    I do know how it goes once a new plane shows up in the stable though. When I first started my rebuild, I had 98% of it done in the first couple months. then my brother showed up with his Kitfox and I just flew the piss out of his plane the first year. Finally, I knew if I did not hand my set of keys (to his plane) back to him I would never get back on my project. I relenquished the keys and a week and ahalf later I did the maiden on my bird!



    But that was my story, so you have to come up with your own damn excuse Doug!

    Another day of flying
    It has been a record breaking summer here with over 30 consecutive days of rain and cold weather. The few days of sunshine we have had this summer were accompanied by 30+ knots of wind.. Sunday WE had a small break in the clouds so I headed to the lake and took off for a buddies summer fish camp about 40 miles away across Cook Inlet. Was just going to be a quick day trip, but the fish were biting and he talked me into making a quick run back home to hit the local adult beverage store to get some lie telling fluid.

    Turns out we believed that the caps should never be replaced once the bottles were opened

    About 20 minutes before I got back, there was a bear in camp who decided to stand up against the tent two of the clients were napping in... I didn't get any pics of that activity but I am sure I can get some copies from him in a couple weeks when I get back home.

    Brings back fond memories of trip last year.. Kinda difficult to concentrate on flying.. all I could think of was what the accident investigators would think when they found the bodies and the state of partial undress I decided that landing and completing the deed was a better option at that point

    Corroded Lift Struts
    Here are some pics of the lift struts I replaced on my "C" HH. The covering was in good shape, but I could see some rust beginning to show under the paint right above the lower strut attach. I pulled the covering off and the wood fell off in most places. There were a few areas that the epoxy had actually held on and those areas were OK, but all the areas the epoxy had not adhered real well, it looked like crap and was all rusty. I started to sand blast and was just going to recoat and put them back on, but after looking them over I said BS on that noise and made new lift struts.

    I cut the ends off my existing struts and slid them into the new 1"X.058" tubing. I made a good wide fish mouth on the tubing and welded them on. I also bought a new threaded rod end from AVID and welded that in because mine had been bent in the wreck.

    Yes, that is what the brackets were for so you have some bit of adjustment on the pedals. On the avids with the sling seat, you can take it up of let out the lacing to adjust for leg room.

    I did the same as Joey and just used weather striping from the local hardware store. Works good, but needs to be replaced about every year to keep it sealing up good and sticking on.

    Jezz,

    The most I would do is pull the exhaust and take a look at the piston that way. You can see the rings and top of the piston to see if you have any carbon build up. I at at 150+ hrs and no tear down. Most people I know dont pull them down "according to schedule".

    Get yourself a Mr. Funnel. They are awesome for filtering out water and particles, and will take fuel pretty damn fast! If you cant find one over there, PM me your addy and I will ship one to you.

    I would put some fuel in the tank and swish it around then drain. It only needs a couple gallons at a time at most to be able to rock the plane back and forth and get the crap sloshed out. I have my gas cans that are only for use in the plane. I use the Mr. funnel when I fill them at the pump so I dont have to mess with using it when I am fueling the plane.

    well I would take a shot in the dark on this one.. When Avids were first introduces, they used the 430 Cayuna.. a better boat anchor than an engine. That would probably account for a huge percentage of the failures. Kitfoxes came later after the 582 was the engine of choice. I would like to see it broken down to rotax versus other engines. I would also take a stab at it and say that probably 70% of the engine failures are caused by pilots who do not understand how to operate a 2 stroke... But that is just my biased opinion
