It is not so much the weight as all the tubes in the way trying to rout cleanly etc.  I just cant imagine that all the extra bracing is truly needed when you look at what holds up MUCH larger and heavier engines.
Might have something to do with the higher RPM and resonance that may have induced cracking??  No clue, just one of the things that roll around in my head and I spit it out and put the thoughts on paper.

When I talked to steve winder years ago about putting the belly rad on mine he said the air there was so dirty that its not going to cause much for drag.  That's also why we have to either put a shroud on the belly radiator to make a scoop or drop them down further to get them into good airflow.

Sweet!  Love to see a new one flying!  Don't be afraid to crack that throttle open when starting it.  I normally don't need to hit the primer when starting it hot.  If you do flood it open the throttle wide open and crank it till she fires off.

for comparison, cub mounts, 180 mounts (including sea plane with additional brace) and the avid mounts.  The avid mounts have 2 to 3 times as many bracing tubes for an engine 1/3rd the weight and even less TQ.

Big tires, taller landing gear and aim for the smallest clumps.  Its really that simple.  So far the IVO has held up remarkably well and seems to be less susceptible to FOD in the prop than an aluminum prop on the certified birds.
You might want to look into the leading edge tapes that are available as well.

and if its blowing 25 knots just land into next to the hangar.  The ground roll will be next to nothing.

and some of us were dumb enough to fall for it twice!
I love the way these threads go.  Never know what we will turn them into.

    engine mount engineering
I have been looking at various engine mounts and I wonder just what engineering went into the 2 stroke mounts on our planes.  If you look at the jabiru mount it has half the or less tubes in it than the 582 mount.  A supercub mount or one for the 180 is the same (simple and a lot less tubes) and they are holding up a hell of a lot more weight and TQ.  So what gives, is there really a need to have all the bracing and tubes on the 582 mount that is there?  Me thinks the mounts are way overbuilt for what they are holding up
Thoughts from the resident engineers on here?

I don't like to leave mine NOT tied down.  Some areas I have gone to are known for high winds.  Super cool thing about avids and kitfoxes.  If the winds are really bad you can fold the wings and she wont fly or flip.
Anything much more that a 25 MPH direct cross wind and you might think about having someone help walk it in by holding the strut. Your going to be using lots of brake to keep it from weather vanning too.

Needs a lot of TLC.  Jaws went down to buy it and passed, and he drove down from AK to get it.  Trailer is a rusted out POS too.

It was to help the stall and trying to make the plane idiot proof.  Later models of the KF went from 2" to .5" I think.  I know for sure in the hands of a decent pilot it does not need all that washout.

mine has aluminum leading edge sheet that is wrapped over the front spar and looks a lot like the kitfox plastic leading edge profile.  I am not at all convinced that it was really done right or has the optimum shape.  The kitfox STOL wing is actually faster than mine is and climbs better as well.  I am still kicking around what I want to do with my wing when I am ready to rebuild it, but I am pretty sure I will be going with a KF Mod IV rib and extending the wings.  I am also going to pick up some cub lift struts and make new struts for mine using the cub rear struts.

I think the biggest gain would be to take all the washout out of the wing.  2" is way too much and if you look at the wing in flight you will see that the outboard 2/3rds of the leading edge is pointed at the ground.  That has to be inducing a ton of drag and its pulling you out of the sky.  I seriously wish I would have taken most of it out and only left 1/2" of the washout in the wing when I rebuilt mine.

    Safety[edit]
One important advantage over other lithium-ion chemistries is thermal and chemical stability, which improves battery safety.[13]LiFePO
4 is an intrinsically safer cathode material than LiCoO
2 and manganese spinel, through omission of the cobalt, with its negative resistance versus increasing-heat property potentially encouraging thermal runaway. The Fe–P–O bond is stronger than the Co–O bond, so that when abused, (short-circuited, overheated, etc.) the oxygen atoms are much harder to remove. This stabilization of the redox energies also helps fast ion migration.[14]
As lithium migrates out of the cathode in a LiCoO
    2 cell, the CoO
2 undergoes non-linear expansion that affects the structural integrity of the cell. The fully lithiated and unlithiated states of LiFePO
4 are structurally similar which means that LiFePO
4 cells are more structurally stable than LiCoO
    2 cells.[citation needed]
No lithium remains in the cathode of a fully charged LiFePO
    4 cell—in a LiCoO
2 cell, approximately 50% remains in the cathode. LiFePO
4 is highly resilient during oxygen loss, which typically results in an exothermic reaction in other lithium cells.[7]
As a result, lithium iron phosphate cells are much harder to ignite in the event of mishandling (especially during charge) although any fully charged battery can only dissipate overcharge energy as heat. Therefore, failure of the battery through misuse is still possible. It is commonly accepted that LiFePO
4 battery does not decompose at high temperatures.[13] The difference between LFP and the LiPo battery cells commonly used in the aeromodelling hobby is particularly notable.[cita

My point is the chemistry is different.  To call and treat a LiFe as a lithium ion or lithium polymer is not correct.  That is my point.  You call an apple and apple and an orange and orange.

You might want to go back and actually watch the video and see what it says on the battery when he opens the case....  LiFe PO4

Thank you.  I just ran the numbers they show and they seem to be a smaller diameter than the current neoprene ones that the book calls for.  I am going to swing by the rubber supply house tomorrow and see what I can find for the mount rubber to make new bushings for mine.

Ginger seems to help most people on the boat.  When I am flying with buddies in the back seat of their cubs I can get a little twisted up.  It seems to be a control thing like riding in a car for some.  I once made a guy puke in a 172 when he was in the back seat.  When we got on the ground he shook my hand and congratulated me.  Turns out he was an ex navy jock with countless carrier landings and combat time and I was the one and only person to ever make him sick.  I wore that badge with pride for awhile

interesting.  The ones from peak might be worth getting and playing with.  The down side is you may end up melting a piston or two playing with them figuring out just how far you can go on the advance.

these are not lipo batteries.  they are using LiFe PO4  that don't tend to explode or burn like the lithium ion or lithium polymers did / do.
The ones that are shown above also have built in changers so they will balance the cells and they are meant to be used in powersports applications.  If is works in a bike or snogo it will be fine in our birds running 2 strokes.

Fred, can you post up the part number for the mounts you ordered?

I can promise you that it will not fit without modifications.  I decided that to me it was not worth the hassle.  If I remember right, there was issues with clearing the cross tube on the firewall as well but I can remember exactly.  Sorry to be a downer, but its just how it is.

I ordered one for mine.  You will have to cut the mount and modify it.  I was going to do it on mine so I could have recoil back up but the kids had a party at the house while I was gone at work and that along with a ton of other stuff was stolen.
