That sent shivers down my spine seeing an Avid balked up like that. Prayers going out for the family. Any ideas without too much speculation what happened?

Thanks - my Flyer Friend verified the 102 today. Got so many things to do to finish fuselage, but did a little research and believe the cheapest, easiest way to extend LE would be with Aluminum. All of this is just thinking for the future.
So sorry to hear an Avid crashed and we lost a Flyer.

Update on this thread after a long time - I used 1 1/4"DS diameter aluminum tube for leading edge, mounted on 4" plywood rib extensions and covered them with 1mm Finnish plywood about 12" wide - also converted undercambered ribs to a modified Riblett profile.  Adding separate 1`5" chord flaps and ailerons with separate controls.   See other Kitfox IV posts and FOXY FLAPPER FOTOS.   EDMO

Thanks for the input guys. I think i will just go with my 532 for now until i can afford what i really want. If I'm not mistaken the exhaust and radiator should be the same for both the 532 and 582 so that will save me a bit when the time comes to.

-Herman- do you remember what ignition it was you put into your 532? this i may be interested in doing.

What specs do you need to plug numbers into your exhaust calculator? I need to come up with a good exhaust system for my 800 conversion I am workng on. Trying to cut twist and fit the stock pipe into the cowling is gonna be a beyatch do to the way the exhaust crosses over the top of the engine. Ahh the joys of experimentals! I figure I am going to loose a little power becasue I have to monkey with the exhaust, but I am starting at 140 HP so I think I can afford to loose a little bit, as long ans she still runs smooth!

I got the MATCO 8" wide for mine but have not had a chance to use it yet. It is WAY wider than the 6" MATCO I was running and it looks like it should do the trick. I went with the single fork 8".

102 inch is legal in Missouri I have hauled plenty of semi-trailers throughout your state and never needed a permit until I was over that, and if it is only an occaissional deal the permits are cheap. 102 is legalin all states, I know california will only allow 40 foot trailers except on designated routes, but very rarely enforced.

Time to update this thread. I started on my plane at 630am on Saturday. I had the engine on the bench by noon. My stator and pulled arrived at 3pm and I went back to the hangar and replaced the stator and cleaned and inspected everything so it was ready to go back in Sunday morn. Started at 7am on Sunday morn and had it fired up and leak checked by noon. It's now running at 14 volts again. Thank goodness!! Pulling the motor alone is fun! Not really.

Pretty good weekend job considering the motor now has new exhaust gaskets, pulse line, fresh plugs, and new gearbox oil and coolant all in a weekend. It was nice to put eyes on everything too. I will post pics of the old stator tomorrow.

    tail wheels
I am looking for a bigger diameter and width tailwheel than the hard rubber Maule tailwheel that came on my Kitfox.
I fly off of soft sand often and my current tailwheel leaves a trench dug in the sand.
Matco offers several choices of tailwheels from $250 to $650 and 3 and 1/2 inches wide to 5 inches wide.
Any experience or suggestions regarding these tailwheels for soft sand?
    Thanks Herman

My 1987 model 1 kitfox also came with a new 532.
I had the points ignition switched out for snowmobile ignition and flew it for 14 years and 450 hours.
The 532 with snowmobile ignition idles at a lower RPM and smoother than my 582 due to the ignition retard feature of the snowmobile ignition.
Merle Williams in arizona has experience with the 583.
The 532 never let me down and I would use yours since you have it.

Well I talked to the DAR today. Very helpful, he has done this before. Besides paperwork, he will require a condition inspection by an A&P or IA, not an LSA Repairman, and only 5 hr. Phase I flight tests.

I'm putting an HKS with a 3.47 gearbox and a 71" Kiev prop in my Kitfox. There are a (very) few planes flying with that combination and reporting OK performance (SkyRanger, Avid, Super Koala). Frankly, I got the engine very cheap otherwise I wouldn't do it.

I'm going with short rear intakes (8" length *including* the carbs) and 30" exhaust pipes based on the experience of a trike flyer in S. Africa and some testing done by a few on the HKS forum. FWIW, those numbers also agree with what came out of calculator for motorcycle intake/exhaust design when I fed in all the numbers from the HKS.

That guy in S. Africa cast me a rough pair of intakes like the ones he had for $50. (I said thank you kindly). Took me a little while to machine them to fit. Won't be night and day difference but when starting with 60hp I'll take every bit available. Probably will lose some lower speed torque (nothing is free) but will trade it for improved climb performance.

So my KF won't be a great climber or go fast (darned I feel bad now) but will be good for cruising around. I found that the 582 did *not* like avgas and car gas isn't available if I'm tooling around very far from home. Plus that engine always needed some tinkering (hate Rotax part prices -> crazy).

Great Looking Factory Ribs. Yes, I remember your post about no SLSA parts sold to non-owners. Will you still be eligeble if you convert to E-LSA?
I will probably build a mold - only need one mold - planning not to do whole wingspan - will be minus a foot on root and tip, and beveled back to original from there. Going to check with DOT for maximum load width on our roads - If I can get by with eight feet, six inches, then I will extend three inches on each wing, just barely keeping legal for trailering.
I am thinking obout 1/16 x 1 aluminum rib extensions for support for the LE, but that might be overkill. (Maybe 1/32?) I have a tendency to overbuild - sometimes get into trouble weightwise.

    Hi Herman,
The switch is wired a bit differently in order to allow one polyswitch to work at each end of the travel of the prop. If you follow the current flow through the switch and polyfuses in the different switch positions, you will see that it makes sense, but wouldn't work if wired exactly as IVO did it.
My Magnum has a lycoming. I would LOVE to have an IVO IFA prop on it....if I trusted it for the application. I have heard that the IVO is not well suited to direct drive applications due to the shock impulses from the cylinders firing causing problems. Fine for gear and belt drive, but I don't EVER want to be a pilot during a prop failure! If I were to hear of more people using the IVO for direct drive applications, I would consider it.
I had the IVO IFA on my previous Avid, a 582 powered MKIV HH. It was awesome on there.
My friend just broke a jackscrew by trying to turn it. You can't turn it by hand. There are layers of planetary gears in there that don't allow the shaft to be turned by hand. Only by the motor.

I have a poor outlook on things such as this.. if they give you a hard time and wont issue a certificate, the only way they could keep me from flying it is to lock me up. I had to tell them that when they were giving me grief over issuing a new certificate for mine because the original burned up in a house fire. As soon as I told them I was going to fly with or without that lil piece of paper, they were VERY prompt in getting it to me.

It should have nothing to do with the home page. I am thinking perhaps it could have something to do with screen resolution settings, and how big the pictures show up on your screen. Some guys post some MONSTER pictures so you havet o scroll up n down left and right to see the whole picture, and the actual forum page will dissapear all together. I may go in a limit the picture size , but the forum software will automaticaly change the pic size, nothing you will have to do on your end.

Ed- I didn't take any pics of the cuff specifically but here's a couple more that might help give you a better idea. It definitely extends the LE further forward of the front spar than the PVC extrusion. Unfortunately, the SLSA dealer does not sell parts to a non-owner for liability reasons (I tried a couple years ago to buy a cowl from them). Wonder how he'll like me now?? At any rate, I posted the pics as an example of something that might be doable as a D.I.Y. Heck, if you make a mold you could go into biz selling 'em!

[edit] and yes, same size and distance between spars. I can actually bolt my Avid wings to the Aeropro.

Larry, have a little faith will ya! I understand your concern with the gov't bureaucracy but just because an aircraft has been deregistered, doesn't mean it can't ever be registered again. Heck, that happens all the time. And remember, this is about an experimental, not standard certified, aircraft. Standard airworthiness certificates are airworthiness certificates issued for aircraft type certificated in the normal, utility, acrobatic, commuter, or transport category, and for manned free balloons, and for aircraft designated by the FAA as special classes of aircraft. Special airworthiness certificates are primary, restricted, limited, light-sport, and provisional airworthiness certificates, special flight permits, and experimental certificates. At issue is whether you can change a special airworthiness certificate classification after an aircraft has already been issued one (whether or not that original special airworthiness certificate has expired or been surrendered) and I believe you can... subject to certain restrictions, of course (ie., one no-no is you can not change from E-AB to ESLA).

    As I understand...

Aircraft previously issued an LSA category airworthiness certificate under FAR §21.190 (Special Airworthiness Certificate, or SLSA) are eligible for an experimental LSA airworthiness certificate. In fact, FAR §21.191(i)(3) specifically allow and address aircraft that "Has been previously issued a special airworthiness certificate in the light-sport category under §21.190.". The applicant must provide documented evidence that the aircraft has been manufactured and constructed to the applicable consensus standard (Aeropro CV has received this approval of course, it is a requirement for a SLSA manufacturer/importer) except when the aircraft is eligible in accordance with FAR §21.191(i)(1) (not applicable to me - this was the one-time conversion to ESLA 'window' offered to 'Fat Ultralights' and has expired).

Without a current airworthiness certificate, one needs to go through the entire process of getting a new registration, ie. inspections, new N-number, Phase I and II etc., just like is necessary when first registering and seeking an airworthiness certificate for your newly built Experimental-Amateur built LSA. Moving an existing SLSA to ELSA also requires changes to the aircraft’s placards, the size of the N number, an aircraft inspection, and the issuance of a new airworthiness certificate and operating limitations.

Upon satisfactory completion of the records inspection, documentation review, and aircraft inspection by the appropriate DAR, the FAA will complete experimental LSA certification by issuing an airworthiness certificate for the purpose of operating an experimental LSA with appropriate operating limitations to be attached to Form 8130-7. Under FAR 91.319(e), the FAA may prescribe any additional limitations in phase I or phase II deemed necessary in the interest of safety. When the experimental LSA certification is to be issued for an unlimited duration, the operating limitations may be prescribed in two phases in the same document as follows:

    - For the phase I limitations, the FAA will prescribe all operating limitations appropriate for the applicant to demonstrate compliance with FAR 91.319(b) in the assigned flight test area. This includes a limitation requiring the owner/operator to endorse the aircraft logbook with a statement certifying that the prescribed flight hours have been completed, and the aircraft has been shown to comply with FAR 91.319(b) and the requirements of the applicable consensus standard. The owner/operator may then operate in accordance with phase II.

    - For the phase II limitations, the FAA may prescribe operating limitations for experimental LSA for an unlimited duration, as appropriate (ie., Day VFR only) .

If the aircraft meets the requirements of the experimental LSA certification, upon completion of Phase I, the FAA will issue the special airworthiness certificate (Form 8130-7) with operating limitations.

So I do think I can get this thing registered as an ELSA, however, my question again...

I have complete aircraft, engine and prop logs as well as the Pilot Operating Handbook w/ Flight Training Supplement and Maintenance Manual to satisfy the records requirement. I have the original Operating Limitations of the SLSA manufacturer that were attached to the original airworthiness certificate. Unlike the Operating Limitations typically attached to a E-AB airworthiness certificate, there is NO mention of Phase I testing or restrictions. All the requirements to satisfy Phase I flight testing have obviously already been accomplished and satisfactorily recorded by the SLSA manufacturer. This is why, assuming all repairs return the aircraft to it's original state without significant modification, I am wondering if the DAR might be willing to forego the standard 40 hr Phase I testing in favor of a 5 hr Phase I, or something more akin to the testing requirement when making a 'major change'.

Was just asking if anyone had any experience in this or heard of such a thing. In any event, we'll see what my DAR has to say about this soon enough...
