I use Pinacle software for my vids.  I can save a mini DV to HD, and it does clear it up a little bit, but no where near as good as if you shoot it in HD to begin with.

I set the prop for 6300 at run up and it gives me about 66-6700 on takeoff.  I bump in a little more pitch in cruise to keep the EGT's at 1100 to 1150.  normal cruise is 5600 giving me an average ground speed of 72 on the GPS.  Fuel burn at 5600 is 4.8 GPH at 5800 it goes to 5.8 to 6 GPH.  WOT on take off shows 7.8 GPH.

    Hey Randy,

missed a fun run.  We just did Ninilchik, Kasilof, McGahans, Soldotna and Kenai.  No bad winds, maybe 10-12.  Was real nice this AM but afternnon brought some clouds.

I was up till about midnight getting the belly mount radiator installed.  All my overheating problems went away as I knew they would.  Now slow flight high power settings and she never goes above 160!

I know that alot of guys are burning 100LL in 2 strokes.  Most agree that you should use decalin if you do.  It is a lead scavanger.  If you only run 100ll every once in awhile, I have not seen any issues with it.  If you run it all the time, there have been known issues with lead plating the crank bearings.  I ran 100 LL in my 600 snowmachines for a season without issue.  When I tried it in the 1000 the engine ran like crap and just would not perform.  Go back to normal pump gas and she pulled like a raped ape.

My brother ran 100ll in his 582 for about 150 hrs without using decalin and it never had any issues... seems like some have good luck while others have issues right away.

If I can make it into town this weekend for the breakfast, I will bring some divers weights out to the airport with me and do a little experimenting and see how it goes.  I ran the numbers and it was about 15# in the tail to get me where I wanted to be.  That would be about equivelent to moving the battery to the tail.  AKFLYERBOB made a real nice mount to move his back there so I will copy it and get mine moved ASAP.  Dang summer time brings on too many projects and not enough time!

I hope to get into town this weekend for the EAA pancake breakfast.  If I do, I am sure we will be doing some"unofficial" measuring if Randy comes down.  Should know later today if I can pull off a jail break on Friday and get down there.

hmmm a load of ordinance out the ass end of a C5 on his hangar should get his attention.  If you paid up front for it, I would be getting very pushy right now.  Nothing worse than having someone else hold you back from flying.

kinda funny how the guys that have tried the new F7a's are all for them, and say it makes a difference.  The guys that have not tried them, just tell you how much you dont need them.  True the plane can be flown without them, but damn, they do make a difference, and are nice to have..

I am going to experiment with my flaps and see how much I can get without getting reversal.  With the new F7a mixers, we should be able to run alot more flap without getting into the reversal cause by the down flaperon drag as we dont get near as much down with aileron deflection now.

I am liking the IFA.  when I set the prop for cruise on my brothers KF II at 5800 RPM, then left it there for landing, the result was I was only able to turn 4750 on take off.  There is alot of performance left on the table by not having IFA I.M.O.  It took all I could get RPM wise to get his plane on step with 2 fat guys on board.  This was due to the floats he had on it, but still, it was a booger.  I should be getting my new floats on my plane this time in and will see how she does!

I tried AKFLYERBOB Brolga prop on my plane last Sunday.  I thought that would be the ticket and my performance would go up.. No dice.  about the same climb, and at 5600 RPM my fuel burn was 1 gallon an hour more than with the IVO with a 5 MPH speed reduction.  I am going back to the 2.62 gears and sticking with my IVO IFA for now.  I think his performance difference is because he is normaly solo, I am normaly duel with alot more fuel, plus he has almost 3' more wing than I do.

581 empty.  That is with the 24" double heavy old style aircraft tundra tires.

I can get off in about 150' with just me and full fuel (36 gallons).  2 people and full fuel it is a different story.. about 250-300'.  I can get in alot shorter than I can get out.  I think alot of my issue is the big heavy tires I am running.  They are about 40# more than I need to be packing infront of the CG

Mine is around 11.85 if I remember right.  I talked to Dean Wilson and he said to move it to 18-19 " and we will be alot happier with the STOL.  He said he put a CG restriction of 16" on it because he knew that some guys would be building and learning to fly in the plane.  He tested it back to 21" and said at 20 you were fine, at 21 he did not recommend stalling unless you had full flaps on to help get the nose down.  He said at 18 the only noticable difference is lighter elevator, and better performance.  I have just not taken the time to strap some lead on my tail spring, but I think I may do that today if the wind does not pick up too bad.  I really want a calm day for testing so I can really tell how it changes.  Right now, I at at ful up trim at anything below 85 indicated.

    Hey Randy,

Good to see you over here on the dark side, I know you can contribute alot!  I am all about learning from others "hard knocks".  Were is the CG on your plane?  I have not moved the battery to the tail on mine yet, so I am still at a WAY forward CG.  I know I can get the performance better than it is now.  Have you had any cooling issues with yours?  I am going to open up the botton of my cowling a bit as I dont think I am getting enough exit air.  Even with insulation on the firewall, I can feel the heat so I am thinking I need to ge the air moving in there.  A trip to Big Lake a couple weeks ago had me flying with the door open so my legs would cool down

    Hope to see you there

  22. akflyer added a post in a topic Flew a CH 701 yesterday

I have watched alot of the vids of this bird, and there is one at a local airport.  I just have a hard time getting past the looks... this is one butt ugly bird   I would love to fly one though as it may just change my outlook on the plane, super STOL is what I am all about, and so far, I have not been super impressed with my "C".  Dont get me wrong, I can get in and out pretty short, but not close to what the book says.  Bobs KF I kicks my ass on the short work, but I can out cruise him if I punch it up.  May have something to do with the big heavy tires I have on mine too as I think we were pretty close on ski's.

  23. akflyer added a post in a topic Looking at a Model IV

To do a good buyers inspection, I would take the normal "condition inspection" checklist with me and go over it real good.. this is if you are looking at buying a flying plane.  When I bought mine, I knew it was a wrecked basket case and would be a total rebuild so I did not worry about anything other than getting it home and stripping it down to see what I was dealing with.  What engine does it have?  how many hours on saiengine and in the last how many years.  If it has a 582 in it, and is high time, or even worse, very low time in the last 5 or 6 years, you may be looking at pulling it down and putting new seals in it.  Or you could have a reputable rotax guy do a leak test on the seals and go from there.  I am not familliar with the 912, but I know they have a list of ADs to be complied with, some of which are VERY expensive (if none are complied with you are pretty much looking at half the cost of a new engine).

Attached is a pretty conventinal checklist that the avid / kitfox owners have been using for a long time.  Some apply some dont depending on the accessories / engine installed, use your judgment and NA the ones that dont really apply.

Get serious about this inspection as it is your ass up there, and you really want to catch shit on the ground not in the air!  I have seen "showbirds" that really just had a nice coat of paint hiding alot of issues, and have seen pretty ratty birds that are flown every day that were structually very sound just well used, so dont judge the "book by its cover".

whew, there is my $10.00 worth

My brother had one on his KF with 582 and it would put out the smoke!  I can get killer smoke from my 80 cc RC plane, so I am certain you could get good smoke out of a 912.

Well you called that one Jack.  I gave the 3:1 a fair shake, but I think I lost allthe way around.  take off, climb, and cruise.  The fuel burn went up too as I have to trun the engine faster to get the same prop speed.  You would think that I could just go with more pitch and get iut back but in real world the math just is not working out.  I did way better with the 2.62:1.  I will be swapping abck next time home.

I have not got my hands on the 800 yet, still trying to get a price from AC salvage on the engine, puter, wireing harness etc.
