding?  You would not beleive the difference a hundred pounds will make in the kitfox or avid.  I would love to have a 912, but am not about to lay out the $ for it.  For me it is not worth it.  Itrust a 2 stroke and maintain it just as it should be... like my life depends on it.  This does not mean I am crapping my pants with every flight thinking it is going to wuit on me.  I never think about an engine failure unless I am over open water and cant glide to the other side   I do this in "certified" planes with lycomings too so that does not really come into play here.

If you are looking for a cross country plane think speed wing.  I normaly cruise about 70-75 mph ground speed on my GPS.  This is very comparable to a Tailor Craft or a stock super cub.  If you are a bigger guy, look for a kitfox model III or an avid "C" or "D" as they have more shoulder room (39" versus 36").

I was out this weekend with myself, the wife and full tanks (36 gallons) plus a 25 pound survival gear bag, a 15 pound tool bag and 30 pounds of camping gear.  I had no issues getting off the snow (about a 200' take off roll)  and still climbing out about 600' FPM.  Cruise at 5600 was 4.8 gallons an hour and 72 on the ground speed.  My Avid "C" is a PIG at 581#.

We got out and got back home.... We were out on the back side of Bedlam lake yesterday when mark went trough the ice on the creek half way up the hood... I went in nuts deep trying to get him out.. Bout the time we got him out of the water and back up on dry land, the ash hit.... we hold up underthe trees and got a fire going and waited it out.  Mark got some good shot with his cammera, I will get the pics tonight and post some.  The plane had about 3/16" of ash on it when we got back to the cabin. This aM we got a storm advisory.  winds to 80 MPH... we loaded up the sleds, I pulled the radios and blew them out, cleaned the ash off as best I could and hauled ass.  Got home just as the winds were hitting 25 at the airport.  She is in the garage right now looking pretty sad, but nothing I cant clean up.... The sleds are a different story.  We rode them out about 40 miles in the ash so I am sure all bearings, hyfax etc, and toast.

    http://www.avo.alaska.edu/images/browse.php?&page=1

Damn thing blew again yesterday and hosed up my BFR.  Today the winds are blowing the shit away from us so should be good for slying.  Will try and get some shots myself today if I get a chance to fly.

There are some cool pics on one of the pages I linked to that show the ash cloud in the upper atmosphere at about 65,000'.  Looks pretty cool.
