    Contributing Membership??
    Hey guys,

Wellas you know the site was down yesterday do to a move to the new server. The site went from pennys a day to host to dollars a day. What do you guys think about having the option to become a "contributing member" Not much, 10 or 15 bucks a year, just to help me offset the new costs of the site. I am tossing around the idea of having some shirts and hats made up too, any one interested??

I wont deal with putting up those damn pop up ads that piss me off or accepting manufactures ads.

This site is for the builders and flyers and for open and honest discussions and product evaluations, not some toned down politically correct product review. If a product sucks, we can say it sucks and you will never be moderated here for an open and honest opinion.

Let me know what ya think or if I need to go out and find a second job

  7. EDMO added a post in a topic INSTALLING HOERNER WING TIPS (HOW?)

Thanks Doug - mostly wanted to know how you did the trailing edges and if you put any reinforcements inside of tips.
I considered moving them forward, but then would have to make fiberglass extension on back, and I've had my hands in too much of that stuff and try to avoid it. I would also have to cut the front end out to mount the LEDs on the inside, and still bend Lexan for covers. Leaving the tips back and adding lights and lexan on front seems to be the easiest in this case.
Your Magnum book must be different than mine - I know what you mean by the shortened trailing edge, I saw that.
My book shows a triangle-shaped trailing edge sticking out a long ways from the rear of the wing, which is aerodynamically supposed to reduce drag by releasing the vortex farther away from the wing. Other books say that an up angle on these extensions helps too, although I imagine that they would have to be a well-matched pair to prevent one wing from seeming heavy, since they have a lot of leverage out on the tip of the wing .
Cant imagine these long tips when wing-folding unless one goes higher than the other when folded - otherwise looks like they would hit each other.

After looking at this thing for a couple days I decided to leave the bypass hose at the back of the motor. that's the way it came out of the box. and to move it would have been a plumbers nightmare to get the radiators plumbed, so I cut a notch in the firewall, bent up a piece of sheet metal and pop riveted it in. It actually makes the firewall a little stronger. and now for the exhaust and muffler. The bosses on the blue head are a little different than a gray head so the mounting bracket will have to be changed a little bit , but I'm sure I can work that out. I am in need of some new (not exactly sure what you call it) the rubber belting material that lets the muffler move. If anyone knows where to get some, I'd appreciate any information. I was going to take a picture of the firewall cut into it but I had to put the motor in and take it out several times just for measurements. When it went in the last time and everything fit, I didn't want to take it out just to take a picture.

    thanks

Ed- no it's not a Hoerner style wingtip, it is the 'standard' removable wingtip sold by Kitfox. Both are the same length but the width varies, as does the shape of course. I thought you were simply looking for ideas how to attach removable tips. To my thinking, it doesn't really matter what shape or style you have because they all pretty much attach the same along the capstrip using backer strips. How you pick up the trailing edge is dependent on what type of trailing edge material you use and what shape you want, right? If you use the standard trailing edge material from ACS, be sure to shoot some of the low expansion insulating foam into the groove to help stiffen it up.

I like the idea of using rivnuts to secure the backer strip to the capstrip. With a bit of Hysol it should be real secure and a lot quicker than installing nutplates for sure. If the tips you have are too short to reach back to the trailing edge with a 90* degree junction, instead of building up the front as you described, consider holding them forward and angling a short piece of trailing edge to meet it. Best way to explain is to look close at the Magnum wingtips, they are not Hoerner style but rather 'Finch' style tips with the short trailing edge angle piece.

Personally, I like the look and really appreciate that they omit the sharp corner that everyone invariable knocks their head into. I considered making up a custom set of Finch tips to use on my Avid+, using the oem Avid tip as a start. FWIW, the same fixed Avid fiberglass wingtip is used on all B-D (Mk-IV) models regardless of HH or Speed rib. It open on the bottom to accommodate either rib profile and covered with fabric. Very hard to turn that into a full tip that could be attached along the full length of the top/bottom capstrips without a ton of work. Much easier to just start with another tip like the KF tips, which is what I ultimately did. The KF 4-7 tips (standard or Hoerner) will work great with the Avid Speed rib profile, not so much with the Avid HH profile (use KF 1-3 standard or droop tips for those).

  12. EDMO added a post in a topic INSTALLING HOERNER WING TIPS (HOW?)

Thanks anyway Doug. That wingtip looks like it is not Hoerner - It looks about 6 inches long in the photos - mine are about 10 inches at front and 15 inches at the trailing edge - will probably reinforce trailing edge with aluminum strip and glue.
I'm using Rivnuts instead of anchor nuts on the attach strip, which will be riveted to the wing after fabric covering. The tips have been cut and are only long enough for the original wing chord, so planning to mount the LED wig-wag lights on front of them and cover with Lexan to match extended leading edge.
I have manuals for KF 1, 4 & 5, none showing Hoerner tip mounting. Dont think my Avid Magnum or Aerobat shows them either.
    Maybe Raven?
will post photos in the far future.

Jim I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help yesterday when you called. I'm in Spain now and have a few minutes with my laptop so I uploaded these pics for you. Our cowlings are not that different from one another. This is how your bypass hose should look. Not sure how the rest of your plumbing will work out with cheek radiators but I imagine it'll be easier than notching your firewall.

    INSTALLING HOERNER WING TIPS (HOW?)
I know that Doug had some photos somewhere of installing these wingtips.
Did you add any reinforcements to the tips? How did you do the trailing edge?
I'm planning on removable with screws & not the hinges.

Sounds like you got your hose on backwards. Route it around the front cylinder. Pic is my plugs up KF3, but you get the idea.

    POH

Try that link. It leads to a document on the yahoo group site. I'm not sure if it'll work if you're not signed in.

On the subject of the 503, I wonder how much lighter it is than the 582. I have seen some figures but I'm not sure if they represented total FWF weight. It seems that there were a number of A models converted to the 532, but the 503 is closer to the Cuyuna in weight. About 10 more horsepower and still air-cooled.

A co-worker used to fly ultralights and put about 1000 hours on his 503. He had nothing but positive comments about it.

Installing 582 bluehead in Mark IV
I was wondering if anyone on this forum has installed a 582 bluehead in a Mark IV? I tried putting my new 582 in my plane this morning and found there is not enough room for the bypass hose between the motor and firewall. so what do you do? cut a notch in the firewall to make room for the bypass hose? or route the bypass hose around the front of the motor and go into the front of the water pump? then you would need 180 turn in the hose to get back to the radiators.

If anyone has done this, I'd appreciate some help. pictures would be nice too.

    thanks

The A model came out with the 430 cayuna so the numbers wont be the same. with the 503 your take off speed should be around 40 -45 (for the first take off till you get some sky under you) Cruise around 70 + fuel burn 4.5 -5 GPH. The weight of the plane will affect it greatly. If it was bone stock and built light and it is around 420# or under you should have AWESOME STOL with it.

Maybe we can get Bob to measure his cable. I would bet you could get CPS to make one up for you, they custom make cables to about any length you need! Will see if I can get ahold of him tomorrow too and see if his manual shows anything on a water rudder. I didnt think it had one, just used the bottom of the rudder in the water for low speed steering but I could be wrong!

Glad to see the posts that things are coming along on it! Post up some progress pictures!
