wind laying down in the evenings?  I would be hard pressed not to take her for a spin tomorrow late afternoon   As long as the wind favors the runway and is 10-15 fly the crap out of it, just watch your initial crosswind/downwind turns and keep your speed up.

Well, I have a ton of dumb stunts I have pulled in a plane and walked away from.  Some caused damamage, others were just ass puckering no harm no foul holy crap I cant belive I just did that moments.  I will start putting some of the dumb stuff into words in the next few days to get this kicked off.

  7. akflyer added a post in a topic Compass correction card required equipment?

I did a little search on this one, and as far as the FAR is concerned, you have to have a compass corrdection card.. dont say shit about having it filled out, just says you need one...  When I had the FAA guy come down for my inspection to re-issue my AW, he did say something about the card.  I told him it dod not matter cause when I stuck the radio on the dash, the compass will only show one heading no matter where you point it.  We both laughed and he said it was not required, but if the damn thing was not gonna work where it was mounted, then why was I carring the extra weight.  I told him I dont like empty holes in the pannel.  He did not have any issues with it.
I have never been able to get my compass to read anything past Due E and 060.  Dont matter if I am heading due north, due south ect, it will read somewhere between E and 060.

If I pull the radio out, I get a little more swing, but it is still not right.  One of these days I will stick the vertical card compass back in the windshield, but I hate that bugger cause it blocks the view.  Maybe when I put my new fiberglass pannel in, I can find a spot for the Vert card co. that will allow it to read correct, as it is a tool I have wished for i nthe past when I went into the soup without a GPS on board.  As it was, I had to dead recon off the wave direction about 25' off the water and hoped to hell I saw the island before I flew into the cliff.  Worked out OK for me, but I was pucker'd up good for about 15 minutes.  oh, I was on wheels too so flying that close to the water really really got my attention.  That was in a PA 12, but that full story should go into another thread..

Maybe I should start a new thread called close calls, what you can learn from other mistakes may just save you life

Steve, you get a chubby any time some schmoo at EAA "tech" has to eat crow   I do agree with ya on that one.  I have called up before after doing my own research and the tech counselor gave me an answer that was WAY out in left field.  I dont even remember the guys name now.  After he gave me his speil, I hit him with FAR#s quotes, and facts and he just got pissy and told me it was obvious I knew better than him so why even bother calling.... Pisses me off when someone cant even put up a good argument.

Compass is not part of the required equipt in Experimental AC for day VFR flight.  Went through this with my A&P..

    Good quick reference.

If he does not like it, then just put an in-op sticker over it for the inspections, then peel it off when he signs it off.

    September 11 never forget
Will never forget getting ready to head to the airport at Deadhorse to go home after being at work for 6 weeks.  Got out of the shower and kicked on the TV while getting ready and saw the news.  I was shocked and dumbfounded at what I saw.  Shock was replaced with pure anger as we realized what had happened and that we were indeed under terrorist attack.  The images of people jumping out windows to escape the flames will never leave me.  I sat in a hotel room for a few days waiting to get a flight out as all airtraffic was shut down.  Those few little bastards shut down the entire nation for several days, who would have thought they could pull that off.

< to the soldiers who are now fighting in other countries, so we dont have to fight the terrorists on our own soil.  You have my everlasting support, thought and prayers.  Come home safe after you kick the shit out of them

< to the fallen ones, you wont be forgotten

I like 6200 on the ground.  If you are turning too many RPM, your EGTs are gonna go over 1200 in the air pretty easy.  Make sure you put the tiny tach in.  I have seen way too many lies coming off the analog tachs.  From 1500-2000 RPM off to 2-300 RPM off but I have never seen the analog line up with the tiny tach.  The tiny is absolute, the analog seems to wander a bit.

With the catastrophic failure of Kreem likeyou have shown, I am sure that you would be fully F'd whether there was a fuel strainer in there or not.  That is gonna plug the line, the outlet or the strainer in VERY short order!

  18. akflyer added a post in a topic How many hours do you fly a year?

I put almost 300 hrs on my brothers kitfox in the first year he had it up here, with 250 of those on floats that first summer.  The weather has been kinda crappy and I have been working over alot of extra weeks this year and I only have 75 hrs on my plane this year (but have probably another 75 in other planes).  My normal year flying.  250-300 hrs.

I am almost ashamed to answer.  Got a buddy that is an A&P/ AI and he charges 60 hr.  he looked the plane over and went throught the new log books I started (original logs burned in house fire).  he was into it for 90 minutes.  I traded him some electric RC stuff he wanted for the 90 bucks.

yeah, the airplane will outperform any 912 I have seen, but what makes people run and hide is when you fly

are you talking about redoing the paperwork and getting a repaimans certificate for it?  You cant ever apply for the repairmans certificate once if has been registred unless you were on the registration as the original owner.  You may be able to turn in the registration, say the aircraft was destroyed, and say you built a new plane out of many different pieces.  The paperwork would be a nightmare and you would have to go throught phase 1 again.  When the DAR came down and lookied at mine, I showed him in the rebuild pics and manual I put together that I had more work into the plane than if it was built new, and should therefore be able to get a repairmans for it.. he was a damn nice guy, but told me there was no way in hell I could ever do it.

You could make your own by soldering some screen on there.

I have a filter under my header tank just before it flows into my transducer for the fuel flow gauge.  I HIGHLY reccomend the use of a fuel flow meter.  If for nothing else, it will tell you when the fuel outlet or filter is plugging off.  You can get them for 110 - 120 bucks.  I would have never known my fuel filter was plugging off unless I had the flow meter!  Mine was caught in plenty of time when she had just started to reduce fuel flow, but was far from killing the engine.  The filter looked pretty damn good till I pulledit off and really got a looking at it close, then you could see the fine crap and fibers that Doug was talking about.  120 is the best money I spent on that plane yet, cause where I was going that day, a plugged filter would have put me in the trees at best with a long damn walk home, and a helicopter to get the bird outa the damn pines.

she be looking GOOOOOOOOOOOOD.  If I was you, I would not be able to wait for paperwork and other crap to fly it.  As soon as mine was what I was sure was airworthy, I flew the crap out of it causde the A&P was on vacation and I just could not wait another 3 weeks to fly it... self restraint is not one of my stronger points

no they wont fit.  Mine were plugged off too, but just letting the new gas sit in them for about an hour and all the crud loosened up and flushed out.  I did get new elbows, just cause I did not want to stick old tarninshed ones back in a new wing and paint job.  I used the old one to flush, then put the new ones in after I was done flushing.  I am torn on finger strainers.  In some instances they may save you, but in most cases they can F you real hard.

  25. akflyer added a post in a topic Tank flushing

I just put 5 galloins in mine, shook the shit outa the plane by the wing strut attach point and the wing, let it set for a few, then shook the shit outa it again.  Opened the drain valve on the tank bottom I had installed just for this and let it go into a gas can through a Mr funnel so I could see what came out.  I did not get any nastys out the first time, but after 65 hrs, I did have some shit in the fuel filter that started to plug it off (could see the fuel flow rate going down a few point from normal on the take off pull power settings).  Sure do love the flow meter!
