I have the steps on mine with the wider, taller gear. The step is a really good shin buster cause it is too small to really be useful. I just step into it grabbing the overhead bar in the cabin. It is alot easier than getting into a super cub!

Dont know what to tell you on that one.. I can tell you for certain that the two guys up here that got the fat avid fuses had to bend the front carry through to make the existing wings from a MK IV and a C HH fit the fuse. Both are well documented and there was a line of communication with Avid/Airdale discussing the issue. I am sure that it has now been corrected. There were quite a few issues with the buy this fuse and just transfer all your stuff over from your existing plane. Control columns needed to be extended, wings did not line up etc. These issues are shown on this forum under the fat avid threads.

well I would say that someplace along the line, the jig for the avid fuse was changed as the guys building the fat avids that were going to use their existing wings had to bend the tubes on the fuse to make them fit the wings also. I know that Jack and Randy both had to "modify" the wing attach points on their planes to make the wings fit. I know they both talked to Steve Winder at length about it and that was the recommendation from the factory. I would not let it scare me away from the plane.

have the guy take some pictures of it and post them up so we can see if this was the same issue that Randy and Jack had.

I have never run the nissan oil, but we run the Citgo Sea n Ski oil in our snowmachines and planes. It is Yamalube with a different wrapper on it. We have been running it for years and 100s of thousands of miles in various snow machines. Never has an oil related issue with any of the sleds or planes so far.

have you disconnected the flaperons just inside the fuse at the top of the control rod and checked that each flaperon takes the same force to move up and down? if one is a little sticky, I can see it not moving as much as the other and giving you a bit of an asymetrical roll input when you pull the flaps on. Mine had a sticky flaperon and when I pulled the flaps on, the control stick would go full left if I was not hanging onto it. if this is playing into your rolling issues or not.

I dont think it would work for me. I am not sure if the firewall pattern is the same or not. I would probably be better off just starting from scratch as the new engine has exhaust and intake on the same side etc... But thanks for the offer!

    Hey Mike

Thanks for the info, and yes, your right, I did have my grubby little dick skinners on Jacks pedals.... hmm... that almost sounds real bad don't it. I meant his brake pedals that you built

If I go back on wheels I will get a set from you. Looks like I could save you some time if I send in my old ones and have you modify them At any rate, I am deffinately into more braking power as mine just suck for what I want to do!

Yeah, and if we get to bickering (sometimes alot of fun) we can call a jackass a jackass It is a hell ov a lot easier to find info on this type of forum versus the yahoo groups style.. but it is hard to convince guys that have been "loyal" to the group to change.

Here is a few shots of the progress on the bird. Lotsa fiberglass work to the sponsons on the hull. If you remember right in the original pics, they were very wavy possibly from sitting in the sun and the high temps having their way with them. Some honeycomb composite, and glass work and they are now tougher than hell and straight!

New glass work on the sponsons

    Old mechanical brakes

    New matco Brakes

    Tail feathers in polybrush

Tail feathers in the first coat of silver

Looking good Bob, keep at it, spring is right around the corner and I wanna see this bird fly!

X2 on what jack said. Amy bolt subject to rotation should have a cotter key in it. My A&P was ADAMANT about this.

What type of trim issues are you having? I have found, that when I try to trim it out with the flaperons (more nose up trim) I scrub off about 5 MPH and the roll control is alot heavier. I play with the flaps to get the roll control feeling the lightest, then up trim on the elevator to maintain altitude. At my present CG, I am using full up trim to hold altitude at 5500 RPM and about 70 MPH on the ground (85 indicated). When I load heavy in the baggage area I can go to pretty much neutral on the elevator trim.

cool! if he has a good price on them, I will save myself the trouble and just get them from him!

the pedals on the right are the ones that Bob modified from the amphib, and the ones on left are from the KF III kit that he has. You can see that the KF mounts are lowered and in a good position to give you some mechanical advantage. I will build a set of pedals like Joey has now if I put my plane back on wheels. I am really liking the design! What did he hit you for a set of those?

Remeber that the 1100 is per float, so you will have a little fudge factor there. I know that most guys here put way more in the plane, especially the beavers and otters than the float is rated for. When there is money at stake, any float left sticking above the water is lost revenue

What is the weight of the baumann 1500 compared to what you have now? and what is the price differencial between what he wants and what you can sell yours for. I would be willing to bet the performance would be better on the baumanns versus your amphibs, but your main mission is what will be the deal breaker. Can you live with straight floats, or do you need the amphibs to keep it at the airport? You may be able to find a set of EDO 1320 that would be about perfect for you plane.

You can also just weld a new tab on lower on your existing toe piece and run the threads down lower on the master cylinder shaft. You can cut new threads or have a machine shop do it, as long as you drop the mount point down to give you more leverage. Just lowering the bottom mounting bracket will not give you the increased pedal pressure, but may make it more ergonomic for your feet. You have to lower the pivot point on the top section in order to increase the pressure put on the master. Right now geometry works against you, but by lowering the top attachpoint, you gain leverage and pressure to the caliper.

Not much. When mine was built, it had most of the Mk IV upgrades, then I did a few more when I rebuilt it. The main difference in mine now is the door latches, motor mount and cowling. I still have the "C" cowling till I can free up some funds to complete my upgrades! I am sure I will be going to the MK IV cowling when I get the new engine built up as I will need more room under the hood for the exhaust etc. Should be starting on the engine mods mid next week, atleast getting the adapter for the gear box machined etc.

not necessarily, mine has baggage behind seat and round rudder... but it is still a "C"
The serial number would be the best way. get the # then call brett at airdale and ask him to double check if the paperwork etc does not readily tell you what it is.

  18. akflyer added a post in a topic Catalina Gross Weight?

hmmm didnt think about just extending my wings and not the struts. when I made new struts for mine I used 1" X .059" tubing. hmmm now you have me thinking about just making extensions for mine and moving the flaperons out to the end. I sure wish Steve would show up on the lists again and give us some words of wisdom.

How is your build coming along? updates have not been real stellar from the chunky avid club lately

Doug, the thought was the catalina wing is longer... and would be better for the heavier fat bastards.... in fact, I want to build plug in tips for mine to extend them out. Would be nothing to whip up a longer set of struts etc. to make them the same length as the catalina... more wing is more lift, is slower flight for me... I like getting in and out short, especially on floats

Most things I have read were in line with what Joey said. VNE was due to no rib stitching, and over the evolution, I belive the VNE was increased to 125 or 130 with rib stitching. I have had mine to 125 and nothing ripped off, but the flapperons were pretty heavy feeling

I do 110 descents all the time.

I also think the 1200 was more what the hull would float safely than a wing issue. It sounds like at 1200 you are sitting pretty low in the water and get some pretty good splashing. I would not be afraid to go up to 1320 but would probably not be trying to do any snaps or spins with it at the full 1320

Gross weight is 1200, WS is 36'. It has the same spars as the HH and same rib spacing if I remember correctly. I think the Anfib and catalina both have the same gross and wing, changes were to sponsons on the struts versus wing tips etc.

Mine is not quite that bad.. 2 weeks on 2 weeks off (spose to be but I have been working over alot) and I catch the first plane from the house at 12:55 and am at work by 4:30. Leave work at 5:25 pm and am home by 9:30 pm. I could not go back to working a 9-5 job unless it was well well into the 6 figure range, and it better come with 6 months of vacation time a year to boot

Bob has been working on it damn near every day. I think he is still having computer issues though. I will make sure I get over there when I get back home and if nothing else take a bunch of pics and post for him.. I forgot to go over and work on his computer last time I was home.
