I like Jim's suggestion of shooting a coat of the bottom color against the tape to seal any gaps so you end up with a clear line of paint with no weeping of the color coat . . .

RobS added a post in a topic WING LIGHTS, Cheap!
With what a set of new Whelens cost, I'd be tempted to use them. It would be nice to keep everything together for the buyer, but will the kit be less marketable without them?

Doug, I may be off-base with my answer to your question, but my thought is these only make great wing position lights. When you couple the fixture with the LED light that turns into a strobe (if you power cycle it twice within 3 seconds) you now have a "colored" strobe wing position light. However, they are "forward facing" fixtures with colored lenses, so you won't get any aft position visibility from the tips. I understand the difficulty of locating an aft position light when you have a balanced rudder . . . and I don't think these fixtures are an option that will help solve that problem.

I just received a set of these from Ed and they're just what I needed for my kit! I had been looking and couldn't find a set of wing position lights that wouldn't bust the bank. These are just as advertised and a great value. Thanks Ed!

Wick's Aircraft has a closed cell vinyl nitrile insulation foam that meets the fire retardant standards. Comes in different thicknesses in four foot widths - sold by the linear foot. All sizes except 1/8" are certified with a burn test available upon request. Between $5 and $18/foot based on the thickness.

I bought a motor mount and a cowl from Mike. He has a fairly complete Mk IV and a Kitfox Lite Squared too.

So sorry! Sounds like you made the right decision and were able to walk away. Can't imagine the emotions you felt - incredible relief on a safe outcome - and aw crap, that sucks!!

RobS added a post in a topic Oratex covering
Fred,
Thanks! The reason for my question is I read this paragraph on the Better Aircraft Fabric website and it had me wondering. Note the comment about unvarnished wood soaking up glue.
"When working with a wooden airframe, all surfaces should be painted or varnished (per aircraft designer’s recommendation) and then scuffed or lightly sanded. Failure to properly paint or varnish can cause problems. Because Oratex is so durable, an unprotected airframe could easily begin to deteriorate long before the fabric even begins to show wear. Also, unvarnished wood will soak up the glue, making multiple applications necessary. Failure to properly scuff the painted surface could result in inadequate adhesion. So, always paint or varnish, and always scuff the surface."

Fred,
I've been watching some of your Oratex videos (and others) and am wondering what you used to seal the capstrips before applying the hot melt glue? The ribs on my Avid were varnished before I bought the kit, but the capstrips are bare. I plan to reseal everything before covering and want to make sure I use something that is compatible with the glue.

RobS added a post in a topic Winter Blues
Mark,
I grew up and still live south of those locations, but the company I work for has operations in and around the Bangor area, including Hermon. Beautiful state to live in . . . in the summer, but right now, not so much!
