  1. Kitfox wants that much for the Grove gear or for the wing parts - If I wasn't so deep in my project, I would come and get it - maybe if I was younger? If I had room to store it, I would get it anyway.EDMO

Thanks Ed. It's a good deal even if it had standard gear. The grove gear makes this a steal. Should make somebody a great head start. :)

    Best regards

  2. Hi all this is a Kitfox Model 4 that the original owner damaged the wings on landing.  He bought a new wing and has them built to the point of almost ready for covering.  New covering material is included.  The original owner passed away 3 years ago and the plane was giving to his best friend.  It has been sitting in his garage for the last 3 years and I purchased the project off the friend.  It needs flaperons, engine mount, cowling, and one wing tip.  These are the known items.  There is a main tubing in the fuselage where the rear spar attaches that is slightly bent.  I'm thinking this tube could be heated and bent to proper location; I've attached a picture showing this bent tube.  New 4130 chromally tubing is included to replace the tube if you so choose. The bent tube is on the pilot side of the aircraft.  Overall the plane is in good shape and will make somebody a great quick project.  One huge plus is this Kitfox 4 already has the Grove Landing gear and brakes.  A new firewall has been installed and a brand new windscreen is included.  The interior is in great shape and as many all ready know this has the more desired flaperon mixer alreay installed.  Please feel free to email me for any questions you have.  turbofanelectrics@yahoo.com

    thanks,

    Bill

  3. this guy here has the 24 foot aerobat wings performance is amazing I would not be one bit afraid of it.

Thanks TJay that video was perfect! Looks like touchdown near 50mph which is right where I was hoping.

That is the Avid that I share a hangar with. It is a Model C Aerobat with a 582, c-box 3:1 with a 3 blade Warp Drive Prop. My Avid is the regular Speedwing with a 582 b-box 2.58:1 and a 2 blade GSC prop. We usually use around 500ft of runway taking off from grass and we could probably get it stopped in about the same distance. His cruise speed is a little better than mine but I am getting closer to matching him now. Cruise speed is around 100 mph IAS with a top speed of around 115 mph. We have both cross checked against GPS in 2 directions and our readings are pretty close to being correct. Touch down speed is around 50 mph after 65-70 on short final. My stall speed is 46 mph. Oh yeah and climb in mine with just me and 12 gallons or so of gas is roughly 1200-1400 fpm depending on outside temps.

If you have some tailwheel experience then landing a speedwing should not be much of an issue. We enjoy the higher cruise speeds and slightly more comfortable rough air handling.

Hi Dan that is the information I needed! Thanks for the reply. Curious what you've done to your plane for speed improvements to you plane?

    Thanks

    Bill

  4. Hi Bill,

Looks like you're getting nowhere fast with this question, maybe I can help. One of the first Avid owners in my area that I spoke to when I was researching kit planes waaaay back when, was a model C Aerobat builder. I posted a copy of an article about her build you may want to read, as I believe it included her performance #'s (link below). Coincidentally, I think the plane was listed for sale recently in the classifieds here which may provide you with a means to contact the owner. Best regards.

Thanks Doug that was very helpful.

  5. Bill,I've got some papers on doing aerobatics in the Aerobat - Donno if it has the same wing, and donno if these papers give any stall info along with how to do the maneuvers - I've only flown Kitfox, and a lot of certified birds. I don't think you will stall at more than 50 with the short wings, and maybe closer to 40, but again, weight is a factor. IMO, the best way is to take it up and get close to a stall, and go by whatever your ASI tells you, adding in some for varying conditions.Heavy planes don't have as much variation in stall speeds with different weights as these light ones.EDMOProper use of flaps might make a big difference in your speeds, climb rate?

    Thanks Ed!

  6. Bill,I would like to hear from those who have flown both wings to get an accurate comparison.I have never flown the Speedwing, but we flatland flyers don't need the VSTOL that the sandbar and pothole flyers need. A little speed gain is good for longer trips, but maybe cuts down on GW, and is a few mph faster on landings? My buddy who owns the J3 keeps wanting to do something to slow down his stall speed - I keep telling him that he needs a drag chute to get any slower! It lands slower than the shortwing Pipers, but sure don't cruise as fast.EDMO

Ed I would be tickled to death if these speed wings land like a j3. :)

  7. We built ours with an extended HH speedwing and love it. still very dirty (no fairings anywhere lots of gaps to fill still) and it performs well for its current configuration- empty weight 526 lbs rotax 582 w B box and ivo 68" 3 blade. I've only made it out once since the new prop so don't have to many real numbers yet but I can easily be on and off the ground in 500' solo I'm seeing 1000 fpm climb and 80-85 indicated with my wife and 20 gal of fuel we still climb out at 600 fpm and cruise at 75 indicated. once I get the leading edge cuffs, fairings, and gap seals on I will see even better. only have about 45 hrs TT so far but we are happy with it. Note all of these numbers are without flaps I still haven't played with them too much. I believe leni has flown both wings and has liked both. I'm sure he will share his experience.

Seems that would be the best of both wings and is what I would do if starting from scratch. My wings are built already and covered. Would love to hear first hand experience of the flying qualities of the standard speedwing.

    Thanks

    Bill

  8. Hi all I'm finishing the construction of a newly acquired avid model c speedwing and I've noticed on this website most say to either extend the wing or go with the HH or STOL wing. Curious why this is? I'm flying out of a 3500' grass runway out of Florida so stol is not needed. Would prefur speed over stol. For those that have flown the standard speedwing what are your thoughts?

    Thanks

    Bill

  9. Hi guys I'm working on my electric elevator trim. This is a model C and came with no provisions for a trim tab. Since my elevator is already covered I'm adding a trim tab to the rear of the elevator that will be actuated by a servo. My question is since the servo is mounted in the elevator how do I route the servo wires from the elevator into the fuse? Is it alright to drill a hole through the leading edge spar of the elevator? Anybody got a pic of how you routed your wire out of the elevator?

    Thanks

    Bill

  10. Bill,I don't think it matters much - My Kitfox ones were 1/4 or 3/8 - Guess thicker might be better if it works, but don't see why the thinner wouldn't work, except it wears faster. My book says to finish the fit with a file, as the tube goes thru at an angle - not too loose, or too tight - just a light pressure on tube.EDMO

Hi Ed thanks for the info.

    Bill

  11. Thanks all for the responses. The Flaperon has not been drilled in place yet and is clamped in place. Making a scarf joint may work but not sure I feel comfortable making it strong enough. I may do more damage. Is it possible to heat the trailing edge ribs up with a heat gun and reposition then reglue in proper position. I could cut holes on the covering to get the heat gun in and then re patch the wing when finished? I would have to of course reposition the ribs and I wonder what this would do to the covering on the bottom of the wing. Think it would develop a large wrinkle? Think the top covering would stretch enough?

    Thanks

    Bill

  12. Here's a few pics hope they help.

Perfect! That helped me really visualize where they go. My kit is also missing the pieces that mount inside the turtle deck and fuse that captures the Flaperon tube. Do you know what material and diameter they are made from?

    Thanks,

    Bill

  13. This forum has been great helping me through the final build of my newly acquired avid flyer model c. I purchased the plane already built and covered with the wings rigged but flaperons yet to be installed. The manual calls for the Flaperon control horn tube to be 3/16" above the welded fuselage tab. Well I got my right side to about 1/2" above the welded tab. This is 5/16" higher then the manual states but is still fine as when the turttle deck in installed the Flaperon control horns don't hit until the very extreme position. Now the left Flaperon is a totally different story and he is where the problem is. My left Flaperon control horn tube is 1 3/16" above the welded fuselage tab, this is 1" higher then it should be and when the turttle deck is installed the Flaperon control horn hits the turttle deck. I tracked down the problem to the first 3 root trailing edge ribs; they are NOT in trail with the other ribs. Since both of my wings have fuel tanks the tanks take the place of 3 main ribs, but have you glue 3 trailing edge ribs that run from the rear spar to the trailing edge wire. The position of these ribs at the furthest aft point is to be determined by clamping a long aluminum tube to the other remaining ribs, that are full length so the trailing edge of these ribs are set by the rib design, then one by one glue in the 3 trailing edge ribs clamping them to the aluminum tube to set the proper height of the end of the rib I relation to the rest of the ribs. If my wing wasn't already covered and painted beautifully i wouldn't be so apprehensive of what I'm pretty sure is the only fix; to strip the wing of covering, re position the 3 trailing edge ribs, then recover and re paint. Anybody have some advice you could give me, would be much obliged.

    Thanks

    Bill

  14. I can take photos of mine this weekend but I am not sure if that will help. My hangar mate also has a C model and his stiffeners are located differently than mine. Mine may have been altered by the original builder to install large windows in the turtle deck.

I actually want to replace my turtle deck with a single piece tinted lexan part like I have seen others do.

Hi Dan thanks for the response. If you could post a few pics that would be great!

I have one in the backyard from my barn find. I will post pics tomorrow too when it's daylight.

That would be very much appreciated! :)

I don't know much about the different Avid models, but from what I have read, you might be a lot happier with the full Lexan or at least the solid Lexan top - I've heard lots of comments about the ones with hinges leaking.EDMO

Hi EDMO ive considered going full lexan but decided that will add extra time and money and I really want to fly. Perhaps I will do that as a mod once flying.

    Thanks for all the responses,

    Bill
