just a larger heat sink area.  I figured if I need more heat, I would build a shroud just down stream of the Y pipe and pick up some of that heat.  They also have a paint that draws the heat out of the metal.  We tried it on snowmachines for the Irondog in 07.  We had the cans (muffler part) painted with it and the external tems went from about 450-500 to 750-800 on a wide open run.  It ended up putting too much heat in the cowling so we scrapped the idea.  I had thoughts of painting a stripe on where the heat muff goes to get some more heat out of it.

I think the biggest thing you can do is seal up the air leaks in the cabin area.  These are pretty leaky planes by nature but a little insulation and taping here and there and some good weather stripping and you can seal them up pretty dang good.  Takes alot less to heat a sealed up area.

Brock Sellards does the conversions and is the one that built "snaps" engine.  He has Plane Engine Performance.  He is getting around 90 HP out of a 583 also....  He does it pretty damn cheap too.

I don't see or hear much of the 670's.

Are there many installed on Avids, Foxes etc.?

So-- All of you heating comes off the Muffler?  Is that for convenience of installation (bigger component) or do you feel the muffler gives off more heat due to the baffling and restrictions in it?

    Thanks for the photos.

Any chance you could put me in contact with Dean Wilson?  I would LOVE to pick his brain and run by him some thoughts on the Avid.  He would be the one that could tell me if I am totaly stupid or not LOL

    My heat Muff Installation
here are some shots of the heat muff I have installed on my plane.  Works damn good..

I have the scat hose just temporarily zip tied to the back of the radiator.  The hose runs down to the heat muff.  The ends of the heat muff are sealed with the rope gasket used around fireplace doors and the paste exhaust sealant.  It is just aluminum formed around the muffler with a 1/2" gap all the way around.  The outlet air runs to a firewall mount that I got off ebay for 9.00 for a J3 cub I think it was.  The air coming out is hot enough to make my right foot HOT when it is -5 F outside.

    dang ole ranchers
An Alaska State Trooper stops at a ranch up in Palmer, Alaska and talks with the old ranch owner.

He tells the rancher, 'I need to inspect your ranch for illegal grown drugs.'

The old rancher says, 'Okay, but don't go in that field over there.'

The State Trooper verbally explodes saying, 'Mister, I have the authority
of the Federal Government with me.' Reaching into his rear pant pocket
and removing his badge. The Trooper proudly displays it to the farmer.

'See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish..on
any land. No questions asked or answered given. Have I made myself clear?
    Do you understand?'

The old rancher nods politely and goes about his chores.

Later, the old rancher hears loud screams and spies the State Trooper running
for his life and close behind is the rancher's bull.

With every step the bull is gaining ground on the officer.

    The Trooper is clearly terrified.

The old rancher immediately throws down his tools, runs to the fence and
yells at the top of his lungs.....

'Your badge! Show him your fucking badge!'

    good ole Irishman
An Irishman walks into a bar in Dublin , orders three pints of Guinness and sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn.

When he finished all three, he comes back to the bar and orders three more.
The bartender says to him, 'You know, a pint goes flat after I draw it; It would taste better if you bought one at a time.'

The Irishman replies, 'Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in America , the other in Australia , and I'm here in Dublin . When we all left home, we promised that we'd drink this way to remember the days we all drank together.'

The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there.

The Irishman becomes a regular in the bar and always drinks the same way: he orders three pints and drinks the three pints by taking drinks from each of them in turn.

One day, he comes in and orders two pints. All the other regulars' in the bar notice and fall silent.

When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, 'I don't want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your great loss.'

The Irishman looks confused for a moment, then the light dawns in his eye and he laughs.

'Oh, no,' he says, 'Everyone is fine. It's me......I've quit drinking

I plan on keeping it an airport. I'm working on getting half a hangar but even with that I'll be folding. I never thought about the baggage "bag" being in the way. Might have to look into this farther. The big thing with that turtledeck is the bearing blocks. As you well know flaperon flutter is a bad thing.

I am going to have to make one, I think I have enough lexan to do it.  Are you planning on folding the wings and trailering every flight or will you be keeping it at an airport.  If you fold the wings everytime, it limits the way you can put in your baggage, or you have to take it out every time.

I will get some better pics when I get home that show the baggage area that was put in my plane.  It is a full aluminum floor extended baggage that gives me lots of room.  In my brothers kitfox, we just picked up a small duffle bag and zip tied it up behind the seat.  Gave us quite a bit of storage.  I will try to get pics of that too.

When you do the paperwork, just put Rotax engine down, not the specific model.  Mine says all rotax engines so I can go to a 912 and not have to file a change.

I am interested in the plexiglass turtle deck, any chance you could get some pics of it?

You guys have probably seen this a million times but maybe not. This is the vid I show people when they ask why I would want to fly something like an Avid. This is an A model with a highly tuned 670 on it. Very impressive performance!

Hey thanks for the welcome! I spend quite a bit of time on forums for my various hobbies so I know the drill. I help moderate a Toyota 4x4 site that has over 10,000 members and upwards of a 1000 posts a day. I'd love to come fly my Avid up in AK. We go into Fairbanks and Anchorage quite regularly actually. Last time I was in Anchorage I chartered a Beaver on floats for the day and went on a glacier cruise it was awesome. As far as my flying I'm a 150 hour private pilot and I spent a week at a reputable school flying a champ and citabria's to get my tailwheel endorsement. I flew a 3 hour cross country with a guy in a KF IV where I flew from the right seat most of the time and a few other hops here and there but I have no PIC time in one. I'm trying to find someone to give me some dual before I jump in mine. Mine was never issued it's permanent Airworthiness Certificate for some reason to put into Phase II. Even though I have proof via the logs that it was flown 110 hours I have to re apply for an airworthiness certificate and go back into Phase I again. It's probably just as well since it has not flown in 15 years and it was originally certified with a 532 not 582. I found a fairly local DAR with over 1000 hours in a Kitfox that is going to issue my certificate and test fly it for me. The only thing I'm worried about is ground looping it during the landing roll out.  have a feeling your feet are very busy in one of these.

I'm not sure about the engine mount. I got the whole firewall forward from a guy with a B model that put a Jab on it. I got it from John Miller on the Yahoo group actually. The airplane was originally a B model kit but the original builder put a C model Hauler wings on it and re did the panel to get rid of the tank up there. It also has a custom fully plexiglass turtle deck and a few other mods here and there. I'm getting excited to get it going and back in the air where it belongs. My A&P owns his own business and shop and because times have been so tough he shut his shop down and went to work as a Jet services guy during the week for a while. As a result the covering of my wings went WAY down on his priority list so progress has been slow to say the the least. He's teaching me as he goes and lets me use his shop and tools so that's been a pretty good gig too. Anyways I'll keep posting pictures of the progress as I go on here.

Couple of questions for you guys... Know of any good pics and dimensions for doing the gas strut doors and I'm also looking for a good option for a behind the seat storage bag. There is some info on the Yahoo group on both but its just so damn hard to sort through all on that stupid email list.

welcome aboard.    Hope you brought your sense of humor with you.  I think alot of the guys on the other list dont like it here cause it is not just strictly airplane talk.  I put this up as a place to hang out and BS have fun, and talk planes when we need to.

Nice work on the rebuild!  I am taking your A&P's sign, re-printing it and putting it up on my office door!  Is that a Mk IV engine mount?  It does not look like my "C" mount.  Keep hammering away at it, these are very fun planes to fly.  Do you have any time in an Avid or KF?  If you want to come play in AK let me know, you should be able to get a MAC flight so it would be a free vacation!

I got a ride in a C5 out to Johnston Atoll in 99 or 2000.  Nice way to travel!  I used to live above Barbers point NAS and my living room window was eye level with the final approach into Hickam AFB.  I would sit on the deck doing 12 oz curls and watch the P3's going into BP NAS and every concievable plane going into Hickam.  The C5 is so damn big that it looks like it is going very slow and is ready to fall out of the sky.

    New member intro
New member here. Finally a proper Avid/Kitfox forum. Wish I would have found this a while ago. There's lots of great information on the Yahoo groups but I HATE the way it works. Forums are so much better and easier to share information with. I wish we could get all those guys over here.

I'm a C-5 Flight Engineer in the AirForce and I've got a C model Avid with a 582. NSI Subaru used this airplane as a prototype to hang their 108HP engine on it in the 90's. It had that along with a 40lb steel plate under the tailwheel when my Dad and I got ahold of it. It never flew because it weighed about 700lbs empty. We found a guy that upgraded to a Jab so I bought his FWF off him. Dean Wilson himself did my firewall forward. I was fortunate to live 30 minutes from him. The airplane has not flown since 1993 and I'm in the process of recovering the wings right now. The rest is ready to go. It's been a long project but I'm hoping to be in the air by April. Here are a few pics of it before I tore it apart and then of the restoration work.

This is why you uncover old airplanes. This was what I found when I uncovered the horizontal stab.

Many hours of prep work and making sure the metal was sound and it looked like this

Least my A&P has a sense of humor

Got new bungees straight from Airdale. They are much better than the 15 year old junk that was on there

And finally a shot of my office and my ride to work
