Some more pics of my plane
I stopped in to a field about 40 minutes away last Sunday to meet a guy rebuilding a KFI and a guy flying a Sky Raider. I saw he had a camera but didn't notice he was taking a ton of pictures. Here's a link to the folder where they are located.

    This one is my favorite

This was after my "zoom" maneuver after a 100mph fly-by. First shot I've seen where you can see the scallops in the air.

What kind of Tach are you running??? Are you running a needle type tach off the grey wire in the wiring harness?? If so throw it in the trash and get a Tiny Tach http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/index.php They are cheap and will give you an accurate reading. I'd about be willing to bet money that your NOT over revving your engine your tach just says it is. Everyone here has battled this issue. I was the last victim and almost landed off airport after I way overpitched my warpdrive prop trying to make my needle tach work right. My needle tach reads over 7000rpm when I'm really turning 6400 and it fluctuates when you do a mag check just like you describe.

    Rotax question from a newbie
Hello all, I've read quite afew posts on here and thought I'd ask a question that no one has been able to really give me a good answer to. I have a rans s5 with a rotax 503 dcdi the tach looks like it is reading over revs from the engine, thus leading me to overpitch my prop, ect. The deal is if I run both mags the engine looks to over rev even with a fixed pitch Tenn. wood prop made for the 503.( they said no way it would over rev, same story with powerfin) If I run the left mag it still over revs (or it looks like it on the tach you really don't hear it over rev) Now comes the weird part if I run the right mag it looks normal at the high rpm range at idle it reads zero, literally, the tach starts to respond at about 2500-3000 rpm and then seems normal, then engine runs better with both mags though the rpm range and runs ok with either by themselves. if it's a bad connection (I've checked the tach itself) why only one mag? could the tach be bad? if so it sure is weird, I was leaning towards the left mag/CDI is creating dirty signals and screwing up the tach if so why does the other not read at idle? Any thoughts?

This is the same "POH" I had. Just remember that this is for the model A or B and that our planes are a bit heavier and wont fly quite as slow or get off quite as fast. Still great performers, but not like the really light model A.

Avid checklist?? CIGAR and GUMPS turn the fuel on and fly it.. on mine I have to check mixture and prop, other than that, make sure fuel is on, there is plenty of oil in the tank and fly the heck out of it! The only time I look at the Air Speed is when I am setting up to come in real short, then it is just feel as you dont have time to be looking at instruments. getting out short I glance to see 40 MPH indicated then pull full flaps and ease the stick back.. slowly bleed flaps till you have the climb established that you want.

Thanks for that Joey! Perfect. I will flight test, substitute the figures for my own AC and develop something a bit fuller then post it here. I know I am probably paying a bit more attention to this sort of thing than many Avid owners, but as my job is mostly telling others to be cautious and as safe as possible, I guess I have to lead by example. Also, this is the first aircraft I have ever owned as such (I have had tiny shares in a few established groups, but never started a group from scratch before - loving the experience!).

This is the only sort of flight manual I've seen. It's pretty basic and the speeds are just to give you a wag. Mine breaks ground around 40 and climb, approach, and landing all works at around 60 MPH IAS.

AKFLYERBOB put a new panel in his out of .060 aluminum.. very light! mine is the same heavy aluminum as yours with the wood veneer crap on it that weighs a ton by itself. I picked up a fiberglass one but have not installed it in my plane yet. It is ALOT lighter than my stock panel

    Building an Instrument panel
OK, I am at the point of reinstalling parts into my Avid, my instrument panel was made out of some type of rigid plastic with the outside skins covered by aluminum. I see that the original panels were made of fiberglass and I have had one person suggest 1/16 inch lexan to build a new one. What have other people used? My panel weighs much more than it has to and since my diet isn't coming along the fastest I figure my plane needs one. What works for building a light weight panel.

Thanks for the suggestions Leni. I just did a search on the CAA register list and all are available.

I will check when I get into work though - The list is never 100% current and I thought I had seen YL-FLY somewhere - Or maybe I am imagining things. Perhaps people here are reluctant to have their aircraft associated with little black critters?

    Anyways - thanks again!

Also Leni, did you manage to locate a copy of an operating handbook at all? Now I have closed the deal with the guy he has give me all the docs, all build manuals and logs, logbooks, certificates etc, but there is no manual, only operational limitations.

I think I will probably do a full test flight regime anyway, so could write my own, but it would be great if you or any other guys on here have something already that I could base it on.

    Many thanks guys!

    Hey Leni,

Glad to hear that you made it home OK. Thanks for stopping by while you were in this neck of the woods. I look forward to getting a chance to do some flying together next time.

You got me thinking about those Catalina wings for my Avid+ now though...

I've made some offers on barnstormers but that seems to piss them off, I guess they think they have them priced low enough as they are, strange bunch we are sometimes. I have a rans I'm flying so I'm not desperate just would rather build a nice 2 seater that i want to keep. I'll keep looking. I enjoy the posts on here, makes me jelous, I fly alone
    mostly, but it's still great!

Just got home from a flight to my cousins for a weekend crawfish boil... not too shabby, had 114 on the ground flying under some 747 on the approach into ANC. Gotta love floats in the winter time.. cross the inlet at 200' and go direct to home staying out of the big boys airspace... but it does make you pucker a bit when the heavies are directly over head

OK, finally back in Latvia after going to the UK to make myself broke with the 2nd part of the payment for the aircraft.

Went to the hangar to see her and she is looking sexy as hell (the Mrs has some stiff competition). The previous owner had put the wheel spats (pants) back on and now she is looking like she is doing 100 mph while still sitting on the deck with the wings folded!

The previous owner is going to deliver her to my chosen airfield in the UK (will be by road as his field is so soft it is almost impossible to even walk on it).

Also, picked up my new Garmin 196 which I got as a bargain on ebay. Loving it - Joey, you were right, this is a great unit!

Now I need the help of you guys again.

When my plane gets to Latvia I will have to put it on the Latvian register. I am trying to think of something good to register it as. Maybe you guys can come up with something from this:

The national registration is "YL" which will be followed by 3 letters (no numbers).

Originally we were going to have YL-CAT, but that has already gone.

I'm going to throw the floor open to you guys!

    Rules for building a plane
Cost per hour: Hell, if we cared we would own a boat!

Time needed for a repair: Three days beyond when you really need it.

Time to build a plane: Anticipated time multiplied by a factor of four. Square this number if you have a spouse that demands time or a flying aircraft already. If spouse is not understanding, don't even try.

Time to install finish and trim: Equal to time it took to do all the big parts.

Cost of any of the above: twice anticipated cost, or thirty percent more than you can afford

Welcome to the forum!! There are a lot of airplanes for sale right now on Barnstormers. With the economy the way it is it's probably way cheaper to buy a flying airplane right now.

Hello, not much on introductions but I'm interested in an Avid Mk 4 or a kitfox 4, I've been lurking here for awhile, trying to learn, would you care to part with one of your kitfoxes? I've been looking for a good one preferably an unfinished kit on barnstormers and there just too pricey when you don't know what you're getting.
