  1. Dusty added a post in a topic Powder Coating

Powder coating give a good looking finish for a cheaper cost and is generally easier to get right as it is applied electrostatically,
Electrostatic paints are a little more tricky and costly.
Painting kitfox components by conventional spray would be cost prohibitive in a commercial scale.

If recoating, sandblasting(low pressure garnet is best) would be the only way to go.
I would recommend getting it sprayed with an epoxy tinted to the final colour (industrial epoxy's are self priming and most contain corrosion inhibitors)
A very light coat of 2 pack urethane over this in visible areas will keep it looking good as epoxy will eventually dull off

If powder coating get a zinc base first as it stops the under creep corrosion like you will typically see on cheap outdoor furniture.
Over here powder coating is the cheapest option.
Powdercoating is harder to get right after a repair or modification and if it has to be removed will cost at least twice as much as any other coating to remove
I own an industrial blasting and coating business here(DUSTY!)so have a bit of experience in this area.
Always ask the question, how will this system hold up for the next 10-15 years and after that can it be economically refurbished in damaged areas.

  3. Dusty added a post in a topic tubing wall for kitfox 3 1050

If you are going to replace your rod ends consider putting in a internal threaded plug so a male threaded rod end can be used,
This would be easy to replace when corrosion sets in and allows corrosion inhibiter to be added.
This is what I intend to do when a rebuild is due

There is an kitfox (or possibly avid) on barnstormers with a photo of a brs behind the seat aiming through the turtledeck
Found it. kitfox IV 1200 trigear nice plane but one of the wheels is in the wrong place!

I have a pilot PA-200 portable connected to an icom IC-A20 in my drifter,
    It works well.

DC3 C47 powered by a PT-6 and flying for many more years, the original designers would be proud!

  7. Dusty added a post in a topic Relative position of flaperons to wing

What model have you got? It looks to be a 3
Kf3 wings fold without disconnect, due to different geometry and the swivels that you have.
The flapperons pop vertical soon after the wings begin to move but are very close.
    Flap lever neutral
Kf4 has to be disconnected,(some kf3 have been retrofitted)due to the simpler better mixer.
Unrelated to your problem but worth mentioning is a bearing that goes under the flapperon and a corisponding bearing on the turtledeck
I would strongly recommend fitting one,as a flutter may develop!
Photo two should this bearing, but the clearance looks about right! or possibly a little big

  8. Dusty added a post in a topic any windshield overlap on fuselage but ribs?

Leave the overlap as it helps weather proofing.
Be careful with your first fold,it can be rather tight.
If more clearance is required the skylight can be shimmed with tape

These allen head bolts are next to impossible to get in.

  10. Dusty added a post in a topic Avid Wide Gear w/4" of travel and 27" Desser bushwheels

I think these intensifiers would be well worth a try,is anyone using them?
My concern would be needing more travel at the pedals ,with the current geometry this could possibly create a problem getting full rudder and breaking at the same time.
Assuming a bit of loss due to a bit of give in the lines is normal?

Kf 3&4 are similar to the last photo,I would want to be sure there is no rotational strain on the other type.
    No ailerons=bad day!

Does your project have a"rotator"where it couples to the bellcrank ,this should negate the miss alignment issues?

Stainless staples sound like an excellent idea!
I havn't seen any fabric pull away yet,the glue must be awesome stuff, especially with undercamber, but there is always a first time!

  14. Dusty added a post in a topic Source for 582 Water hose??

To stop chaffing I use plastic tube(the sort that Is split lengthwise and is sort of concertina pattern) auto electrical and truck parts suppliers carry the larger 1inch?size (most cars have something similar under the bonnet )
This will do sharp bends and when secured with safety wire or zippies is very tidy.
If your hose isn't badly damaged you can possibly just protect it this way considering 582's run very low pressure

I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to reduce pitch,75 mph 6300 rpm is getting up a bit
1 degree less pitch would see approx 6500rpm for the same cruise for possibly not much gain in take off or climb
I assume your prop tracking and pitch settings are all bang on?
A little bit off makes a big difference
    Start with the simple things

May be a no go on the pillow tank.
The local manufacturer wanted to know what sort of boat I had
I told them it was a home built off road vehicle!
    (I only use roads occasionally)
Will try another source or go for a fabricated alloy slip in type

The wing locker definitely appears structural
I wouldn't want to fly 4 hrs on a regular basis but often 2 1/2 and occasionally 3,
We can often get strange and unforcast winds,an extra 1/2 hour unplanned is quite stressful!

Thanks regarding 13gal in one wing, good to hear not a major unbalance!
Regarding strut mount ,visibility in the circuit would be a problem? Even my droop tips seem to always be in the way,
The hunt for the red october! one of the all time great movies

Balancing act might work, or possibly a bungy?trim on the flapperons.
I was curious as a passenger so near the centre makes a difference, 5gallons at 1/4 span may be worse!

The header tank in my opinion is just that! I wouldn't be comfortable flying off it.as quantity can't be easily checked in flight!
It should be treated as an emergency only((basically in sight of a suitable landing field)
Any additional fuel should be transferred to the main tanks so an accurate visual check can be made.
Sounds like you have similar range issues as I do.
How do you find flying with 13 gallons in one side only?

No tigers just a description of wild country!we don't have any dangerous animals,a few wasp stings is as bad as it gets.
    Guns! a few,mostly recreational.very little crime here,seldom involving firearms!

These would work but I wouldn't be comfortable with anything hanging off my lift struts!

We have a mountain range running the length of our island.
We often fly coast to coast for a coffee run,90nm each way!
On a good day we fly the low passes at 3000ft.generally 7000ft gets us over the lower ranges,9000ft if it gets a bit choppy!
We fly over "tiger country" generally no more than an hour at a time
I will post photos when I can( I tried a while ago but gave up, password issues)
My longest flight was 7 1/4 hrs pushing 35-40 kts of headwind watching cars and trucks pass us!

    High country
Sad to hear your performance issues, keep going you will get there ,
Regarding engine water temp, we have a similar Low temp on our kf4 582 blue top.
A new thermostat made no difference ,we have soldered the vent tube on the head and drilled a smaller hole,
We believe there is enough flow to bypass the thermostat giving a slightly low water temp.
We have yet to run her up but will post when we do.
If your engine inverted it may be a completely different setup

Ak, I will take some photos this weekend and post them.
Behind the seat was considered but I only have the draggy flapperon trim so on the c of g would suit best
Most aircraft in our flying group are faster than me,I often leave 10-15minuts before the rest which gets us to our destination at the same time.
Not having similar range if I land out the others have to wait.
I agree 2-3 hrs is time for a walk around etc!
