Thanks for the update Dave. What did you end up doing with your cowling? I still haven't done anything with mine. I have been flying another plane most of the summer.

I glassed in the hole that was in the side of the cowling now and finally got it painted.

I am trying to figure out how to attach pictures to these posts. As soon as I do I will post some pictures from the transformation. A major key to making the belly radiator work is a separating plate that I made to funnel the hot air from the cowling/muffler through the gap between the radiator and bottom of fuselage. Hot cowling air also exits the bottom of the cowling at the sides.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. You will have an awesome bird when you are finished. I am in the process of buying a private airstrip in south central PA, so I won't have time or money to do any cosmetic stuff to my 180. It needs a paint job in the worst way. I restore cars and paint airplanes for a living and am finally taking the plunge into airport ownership so I can do all my  business under one roof. All my personal toy projects will be put on hold until I get my new shop up and running. I am pushing to get this Avid finished before I get too busy with real business and it ends up sitting unfinished for another 2 years. I will need it for my daily sunset stress relief flights once the work on my hangar begins. Good luck with your project , It will be worth all the effort.

Chris, I am not sure how much shipping will be, but if Ron does not get it to you pretty quick, I have a new MKIV cowling that I would shoot your way if you need it.  If has a couple dings from hangar rash, but it is in the raw so it would be easy match up for you I think.

ours is a 63 F model.  We are trying to lighten it up as much as we can.  It has the MASA stol kit which as far as I can tell is about the same as the horton.  She was a blast to fly and I cant wait to get her back in the air.  The plan now is to go ahead and strip the entire plane and repaint it while we are waiting on the final few parts to get back from being overhauled.. as in the horizontal stab.. It will have all new control surfaces, engine and prop and a shiny new paint job on her when she sees the air again.

Not sure what my issue is, but the ole 582 quit changing on me yesterday.  I replaced the starter as it decided to hang up on me.  I am hoping it got the regulator and not the coils... I wont be able to look into it further till I get back home from work in 2 weeks.

When I had issues with the FAA on my AW cert, it took them 3 months to get the inspector down to spend 5 minutes looking at my plane then handed me the pink slip.. that was only after I called the FSDO, got the gal in charge on the phone and told her I would be damned if I was going to let a perfectly good plane sit around not flying because they were too backed up to look at it and if they were not there within the week, I would just keep flying the plane with the "copy" of the original AW cert. and it would her fault that I was not an "outlaw"   The inspector showed up at the house 3 days later and was awesome to work with!  I wish he had not retired..

How about posting some strut brace tube sizes on whatever plane you have?  The later GW models and Magnum would be more informative.  I am making new 1" struts.  My Kitfox 2 struts were 3/4" diameter with a 1/2" brace tube.

    Not Jury Struts.

I borrowed a MKIV cowl bottom from a friend and it matches the Fat Avid cowl top at the prop and air inlets. It also spreads very easily to accommodate the wider fuselage. It was a bit short but I think it will be easy to add some material to the sides.  So...I ordered a MKIV Cowl bottom from Ron Smith at AllPro Fiberglass, the guy who has the molds for a bunch of Avid fiberglass parts. Hopefully he is working on it this week! Will report back on how it all works out.

It is like Christmas when you uncover your new engine and lay eyes on it for the first time after an overhaul.  My 180 is a 1953 and still has the original engine in it, O-470a with 550 smoh.  I plan to pick up a later model engine and get it ready to hang for when this old engine becomes too maintenance hungry. So far it runs like a top. My 180 has a Horton stall kit and is very light, it is a lot of fun to fly.  I am just as excited about getting this Avid in the air as a was about finding this 180.

Good luck with your engine install.

I have been very busy for sometime now but, finally got back to work on the Avid. Paint work is finished, Need to cut and install new lexan for doors and windscreen, attach the wings , flaperons, rig, and a million other little things. 90% finished 90% to go.  Sold  my Cessna 206 and bought a Cessna 180, getting my tailwheel skills back up to snuff.

The Avid undercambered rib profile is a "Modified Eppler" design, The same as the Kitfox 1 thru 3.  There is a comparison drawing  showing the Kitfox 2 "Modified Eppler" rib and the "Harry Riblett" designed rib for the Kitfox 4 and later that I posted in Files and Forms at the bottom section of this site.

In that same section, you will find the exact dimensions and a drawing of Harry Riblett's replacement rib for the Avid / Kitfox 1-3.

I bought a 7 mm wide and 5 m long USB endoscope with LED lighting at the front of the camera via eBay from some company in HongKong and I got it two weeks later via ordinary mail to Sweden. I have  also ordered some crimp tools for coax wires and D-sub pins and it has worked great. I have always received the goods and been surprised of the prices. The payment were made via PayPal.

The endoscope was very easy to use, after the CD software was installed, all I had to do was to plug it to the computer and start using it. The software stared automatically on the computer when the USB was plugged in. The intention is to use it to inspect the inside of a broken longeron for corrosion. The plan is first to clean the longeron with the type of steel brush that is used for rifles with an extra extension, push the camera inside, take pictures every 4 inches and take notes on a paper in parallel. Then I can study the pictures thoroughly afterwards and depending on the results, possibly inspect some places closer a second time.

I'm preparing to install a belly radiator. I get the 2" from the belly bottom dimension but I was wondering respective of exhaust heat, what would be the minimum setback from the muffler with a 582 setup?  The easiest place is roughly 1/2 way between the firewall and the landing gear. I was wondering though if that's far enough from exhaust heat flow.

I shipped a cowl by greyhound before, but honestly don't remember what I did! Must be getting old :-)  I would call Greyhound and ask what they need. If it has to be boxed or not. It is VERY reasonable to send by Greyhound!

Dimi3 - yes, those wings were off my Aerotrek. I bought new wings from the factory to comply with their SLSA repair manual but thinking I may repair the old ones and sell or use them on my A+ someday.
