Was it a standard speed wing MK IV that they put extensions on or was it a full length wing that was extended? I have flow an extended speed wing and it was a pleasure to fly! very light and sporty on the controls, yet I could get it in and out of every place I bring my "C" Heavy Hauler. If they were full length wings that were extended, I would LOVE to know what they did. Were the struts extended also? I would love to put extensions on mine, but I am afraid the washout in the wings would kill any performance increase I would have seen for STOL.

I will have to check my design books, but believe the standard ratio for wingspan / landing gear is 4:1, so your landing gear with 35 foot wings would have to be about 9 feet wide.

It sucks when you find yourself in a financial pickle severe enough to peel off your big boy toys, been there. From the other side of the fence though, it offers an opportunity to upgrade or even initially join the sport at temporarily (hopefully) depressed prices. That's a good thing when pilot numbers are dropping like a rock. My Avid+ project has stalled due to me finding some too-good-to-pass-up bargains that needed very little time and $ to become airworthy. Poor baby's been pushed aside 3 times in 2 years now!

[edit] I see that that Mk-IV on BS also has a nose gear weldment. If he still has the original oem bungee gear, that looks like a real good price for a nice, low hour convertible.

Has it been listed someplace else Bryce? That is the first time I've seen that one. I check barnstormers just about every morning to see what's new in the Experimental category. That one has all the desireable mods done if your wanting to take one into the brush. It has just about everything done that I've done to mine. The panel layout is terrible and you could lose 15lbs by ditching that interior but other than that it looks pretty good. You are right though for that price somebody would have snatched it up if it was really nice. Wonder if it has some damage history he waits till you call to disclose or something. Sure stinks if your built are having to get out right now. Guys are selling their flying birds for less than half what it cost them to build them all across the market right now. The certified market is even worse. If I could afford to feed one I'd be looking at buying at C182 right now to haul my family around in. The older VFR straight tailed ones are going for dirt cheap.

    Hey Joey and All,
That looks like a heck of a good deal! However, that particular bird has been for sale at close to that price for a good while, which begs the question.... why hasn't it been bought by now?? Bryce

I think your estimate of 190 for a Subby is very optimistic. I have never seen one - with redrive - that was less than 220# installed weight.

You will also find that the Corvair and VW direct drives are much higher rpm range engines requiring a shorter prop. These short props do not work well at slow airspeeds (like an Avid flies at) compared to a larger slow turning prop. I have seen so many of these planes that the builders chose to go what appeared to be the inexpensive route (VW, Corvair) only to find that the engines were unreliable, maintenance intensive, cooling/mount/cowl issues and the planes never or rarely flew. The proof in the pudding for this is how many Avids/Kitfoxes do you see sporting VW or Corvair motors? Very few, and fewer yet with any appreciable amount of time on them.

Subaru conversions are somewhat the exception to this - due to the use of a redrive and more frequent installs. Their trade off is weight, making the plane basically a single seat aircraft...

Similiar equipped ones usually go for the 18-20K range or higher. This would be a great MKIV if somebody is looking.

I believe the EA81 with redrive will come in at about 190 - Other Soobs will weigh A LOT MORE -
I can look up Continental weights, but C-65 to C-90 should be about 160, and the 0-200 about 8 pounds heavier, without oil. We have swapped C-65s in two planes, a Luscombe and a J3, for an O-200 and a C-90, and the change in performance was unbelievable, with little change in weight.....Sure wish you could weigh the Corvair. Maybe I can find published weights for it, but they all lie a lot in mags.

I am well aware of the 5th bearing. I installed one on a friends Corvair powered KR2S.

Anyone know the installed (flying) weight of a standard Sube install? I've read anywhere from 190-240#.

This Corvair install would have 5th bearing and no redrive. From the get go, I've maintained no 2 cycles, no redrives, at least 4 cylinders preferred in this project. There are numerous other engines that would be very nice (U/L Power, Jabiru to name a few) but their cost likely will not fit this project.

In the beginning of this project, I talked in some length to Brett at Airdale and was then thinking on a Continental up front. Brett thought that was a great idea. He recommended at least 80hp to accuunt for extra weight. . (I had thought 65hp to match the 532/582.) If such Continental would come about at good price, we might lean that way, otherwise, this Corvair runs a smooth as anything you could imagine. I believe the flying weight of the Corvair to be nearly the same as a Cont and only a couple pounds one way or the other.

Do you have a special trailer to tow you a/c? I've got Avid Mk IV with a trailer made for it. The wingfold is not the biggest job, it's the load/unload and securing the a/c to the trailer. And as Av8r3400 stated, the trailer will be quite large object to tow. Altought I towed the a/c around 1000 km when I initially bought it, I'm not convinced that travelling on top of trailer is good for the plane in long run, e.g. tail weel spring has quite hard job... I second that getting some hangar space at the airport.... That's what I do with my bird.

The local aircraft recovery company here is located in the same hanger as my flight club in Boise so I took the liberty of going to see the remains of this aircraft, the wreckage was much worse than it looked in the video its nothing short of a miracle that they all survived. It seems we have had several accidents here in Idaho this summer much more than usual and I think all of them can be directly related to density altitude and were completely avoidable had the pilot just taken the time to figure it and make that all important go-NO-GO decision. Not meaning to point fingers but this is a very good point that we all need to keep in mind before we depart.

It's not only a problem of density altitude

after 800 m, the aircraft just take off but it was a pain in the ass and the pilot doesn't wonder why !

800 m after, at the end of the track (you can see it on the right, with a lot of water on it) it can't take altitude, and the pilot still don't wonder why

3 km later, still no altitude and still no question in the pilot's mind

I don't know what is a "commercial pilot" but I guess it is a professional pilot

With all the grass between the track and the forest the best solution was to land in a field

    not in the forest !!!

    a lot of chance

    Todays lesson on Density Altitude
Do you know the definition of Density Altitude and how to compute it?? As an Instructor Flight Engineer with over 5000 hrs of 4 engine jet time for my real job performance data is my bread and butter.

Density altitude is defined as the pressure altitude (not field elevation) corrected for non-standard temperature variations. And while this is a correct definition, my definition is perhaps more appropriate: DENSITY ALTITUDE IS THE ALTITUDE THE AIRPLANE THINKS IT IS AT, AND PERFORMS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS COMPUTED VALUE.

Basically anything over 59F or 15C and your Density Altitude is going to higher than your field elevation. Take off at 95F and your could effectively double your field elevation.

Here is a prime example of an airplane trying to fly in an elevation it just simply can't.

    http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=835_1344412426

This video has gone viral and was even on ABC's morning news this morning. Most of you have probably seen it if you are on other online forums. If not here's the run down.

Stinson 108-3 loaded with 4 adults taking off during mid day based on the sun position in June during record heat in Idaho. The field elevation is 6370ft. He never leaned the engine and flaps were up. You might say why and hell didn't he turn out of it? My guess is that airplane was doomed from the minute it leaves and settles back into the ground. I bet it was so close to stall that he dared not to even try and turn it. I've bent an airplane so I don't want to sit here and Quarterback on it too much. The one thing I WILL give him credit for is flying it all the way in. Had he panicked and stalled it I fear the outcome would have been far different.

If you know of any pilots who can't give you the definition of Density Altitude please show them this video!!

Warning...there is blood shown but not too gory. Get ready to rethink that last takeoff you made where you had any shadow of a doubt that you were gonna climb out of it.

If you are interested in step by step instructions and the actual chart to compute your Denisity Altitude let me know and I'll post it.
