mine is the same way.  When the engine is running I can shut off the master and it will keep chugging untill I turn the key and ground the mags.

Changed some stuff around today to make it work how I wanted it to. Did a 30 minute ground run and some tests with the voltmeter. Aside from a small coolant leak that a tightened clamp fixed everything checked out good.

Since there are not thousands of people on here maybe it would be better to do just regions instead of states.

My key is not a Left Right Both. It's set up like a car key. It has Off (Master), IGN which turns the bus on, and start. My mags are separate switches. I wanted my electrical system totally independent of the engine ignition. I can turn off my whole electrical system and throw the key out the window and the engine doesn't know any different it just keeps on running cept you have no engine gauges but if it came down to being on fire or no gauges.... Thanks for taking a look at that far me.

I just pulled the cowling and checked... mine is just like your except I have a master instead of the key.  Battery + to solenoid, same post on solenoid to master, master to power buss and key.

No master switch?  I have everything running throught a master.  I will pull the cowling later tonight and check it out but I think I have pretty much the same setup you have, but it goes through the master.  I have an aircraft key with L/R/ both and start.

    Need input from you guys
    Hey guys,

Most ofthe snowmachine forums I hang on have specific state forums so guy from that state can go in and bs, set up riding trips, talk about local riding conditions etc.  Do any of you have an interest in state specific forums.  If so, post up what state you are in, and I will set them up.

Speaking of flying, off to go help AKFLYERBOB put new sealing in his engine then go burn some beautiful blue skys this afternoon.  I got a few hours in yesterday in a short wing death trap flying my sister and her husband who are up from CA around.  I will get some of the pics from her later today and get them posted.  I have flown the local mountains ALOT and still am in awe everytime I fly them.

On that schematic the bus is still powered through the ignition switch. You have to have a way to cut power to the bus. It's no different than the ACC position in your car. Besides my panel is super basic. I'm not going to be pulling even 10 amps of power. All that is running off my bus are the engine gauges, the strobe, and my handheld radio. I'm just going to move that wire from the BATT post on the switch to the IGN side so it's only hot when the ignition switch is on. The battery should charge through that circuit off the voltage regulator.

I don't have a plane (yet) but I do know a little about wiring and your system is kind of f'ed up.  That's putting way too much action through the ignition switch.

It may be better for you to rewire this to the schematic that was put up over at "Rotax".

Yes, it looks like it was from Williams Aviation. Wouldn't be worth your trouble now that you are covered and flyng. If I buy a flying project I will do it as the shoulder room is usually what is the limiting factor. I don't mind being cozy with my wife or a stripper from the brass pole establishment but riding with some burly dude rubbing shoulders is not fun. I keep the oil stirred up in a friend's Taylorcraft while he is flying in the middle east and every time I fly that thing it reminds me that those airplanes from that era were built before they had all these fast food drive thru windows. To me it looks like bent up sill pieces welded on then the side stringers are matched up.

Check out this wiring diagram.. voltage regulator question
I posted this on the Rotax forum but wanted your guys opinion as well. The picture is of my current wiring set up. It's a simplified schematic of course. Looking at the Rotax schematics it appears that on a 3 phase Voltage Regulator-rectifier like I have the output wire goes straight to the battery. My output wire goes through a fuse, through the bus, to the key switch, and finally back to the battery. This causes one pole on my bus to be hot all the time though even when the key is out which I'm trying to avoid.

Any reason why I cannot run the output from the Voltage Regulator through a fuse and straight to the positive post of the battery?

    My wifes awesome wiring schematic

I lied.  I just measured and  I went 3.5" for some reason.  Not sure why, but I did.

  13. akflyer added a post in a topic Question about the "widebody"

Is that the one from Merle Williams?  I really thought about doing that to mine, then got in a hurry and just went back stock width.  I really wish I would have taken an extra day or two and done the mod.  Next time I have to do covering work I will be doing the "wide body" mod.  That will give you more shoulder room, but it is the same width at your ass so it is still going to be cozy.  One thing to think of is the early models were 36" wide at the back of the seat.  The C and later were 39 1/2 or 40" wide.

I liked it too but I never did ask him where he found it, too many beers at the SPB that day.

We need more options @ 100-120 hp, more power to ya if you do it or can get it done. I read the saga of putting a turbo Geo w/SDS ignition in a Rans S-7 floatplane. He's real happy now, but it took -years- of screwing around and I sure don't have that amount of time. I've been watching out for a fresh 912 since I got the floats but no luv yet, so I started on a Jab3300 mount. I dunno, lots of gas but buddy's Legend Cub on Baumann floats was a great performer. (which, btw, is now in Alaska on wheels, pic is from '06 Seaplane Flyin at Speculator, NY). Sure wish I could make up my mind...

    Question about the "widebody"
Is the widebody modification just wider sheet metal sills welded on to allow bulged out doors? Looks like something to do if a guy is rebuilding or hasn't covered yet. I only saw a couple of pics. so not sure what is involved.

  17. 84KF added a post in a topic Why I recovered my wings

I used to work for a Twin-Beech operator and did a lot of fabric work on the control surfaces. All dacron, doped with nitrate and butyrate.

At the end of the day at the local pub, with pilots and mechanics sitting around adult beverages, I would quietly peel the dope film from my fingers and make a pile in an ashtray. Then, after telling the pilots that their aircraft was covered with this "stuff ", ...... light it up.

Actually, the only reason for butyrate dope as a topcoat is because it is just a wee bit less flammable then nitrate, which bonds better...., and finishes beautifully. Nitrate that is...

Crap, forgot to mention that one... That happens ALOT up here.. Guys will do a moose hunter stall and stuff a cub in.  They survive the crash, but burn up inthe fire afterwards.  I know of two recently that the guys buddies were in another plane, lnded and tried to get them out.. the fire was to intense so all they could do was listen to thier bud scream as they burned....  that was the one that really convinces me that stits was the way to go.  I will take any edge I can get to survive something dumb...

It's the year 2009. It's the 21'st century for Gods sake.

    Stitts.    Does not support combustion.

DEMO: Take some of that nitrate/butyrate stuff, put it in an ashtray, and touch a match to it.  :flame: :flame: :flame:

I spied a Zaggi in the back ground... you into RC to..  I am a total RC junky.  From 10 gram indoor to 40% and EVERY thing in between.  single cell lipoly to gassers.  Helis too oh, and boats shit cars and truggies too lol.  I bet if I could sell all the RC stuff I have, for what I have into it, I could buy 4 or 5 HH's with 912s in them... Kinda sick when I stop and think about it, but hey, he who dies with the most toys wins right

The fabric issue.. What was it painted with?  was that dope or aerothane?

I see alot of guys that hose the shit out of the fabric with paint and fill all the weave so it is a high gloss super slick finish.  That may be cool on a lancair or other composite plane, but on fabric it is a good way to have a shitty finish in just a few years.  The Stits manual warns against loading the paint on that way and for good reason.  You add a butt load of weight and make the paint ring worm just like yours is doing.  I know that some people only fly the planes on sunny days, keep them in a hangar and want to show them at oshkosh.  For those guys, more power to them.  ME, I know what I am going to be doing with this plane. Ease of field repairs was a MAJOR factor in choosing the stits and poly tone.  There is nothing you can screw up on the finish that a rag and acetone wont fix.  For fixing holes in the fabric from those pesky alders or sticks that get kicked up when landing on gravel barts and shit, it is a quick wipe with acetone, patch, poly brush, poly spray with a foam brush, and in about an hour or 2 you are back in the air with an airworthy repair.  Been there done that have the hat AND tee shirt.

Keep plugging away at the plane and you will be back inthe air in no time!

VERY nice.  I love that cowing!

I am still thinking VERY hard on the Arcticat 800.  120 HP at 6800.. 100'# tq... fuel injected <insert tim taylor grunt here>  The 800 gets better fuel milage than my 600 and is a VERY smooth running dual plug engine.  It is single ignition, but dual plugs per cylinder... I think it really warrants a conversion.  May have to seel what the local dealer will get me one for.

I think I went with 4" on mine.  I have the aluminum leading edge so I started end of the leading edge skin and went back.  The closer you get to the trailing edge, you have to use the curved needle and do the bottom by itself.  As soon as you get the hang of it it goes real quick.  I will measure today when I get home.
