Going to try to attach a photo of Avid Tips with one nav light mount riveted and glued and the other just glued on, with the white Kitfox mounts which look like they would work on an Avid wingtip. Sorry, I havent learned to resize - matter of fact, I havent learned much about putting photos on puter or much of nutten else - Just glad I can turn puter on & off !

  5. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Mk IV wing-fold time

Paul - the folding and unfolding is not a super bad process on an Avid Mk IV. 10 minutes max on each end. But, as Bryce said, the transport is the issue. Seven miles is a long way to go on the gear with the tow-bar. It would definitely require a trailer. Now loading and off loading from a trailer plus folding is more hassle and time, meaning you will find excuses to not fly. (Just being honest.)

My advise is get a hangar at the airport. You will enjoy the plane and it fly more.

I tow mine to the airfield .5 mi from my barn, and that's the most dangerous part of the flight! And i'm out of the city limits! I wouldn't tow mine 7 miles because of other drivers/vehicles. Something is going to get damaged from someone else, not you towing it. I would look into splitting a hangar/sharing some space as these birds fold up quite easily and can be stowed in some small areas. Good Luck, Bryce

I must have a real high metabolism - hot all the time - just cant take the heat here, although I was born here - one reason I loved Alaska so much. But my wife freezes at 70F....22C?
All summer I have this recurring dream of getting into the bird and watching the frost form on inside of windsheild...
Love winter flying. No bugs in plane or in air either.

I'm not finished with my avid yet but my sky raider i could have it unloaded wings folded out and ready for pre-flight in less than 10 min. I plan to trailer my avid as well. Here is a link to a kitfox folding up it should be pretty close

Ed that would be great if you can see if they fit the avid tips and even take a couple pics if you can.

    Thanks Robert

    Mk IV wing-fold time
Please excuse the newbie questions. Hard to find info on this bird.

I am trying to decide whether to rent a hangar or keep the bird in my barn and tow it to the airport (7 miles away). The big question, of course, is how long does it take, realistically, to fold & unfold the wings. (Assume no help.)

    TIA.

Mk IV with wing extensions - specs\p0
Does anyone have the specs (esp. cruise speed) for an Avid Mk IV with the 3' wing extensions (that means 35' span).

    Engine is a 582.

And one other thing - how's the standard (not 'wide') gear on that plane for a taildragger newbie?

    Thanks!

p.s. If you cant get the fiberglass mounts from Avid, I have a set I bought from Kitfox, think about $12? Want to keep them, but can go try them on the Avid tips I have for sale which already have the mounts on them.

  15. EDMO added a post in a topic wing build questions

Priming AND painting the inside of the trailing edges would be a good idea - water can collect there. I have been told that primer will not block moisture as well as the finish paint. I use the Rustoleum self-etching primer and enamel in a spray can is good enough. I've had bad results with their spray epoxy - turned out to be like powder.
Buy a pack of 100 seaplane grommets from Spruce, and put one everywhere moisture could collect. At the trailing edges, one near the outer rear of each rib would be a prime place to put them. After you are finished with your finish, take a real red-hot ice pick or small rod and go into each hole in the grommets and open up the fabric - dont drill it or you will leave frizzies which will trap moisture.

DUH - Now where did I put those heat guns?

Think it might be easier and cheaper to just replace the lower half with Lexan. You could add an angle inside and a strip outside of the edges where they meet if necessary. Later on, if you replace, you could do half, or go one piece.

  19. EDMO added a post in a topic Full Lexan Doors

One of my books says to use 8-32 machine screws with rubber under steel washers or nylon washers. Make holes at least 1/16th oversize and back off screws one turn after tightening to just touch washer.
Books show an aluminum angle riveted to crosstubes and both pieces bolted to it, with a flat or slightly bent aluminum strip on top. The rear is about the same, except you do not bolt your turtledeck.
Whatever you can dream up will probably work.

Second the motion on Decal, or bumper snicker.
On third thought - Just a Decal - hard to find a place for a bumper snicker on the birds !

  23. EDMO added a post in a topic TINTED WINDSHEILD QUESTIONS

Cant locate color code sheet for Lexan - Cadillac # is 9600, I think. Clear, Solar gray, Light Bronze - .080 to .500 thick.
NOW, I have stumbled on something in Lexan called "MAKROLON" which is referred to as "complies with FAR.......?
Got to check on this when I get time.
    ED in MO

Correction: 9034 is the one listed as having the tints. There are several varieties of GE Polycarbonate - One is listed as "bendable"?
Another is more of this , another is more of that? Enough to make you wish you hadnt started looking !
Makrolon is the same types of Polycarb as produced by BAYER. The FAR has to do with flamability, wouldnt worry about any of these.
Need more info - try looking it up....I'm done.
